  • Patent number: 6491288
Abstract: A carburetor fuel mixture adjustment assembly has a threadable holder which suppresses rotation of a needle valve body disposed within an elongated receptacle defined within a carburetor body. The threadable holder is rigidly engaged within a threading chamber of the receptacle. During assembly, the needle valve body is extended through a bore of the holder as a threading portion of the valve body rotateable cuts an interior threading groove into the threadable holder. The threadable holder is held rigidly within the threading chamber by the carburetor body. A sealing holder is disposed within the receptacle axially inward of the threadable holder and is prevented from rotating within the receptacle by the threadable holder. A stem holder portion of the sealing holder assures a needle portion of the needle valve assembly remains concentrically disposed within an outlet orifice of a fuel chamber of the receptacle.

  • Patent number: 6491865
Abstract: A heat treat fixture is provided for supporting thin sheet-like work pieces, such as metal gasket layers, during heat treatment to achieve uniform hardness and properties of the work piece while preventing warpage. The fixture has porous, planar support walls that engage the opposite sides of the work piece. The walls include a coarse porous exoskeleton of expanded metal and an inner liner of wire mesh panels that are considerably finer than the coarse exoskeleton. The porous walls permit liquid heating and cooling media during heat treatment to flow freely through the walls for intimate contact with the work piece to achieve rapid uniform heating and cooling. The work piece is supported by the porous walls against movement out of its plane while being permitted to expand and contract within its plane to minimize warpage.

  • Patent number: 6490906
Abstract: The carriage has a main frame supported by caster wheels. A vertical mast is connected to a mounting stud on the main frame. A tubular sleeve is slideably mounted on the vertical mast and held in fixed positions by a pin. A winch fixed to the tubular sleeve has a winch cable that extends over a roller on top of the mast and has a hook that engages the sleeve to raise and lower the sleeve. A mounting stud on the sleeve receives an accessory base or cable guide pulley accessory. The accessory base receives adjustable attachments for supporting vehicle components such as doors, hoods, bumpers and trunk lids. The cable guide pulley guides the winch cable to pull dented sheet metal vertically or horizontally. The carriage is anchored in place, when pulling dented sheet metal, by a retainer.

  • Patent number: 6491143
Abstract: A spring having a main gas chamber, a secondary gas chamber and sealing surfaces which, during a portion of the stroke of the piston rod, define a gas tight seal between them to provide two separate gas chambers each providing a force acting on the piston rod in opposed directions to each other to reduce the net force on the piston rod. When the piston rod is near its fully extended position the sealing surfaces provide the gas tight seal and the net force on the piston rod is minimal and in the direction to move the piston rod to its fully extended position. Thus, until the cooperating surfaces are displaced to terminate the gas tight seal, only a slight force is required to initially move the piston rod from its fully extended position. This greatly reduces the impulse or impact force imparted to a press ram upon initial actuation of the fully extended piston rod. A second seal assembly may also be provided which controls the rate at which the piston rod assembly returns to its fully extended position.

  • Patent number: 6492039
Abstract: A composite multilayer material is described, which exhibits a relatively high specific load carrying capacity and relatively low wear. The composite multilayer material for plain bearings comprises a backing layer, a bearing metallayer (1), a first intermediate layer (2) of nickel, a second intermediate layer (3) of tin and nickel together with an overlay (4) consisting of copper and tin. The overlay (4) comprises a tin matrix (5), into which tin-copper particles (6) are incorporated, which consist of 39 to 55 wt. % copper, the rest being tin. At high temperatures, as occur in the case of plain bearings used in internal combustion engines, the tin migrates into the second intermediate layer (3) therebelow, resulting in concentration of the tin-copper particles (6).

  • Patent number: 6490172
Abstract: A circuit board having at least one resilient leg with a catch constructed to releasably engage a shoulder of a body to releasably retain the circuit board in the body. The circuit board may be slidably inserted into a slot of the body until the catch engages the shoulder to securely and releasably retain the circuit board within the body. Desirably, the circuit board has an outwardly extending shoulder at the end of the leg opposite the catch to limit the extent of insertion of the circuit board into the body so that the catch remains generally adjacent to the shoulder. This eliminates the play or looseness in the connection between the circuit board and body by preventing the circuit board from being significantly advanced beyond the point wherein the catch engages the shoulder.

  • Patent number: 6481403
Abstract: A diaphragm type carburetor which has a purge system to remove air and fuel vapor from the carburetor and to fill it with liquid fuel prior to starting an engine fed by the carburetor. The purge system has a primer valve actuated by moving a choke valve of the carburetor to its closed position to inject a small volume of liquid fuel into a throttle bore to provide a richer fuel and air mixture to the engine to facilitate starting it. Desirably, the small volume of liquid fuel is injected into the throttle bore in response to closing of the choke valve without requiring any additional steps such as depressing a button on the carburetor, to do so. Preferably, the choke valve is carried on a shaft which has at least one detent formed therein to provide a camming surface which actuates the primer valve as the choke valve is rotated from its open position to its closed position. Preferably, the choke valve shaft has a pair of detents.

  • Patent number: 6481895
Abstract: A crank shaft thrust bearing half includes a semi-cylindrical bearing shell carrying a pair of radially outwardly projecting thrust flanges having outer thrust surfaces. Radial grooves are formed in the thrust face to divide the surface into thrust pads. Each thrust pad has hydrodynamic contours which provide a hydrodynamic wedging action during rotation of the shaft to support high thrust loads. The thrust pad at the trailing end of the flange has an elevated land area spaced about 30° away from the trailing end and includes a long relief area from the land to the end to provide a no contact zone of the flange. Locating the land away from the trailing end and providing the relief zone shifts the peak pressure location away from the end and toward the middle of the bearing to relieve the trailing end from stress. Having radially oriented oil grooves with suitable width enables adequate oil supply and improved hydrodynamic oil film generating capability.

  • Patent number: 6481699
Abstract: An acceleration device of a carburetor for a two cycle engine with a rotary dual valve which controls air flow through both a scavenging passage and a separate air intake passage each extending through a carburetor body. The carburetor body houses a metering fuel chamber and an air reference chamber defined by a diaphragm between them. Fuel in the metering fuel chamber is discharged through a port into the air intake passage. An acceleration pump has an actuation chamber which communicates with the scavenging passage and a pump chamber which communicates with the air reference chamber and a membrane between them. During engine acceleration the membrane is displaced by a pressure introduced into the actuation chamber to forcibly send air into the air reference chamber from the pump chamber to move, the diaphragm into the metering fuel chamber, and thereby increase the fuel delivered to the air intake passage.

  • Patent number: 6478993
Abstract: A method of forming foamed articles suitable for refractory, thermal insulation and construction application in a form such as bricks, blocks, slabs and discs includes the preparation of homogeneous mixture of at least one oxygen-containing, water-insoluble raw material having a particle size <200 microns and at least one gas forming reagent having a particle size <130 microns. The mixture is humidified and shaped and then heated to a formation temperature sufficient to melt the raw material to develop an oxygen-containing molten liquid phase. This phase reacts at the formation temperature with the gas-forming reagent to induce a foamed structure which is then cooled to a solid state. The raw materials preferably make up 99-99.95 wt % of the mixture, and the gas forming reagent makes up the balance.
