  • Patent number: 5385827
Abstract: A method of geochemical prospecting where samples of soil, sediment and rock in a geological area are collected and each sample is contacted with a leach solution of water, glucose and glucose oxidase. The oxidase acts upon the glucose to produce gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide. The leach solution reacts with manganese dioxide carrying trace metal elements and compounds in the samples to produce a leach reaction solution. The leach reaction solution and the residue of the said sample are separated, and the leach reaction solution is analyzed to determine the trace metal content present. From the analysis, the mineral content of the geological area is predicted.

  • Patent number: 5382208
Abstract: A magnetic-resistance control device for an exercise bicycle includes a platform connected with a base. A flywheel axle is rotatably mounted above the platform and is engaged with a rear wheel of the bicycle to rotate in an opposite direction thereof. A flywheel is made of magnetism-conducting material and is mounted to the flywheel axle for rotating therewith. A bracket is mounted on the platform. A U-shaped permanent magnet is slidably engaged on the bracket and defines an opening in which the flywheel is partly enclosed. The flywheel interacts with magnetic flux generated by the magnet when rotated such that a magnetic force is exerted on the flywheel, thereby generating a resistance to the flywheel. A driving device is provided for driving the magnet to reciprocate relative to the flywheel.

  • Patent number: 5186396
Abstract: A granular and liquid material spreading system mounted on a vehicle. Granular material is moved from a hopper to a delivery system using hydraulic pumps and motors. The hydraulic system also drives a liquid delivery system. A control system including a material computer is provided to control the amount of granular material and liquid material applied to a surface. The feed rate of liquid delivery is controlled electronically by programming the material computer as a function of the feed rate of the granular material. The liquid feed rate may be changed within a predetermined range. The level of liquid may be sensed to disengaged the liquid delivery system. Initiation of liquid delivery reduces the feed rate of granular material by a variably selected percentage.

  • Patent number: 5174877
Abstract: Apparatus for decontaminating a contaminated fluid by using photocatalytic particles. The apparatus includes a reactor tank for holding a slurry of the contaminated fluid and the photocatalytic particles ultraviolet light irradiates the surface of the slurry, thereby activating the photocatalytic properties of the particles. Stirring blades for continuously agitate the irradiated fluid surface maintaining the particles in a suspended state within the fluid. A cross flow filter is used for separating the fluid from the semiconductor powder after the decomposition reaction is ended. The cross flow filter is occasionally back flushed to remove any caked semiconductor powder. The semiconductor powder may be recirculated back to the tank for reuse, or may be stored for future use. A series of reactor tanks may be used to gradually decompose a chemical in the fluid. The fluid may be pretreated to remove certain metal ions which interfere with the photocatalytic process.
