  • Patent number: 5909249
Abstract: The effects of noise in a video processing system are reduced, resulting in improved image quality. A digital video signal containing a luminance component in Y color space is processed by increasing the amplitude of the luminance data in accordance with a nonlinear transfer function. As a result, low-amplitude components of the luminance signal are reduced. Subsequent quantization errors in transform coefficients produced by a spatial compression routine in a video encoder are consequently reduced. Inverse operations are performed at a video decoder to recover the original luminance data. The invention reduces quantization noise which is manifested particularly as dust-like variations in luminance intensity in an otherwise darkened region of a video image. A decoder apparatus is also presented.

  • Patent number: 5902305
Abstract: A surgical tensioning device for tensioning a tensioning element, such as a cable, that secures bone elements in position. The device includes a handle, a slide housed within the handle, and a holding element that is held on the slide. The slide is movable back and forth in a tensioning direction and contrary to the tensioning direction. The holding element secures the tensioning element on the slide during a movement of the slide in the tensioning direction. During a movement of the slide contrary to the tensioning direction, a blocking element held on the handle blocks a movement of the tensioning element contrary to the tensioning direction, and the holding element releases the tensioning element. The device is easily handled, and the tensioning of the tensioning element is not limited by the path of displacement of the slide.

  • Patent number: 5902303
Abstract: In order to connect the core undetachably to the holding element in the case of a pin-type holding element for an orthopaedic holding system with an elastically compressible, head-shaped widened portion and with a central opening, into which a core may be inserted, which prevents an elastic compression of the head-shaped widened portion by filling out the central opening in the region of the widened portion without expanding this, it is proposed that the core is displaceable in the opening between a locking position, in which it fills out the central opening in the region of the widened portion, and a release position plunging deeper into the central opening, in which it releases the central opening in the region of the widened portion and thus allows its elastic compression

  • Patent number: 5901178
Abstract: Auxiliary data is carried substantially imperceptibly with video transform data in combined transform samples according to a visibility threshold. The auxiliary data provides a capability for a copy protect scheme or verification of television viewing activity. The video transform samples are extracted from a compressed packetized data stream and normalized if required. The auxiliary data modulates data carrier sequences such as pseudo-noise (PN) spread spectrum signals in different spatial frequencies to provide auxiliary data subband samples, which are in turn combined with the video transform samples in one or more spatial frequencies to provide combined subband samples. The auxiliary data subband samples may be also spectrally shaped according to the video transform samples to improve concealment. The combined transform samples are then multiplexed into the packetized data stream. Full decompression of the video transform samples is not required.

  • Patent number: 5886736
Abstract: In a stereoscopic video transmission system, video pictures of lower and enhancement layers are transmitted in a particular order such that the number of pictures which must be temporarily stored prior to presentation is minimized. Furthermore, a decode time stamp (DTS) and presentation time stamp (PTS) for each picture can be determined to provide synchronization between the lower layer and enhancement layer pictures. Decoding may occur either sequentially or in parallel. In particular, a method is presented where the enhancement layer includes disparity-predicted pictures which are predicted using corresponding lower layer pictures. The video pictures are ordered such that the disparity-predicted enhancement layer pictures are transmitted after the corresponding respective lower layer pictures. The scheme is illustrated with a number of different specific examples.

  • Patent number: 5881362
Abstract: A method of reducing noise and ingress in cable return paths is disclosed in which the return frequency spectrum is divided into two regions; one frequency region being for transmissions from in-home devices such as television settops and personal computers, and another frequency region being for transmissions from communications devices called coaxial termination units located between the drop cable and the home coaxial wiring. By locating blocking filters between the drop cable and home coaxial wiring, undesirable signals emanating in the home in the second part of the return spectrum are prevented from entering the cable return system. The location of the blocking filter reduces the noise in the second part of the return spectrum substantially and allows the establishment of reliable telecommunications services on the cable return in such second part of the return spectrum.

  • Patent number: 5880523
Abstract: An anti-tamper integrated circuit (IC) apparatus is adapted for use with an IC that carries an active component, such as a secure processor, which requires a constant power signal to operate. If the power signal is interrupted, data is erased from a volatile memory of the secure processor. The memory is located within the IC package. An external power signal is coupled to the memory via a conductive path which is carried outside the housing and which may be embedded in a decoder board, micro-module substrate, or smart card body in which the IC is carried. The conductive path may carry the power signal directly to the memory, or it may carry the power signal to bias a transistor. Removal of the IC package from the decoder board, micro-module substrate or smart card, will open the conductive path and interrupt the power signal to the memory by causing a short circuit or an open circuit. As a result, the data stored in the memory will be lost. The apparatus therefore deters a pirate from tampering with the IC.
