  • Patent number: 6031881
Abstract: This invention involves a method for mitigating multipath effects in radio ranging systems which is based on searching for and finding a maximum likelihood estimate of range for a received signal in a signal ranging system. In determining the maximum likelihood estimate, the correlation process uses a high resolution step method in processing the received signal sample values to develop an estimation statistic. The estimation statistic using the correlations of the received signal is based on a new derived representative set of coefficients formed from a nonlinear combination of parameters of the received signal transformed into an invertible linear combination which allows solution of the maximization process of the estimation statistic. Additionally there is a method of constraining the relative amplitude of received secondary signals to obtain a refinement of the optimal solution of range.

  • Patent number: 6018390
Abstract: A sensor, an optical accelerometer, which is sensitive enough for the measurement of nano-g's as well as thousands of g's. The sensor is created by an optical waveguide coil which is secured to a substrate. At one end of the waveguide coil, a mirror reflects the emitting light back into the waveguide coil. Positioned along one side of the substrate, a proof mass is adapted to exert force against and deform the optical waveguide coil during acceleration of the sensor. An identical optical waveguide coil is secured to the opposing side of the substrate with its associated proof mass positioned on the side of the substrate opposite the other side's proof mass. A beamsplitter communicates light into the ends of the two waveguide coils and then a monitor uses the light being emitted from the ends of the coils to measure the g's being applied.

  • Patent number: 6006849
Abstract: A single track vehicle having a foot pedal lever activated side wheel extension/retraction mechanism is fitted with a hydraulic system for responding to excessive feedback force imparted to the driver's leg via the foot pedal. The system includes a normally open needle valve installed mechanically in line with a linear actuator to sense the magnitude of the feedback force to the driver's feet. If the feedback force exceeds the amount the driver can counter comfortably, the needle valve is closed as a result of the opposing force vectors between the loaded side wheel and the driver's feet. The system further includes an inertially activated hydraulic valve installed on the vehicle frame. In the event of a head-on crash, the valve closes, freezing a gas strut and thereby holding the foot pedal lever in the aft position, preventing injury to the driver.

  • Patent number: 6008900
Abstract: A calibration technique for lasers of a data acquisition module in a signal processing system, wherein an optimal value of a phase modulation coefficient is calculated for each laser and used as the amplitude of a cosine wave signal for the laser module carrier frequency for phase modulation of the laser output signal. The phase modulation coefficient is determined from a global average I/Q ratio, calculated for all channels of the selected laser module, as an average of all I/Q ratios of in-phase and quadrature phase angle components of the signals returned from the sensors. The phase modulation coefficient for the selected laser module is determined empirically or by dividing the previously determined phase modulation coefficient by the previously determined global average I/Q ratio.

  • Patent number: 6006046
Abstract: A policing key for regulating the type of toner in a copying machine or other toner consuming machine includes a base mounted to the toner-consuming machine and a boss projecting from the base to a position between a port on the machine and a toner bottle cap prior to engagement. The boss protrudes above the periphery of the toner port that contacts an annular brim of the toner bottle cap, precluding the toner bottle from engaging the toner port while the key is in place. Only the annular brim of an approved toner bottle cap, which includes a notch associated with the boss for bypassing the policing key, can be used on in connection with the toner consuming machine. By varying the size and shape of the policing key, the restrictions on the type of toner used in a particular machine can be effectively controlled. In a preferred embodiment, a hardening gel is placed over the base of the policing key such that removal of the base will disturb the hardened gel and indicate a tampering of the key.

  • Patent number: 6005443
Abstract: A frequency synthesizer for generating two or more output frequency ranges using a Phase Locked Loop (PLL) circuit having a single voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). In a first embodiment, a frequency multiplier is connected to the output of the VCO. The output of the VCO and the output of the frequency multiplier are selectably fed back, depending upon which output frequency is desired. The output frequency may be taken directly from the VCO or the frequency multiplier. When the output frequency is taken from the output of the frequency multiplier, a control signal adjusts the gain of the phase detector and/or loop filter in order to compensate for the loop gain caused by the frequency multiplier. In a second embodiment, instead of adjusting the phase detector and/or loop filter gain, the values of the N and M dividers are adjusted. In a third embodiment, a frequency multiplier is connected to the output of the VCO and multiplies the output by a predetermined multiplier value.
