  • Patent number: 8327910
Abstract: A method of supporting a metal tube during an overcasting process includes radially supporting the metal tube from within an interior opening of the metal tube with a compressed granular material. The compressed granular material is held in place by a first stop and a second stop positioned at opposite axial ends of the metal tube. A tensile connector, such as a rod or a cable, interconnects and attaches the first stop and the second stop. Compressive radial forces exerted onto the metal tube during the overcasting process are transferred through the granular material and resisted by a tensile force in the tensile connector.

  • Patent number: 8327750
Abstract: A hydraulic control system includes an oil control valve to control oil flow within a valvetrain. The control valve varies the flow rate to actuate an engine component from a first position to a second position based upon fluid pressure from the control valve. Varying the flow rate through the control valve includes increasing the flow rate through the control valve to increase the pressure to a first level to actuate the engine component to the first position. After the engine component is actuated, the flow rate through the control valve is maintained at a level sufficient to maintain the engine component in the first position. To actuate the engine component to the second position the flow rate through the control valve is then decreased. The fluid flow rate through the control valve is then maintained at a level sufficient to maintain the engine component in the second position.

  • Patent number: 8328682
Abstract: A method controls an amount of time required to commence transmitting torque of an internal combustion engine equipped with a stop/start feature to a transmission configured to transmit the torque of the engine to drive-wheels in a vehicle. The method includes determining whether a start of the engine is likely. The method also includes pre-filling with fluid a hydraulically-actuated clutch that is configured to connect the engine to the transmission when the start of the engine is likely. Accordingly, the amount of time required to commence transmitting torque of the engine to the transmission is reduced. A system employs the method for controlling an amount of time required to commence transmitting torque of the engine.
