  • Patent number: 6477941
Abstract: A heavy duty diesel piston includes upper and lower portions joined across a friction weld and internally contoured to provide a dual gallery structure including an outer annular gallery and a central gallery joined by passages for communicating cooling oil therebetween. The dual-gallery structure allows oil to enter from the outer gallery, which is formed by the circumferential annular recess in the crown and crown bottom, into the central gallery to cool the piston and particularly the central crown region exposed to hot combustion gases. The friction weld provides high structural integrity and minimizes the number of manufacturing steps need to attach the crown to the crown bottom.

  • Patent number: 6478153
Abstract: A package for framed and unframed single mirrors is disclosed. The package includes a recess projecting past the single mirror on all sides and in which the single mirror is to be so received that it is held in a substantially coplanar relation to the face delimiting the recess at the bottom of the package. The recess has dimensions such that there is a clearance between the delimiting edges of the recess and that of the single mirror. The clearance is adapted to allow for possible movement of the single mirror following a blow or impact. The package further includes a counter-abutment member that has a surface for contacting an external face of the mirror to retain the mirror between the recessed face and the counter-abutment member. There is also included a fastening mechanism for use in locating and mounting the counter-abutment member and the single mirror in the recess.

  • Patent number: 6477978
Abstract: A crossing arm assembly that includes either one or two hollow, tapered fishing rod bodies cantilevered at their butt ends to a beam-mounting portion of a combined pivot/bracket. A crosspiece connects the tips of the rods. The combined pivot/bracket pivotally attaches to a support at the front end of a bus to block pedestrian traffic from crossing immediately in front of the bus when the bus is stopped. The rods are tapered in mass and cross-sectional area from their butt ends to their tips. The taper concentrates rod mass closer to the support to reduce the tendency of cantilevered rods to sag under their own weight and/or to swing forward as the bus decelerates. The taper also increases rod flexibility to prevent plastic rod deformation and to reduce loads on the support when external forces are applied to the rods. A flap is pivotally attached to one of the rods to increase beam visibility without adding significant wind resistance.

  • Patent number: 6474579
Abstract: A generally horizontal wood comminuter has a crosswise rotor with comminuting knives moving in a path of rotation and a crosswise coacting anvil. A feed works provides a material support surface and a power-driven feed member above it for feeding material toward the rotor. The rotor is driven in an uphill path of rotation relative to the feed works. Lift arms pivoted rearwardly of the feed works pivotally carry the feed member for swinging vertical movement toward and away from the material support surface. A crosswise deflector plate is carried independently of the lift arms and extends toward the anvil and a crosswise lift arm plate coacts with the deflector plate to contain fragmented material. The anvil and a grate retainer preferably are pivotal to move together from an operative to an inoperative position.

  • Patent number: 6471379
Abstract: A waveguide illumination assembly for an automobile license plate includes a single light source and a transport or waveguide disposed outward from the license plate perimeter. The light source shines into one end of the waveguide. The waveguide has one or more arms, each of which has an array of reflective elements. Light is internally reflected as it travels through the waveguide until it strikes a reflective element, thereby directing light through an opposing longitudinal side of the waveguide arm and onto the license plate.

  • Patent number: 6469443
Abstract: An automotive lamp including a sealed envelope having a filament or other light emitting element contained therein, with the envelope being formed from a barium-silicate based glass that is essentially free of cadmium and that includes barium oxide in the range of 2.15%-2.25% by weight, strontium oxide in the range of 5.58%-5.82% by weight, potassium oxide in the range of 8.9%-9.3% by weight, and molybdenum oxide in the range of 0.068%-0.072% by weight. Specific amounts of other constituent components of the glass are also disclosed. The resulting lamp provides an amber color that meets applicable CIE chromaticity requirements for automotive lamps and the glass exhibits physical characteristics that are closely matched to that of lime glass, making it suitable for standard lamp manufacturing processes.

  • Patent number: 6467154
Abstract: An apparatus for press fitting inserts into corresponding receptacles in workpieces includes a press comprising a ram and a backup tool spaced from the ram. An insertion tool is alignable between the ram and the backup tool. An insert magazine feeds inserts to the insertion tool. A workpiece positioner sequentially moves each workpiece through receiving positions that align the receptacles with the insertion tool between the ram and the backup tool. The ram repeatedly engages the insertion tool to press fit an insert into each of the corresponding receptacles. The backup tool supports the workpiece against the force of press-fit insertion.

  • Patent number: 6464117
Abstract: A garment clamp apparatus for stabilizing a shirt during pressing of the sleeves. The apparatus is for use on a shirt pressing machine of the type having a housing, a plurality of press platens supported by the housing, and a movable tray carrying sleeve supports or bucks. The garment clamp apparatus includes a clamp for securely mounting the apparatus to the support structure of the housing. A frame extends forwardly from the clamp between the press platens. A pneumatic cylinder connects the frame with an extendable foot, which is movable linearly against the bias of a pair of return springs between a retracted position and an extended position. In the extended position, the foot engages the shirt in the area between the sleeves and holds the sleeves taut on the sleeve supports for the pressing operation. Guide shaft assemblies are disposed between the frame and the foot. The pneumatic cylinder can be connected into the existing pneumatic control system without modification of the control algorithm.

  • Patent number: 6463982
Abstract: A telescoping tire inflation apparatus for inflating wheel-mounted tires having a variety of different diameters and widths without requiring a hardware change. The apparatus includes a bell assembly that moves from a retracted position to an extended position where either an outer bell housing or an inner bell housing engages a larger-sized or smaller-sized wheel-mounted tire, respectively. A controller presets the inner bell housing to either a retracted position wherein the inner bell housing is disposed within the outer bell housing or an extended position where the inner bell housing telescopes downwardly from the outer bell housing. The inner bell housing can be moved to its extended position to push downward upon the sidewall of a relatively smaller-sized wheel-mounted tire, thereby creating a gap between the tire bead and the rim of the wheel through which compressed air supplied to the inner bell housing enters the tire at a high rate.

  • Patent number: 6464381
Abstract: A vehicle interior component and lighting assembly that includes a vehicle interior component having a fabric disposed over a substrate or foam layer, or both. An electroluminescent panel is located between the fabric and substrate/foam layer and directs light from the panel through the fabric. In this way, the light source can be effectively hidden when not in use and can be incorporated into the interior component in a manner that requires little space. The vehicle interior component can be any of a number of different interior articles, including, for example, a headliner, door panel, vehicle seat, rear deck, sun visor, and trunk panel. Also disclosed are vehicle interior illumination systems using touch switches and electroluminescent panels to provide back lighting of the switch and/or vehicle interior illumination through the switch.

  • Patent number: 6457685
Abstract: The portable bow and long gun holder has a base plate and an upright connected to the base plate by a hinge. A weapon bottom end holder is provided on the base plate rear end. A weapon upper holder assembly with bow engaging surfaces and a gun barrel engaging surface is attached to an upper end of the upright. A lock assembly holds the upright in a weapon support position or frees the upright to pivot to a transport position parallel with the base. Outriggers are clamped to the upright in ground engaging positions to provide lateral stability. An arrow cutout in one side of the upright permits an arrow to be attached to a bow supported by the holder. The upright is reversible to change the position of the arrow cutout. The weapon upper holder is also reversible. A tree stand clamp clamps the base plate to the tree stand.
