  • Patent number: 3972793
Abstract: A continuous flow-through mercury cathode electrolysis cell is described having a parallel anode and cathode and a non-conductive porous diaphragm separator. The cathode chamber is constructed so as to develop turbulence in the catholyte flowing therethrough to effect the maximum contact between the mercury and the catholyte solute and to promote removal therefrom of any gaseous by-products. Built-in heat exchangers provide efficient control of temperature sensitive electrolyses.

  • Patent number: 3968035
Abstract: Super-oxygenation of bio-oxidizable fluid in a bio-oxidation reactor is accomplished by continuously transferring a stream of said fluid from the top of the column of fluid in said reactor to an oxidator vessel equipped with a high-shear agitator, introducing an oxygen containing gas into the bottom of the column of fluid in said vessel, rapidly revolving said agitator concurrently with the flow of said gas into said vessel, and continuously transferring a stream of said fluid from the top of the column of fluid in said vessel to the bottom of the column of fluid in said reactor.

  • Patent number: 3952095
Abstract: Antibiotic A-4696, produced by Actinoplanes sp., strain ATCC 23342, under submerged aerobic conditions in a liquid culture medium, isolated from the fermentation broth by adsorption on activated carbon, eluted therefom with a 1% sulfuric acid solution in acetone, and purified over sulfuric acid-washed alumina has antibacterial and growth promotant activity.

  • Patent number: 3942645
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to a feeding and rectifying method and apparatus for orienting articles of manufacture in a predetermined manner onto a moving conveyor means. The feeding and rectifying apparatus comprises essentially a system of maintaining a supply of articles in a hopper through which the articles are randomly discharged. The dispensing of the articles from the hopper is attained by effecting relative rotation between the discharge means and the hopper, and orientation or rectification of the articles thus removed is effected by cooperating camming means and gauging means mounted for relative rotation with respect to one another operating on the article.

  • Patent number: 3937655
Abstract: Stable antibiotic susceptibility test discs are prepared by depositing crystals of a .beta.-lactam-type-antibiotic on said discs, said crystals being dispersed in a volatile unreactive non-solvent vehicle, such dispersion being contacted with such discs and the vehicle evaporated therefrom.

  • Patent number: 3935450
Abstract: A device is described which is adaptable for use in aligning an X-ray diffraction camera to maximize the intensity of the X-rays contacting a substance undergoing diffraction analysis. Said device is comprised of an elongated housing adapted for placement in a port in said camera, a fluorescent material, such as .beta.-zinc sulfide, disposed laterally within said housing, and a conductive photo-cell, such as a cadmium-selenide cell, disposed laterally in said housing immediately behind said fluorescent material. When such device is disposed in the camera port, X-rays entering said camera through an oppositely positioned port bombard said fluorescent material which fluoresces and excites said photo-cell. The resistance of such an excited photo-cell, changing inversely with the intensity of said fluorescence, is measured by passing electric current from an external source through said photo-cell.The camera is aligned by adjusting it to the position where an ammeter indicates the maximum flow of such current.
