    Abstract: A preparative-scale gas chromatographic system has conduits and valves adapted for analysis and collection of low volatility effluent. An injection site is provided for alternately supplying liquid solvent for removing condensed effluent from the system when the flow of effluent is terminated. Conduits are joined within the thermal conductivity detector of the system to prevent condensation at the joint. Conduits are provided with copper jackets which are coupled to sources of thermal energy to prevent condensation within the conduits. A trap filter provides backpressure in the collection system wherein recovery of condensed effluent in the filter is facilitated by the smooth surface of the filter.

    Abstract: The method for producing the disclosed material comprises chemical vapor depositing on the substrate a substantially columnar, intermediate layer of tungsten and chemical vapor depositing on the intermediate layer a non-columnar, substantially lamellar outer layer of a mixture of tungsten and tungsten carbide. The tungsten carbide comprises W.sub.2 C, W.sub.3 C, or a mixture of both wherein the ratio of the thickness of the tungsten intermediate layer to the thickness of the outer layer is at least: (a) 0.35 in the case of tungsten plus W.sub.2 C in the outer layer, (b) 0.6 in the case of a mixture of tungsten and W.sub.3 C in the outer layer and (c) 0.35 in the case of mixtures of tungsten and W.sub.2 C and W.sub.3 C in the outer layer. The chemical vapor deposition steps are carried out at pressures within the range of 1 Torr to 1,000 Torr and temperatures within the range of about 300.degree. to about 650.degree. C.

    Abstract: An improved highly erosive and abrasive wear resistant multi-layered coating system on a substrate which provides protection against impact of large particles is disclosed comprising a plurality of composite layers. In each of the composite layers, the first layer closest to the substrate comprises tungsten of sufficient thickness to confer substantial erosion and abrasion wear resistance characteristics to the coating system and a second layer deposited on the first layer comprises a mixture of tungsten and tungsten carbide and the tungsten carbide comprises W.sub.2 C, W.sub.3 C, or a mixture of both. Because the resulting coating system has enhanced high cycle fatigue strength over the substrate, the coating system is especially useful on such structures as turbine blades and similar articles of manufacture where such chemical vapor depositing the first and second layers at a temperature in the range of about 300.degree. to about 550.degree. C.

A substantially pure tungsten layer is chemical vapor deposited on the internal wear surface of the body of the structure followed by a chemical vapor deposited top coating comprising a mixture of tungsten and tungsten carbide. The tungsten carbide is selected from the group consisting of W.sub.2 C, W.sub.3 C, and mixtures thereof and is fine grained, non-columnar and has a substantially layered microstructure. Also described are structures formed by the method.

    Abstract: Poly(alkylene carbonates) of controlled molecular weight are made by copolymerizing carbon dioxide and one or more oxirane compounds using zinc polycarboxylate catalyst in the presence of a sterically hindered organic proton donor. The acidity of the donor is in the range of 3 to 20 pK.sub.a and the steric quality of the donor is such that it has a steric parameter (E.sub.s) of -0.38 or less. The molecular weight of the polymer can be regulated by altering the level of proton donor over a range which does not adversely affect catalyst productivity. Benzoic acid and phenol are examples of suitable proton donors. The preferred catalyst is one made from zinc oxide and a dicarboxylic acid, such as glutaric acid or adipic acid.

    Abstract: Extremely hard, fine grained tungsten/carbon alloys are described which are produced by thermochemical deposition. The alloys consist primarily of a mixture of a substantially pure tungsten phase and at least one carbide phase wherein the carbide phase consists of W.sub.2 C or W.sub.3 C or a mixture of W.sub.2 C and W.sub.3 C. The disclosed tungsten/carbon alloys are free of columnar grains and consist essentially of extremely fine, equiaxial crystals. Also disclosed is a method of producing the disclosed material.

The invention also discloses a method for making these coated substrate products.

    Abstract: A method for producing the disclosed material comprises introducing into a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor a mixture of process gases comprised essentially of (1) tungsten hexafluoride, (2) a volatile oxygen- and hydrogen-containing organic compound, and (3) hydrogen; controlling the ratio of the tungsten hexafluoride to the oxygen- and hydrogen-containing organic compound within the CVD reactor so that the W/C atomic ratio is within the range of about 0.5 to about 15; controlling the reaction temperature so it is within the range of above about 300.degree. to less than about 650.degree. C.; controlling the total pressure within the range of about 1 Torr. to about 1,000 Torr.; and controlling the ratio of H.sub.2 to WF.sub.6 within the range of about 4 to about 20; to produce W and W.sub.2 C, W and W.sub.3 C, or W and W.sub.2 C and W.sub.3 C.

During the heat treating, the coated substrate is heated to the deposition temperature or not substantially above the deposition temperature in a non-reactive atmosphere. The heat treating temperature is sufficient to confer a desired improvement in erosive and abrasive wear resistance in the outer coating but does not result in substantial degradation of the mechanical properties of the substrate or in formation of undesirable inter-metallic layers".

    Abstract: A highly erosive and abrasive wear resistant composite coating system is described in which an intermediate layer of substantially pure tungsten is deposited on a substrate. An outer layer is then deposited comprised of a mixture of tungsten and tungsten carbide, with the tungsten carbide consisting of W.sub.2 C, W.sub.3 C or a mixture of both. The thickness of the intermediate layer is sufficient to confer substantial erosive and abrasive wear resistance characteristics on the composite coating system. The ratio of the thickness of the intermediate layer to the thickness of the outer layer is controlled and is at least above 0.30 in the cases of W+W.sub.3 C, W+W.sub.2 C+W.sub.3 C and W+W.sub.2 C coatings.

    Abstract: A system and method for detecting trace levels of a sample gas in a mass spectrometer having a vacuum chamber with a vacuum pump, an ionizer, extracting and imaging lens and a detector. A high pressure sample gas pulse is introduced into the vacuum chamber through a small orifice to produce a high density of sample gas in a region near the orifice. The density of the sample gas pulse is sufficient to substantially sweep residual background gas from the path of the pulse. A portion of the sample gas pulse is ionized and ions are extracted and imaged.

    Abstract: A multipiece susceptor assembly that includes a generally flat polyhedron shaped top and bottom defining a plurality of facets on which panels are secured for supporting wafers to be processed. Various embodiments are disclosed including a top plate that receives a slide. The polyhedron shape portion further includes a multifaced side which includes an open side face that receives a single face mounted on the slide. A bottom plate is provided that fits within the bottom frame. The single side face structure to mount on the slide and the bottom frame prevents displacement of the slide and holds the slide against the frame during rotation of the susceptor. In another embodiment each individual panel is secured to the top plate by a hanger on the panel inserted in a cavity on the top plate while the panel is secured to the bottom plate in a locking relation by a notch in the panel interfitting with a triangular tab extending outward from the bottom plate.

At least one stiffening element extends between the outer surfaces within this volume. The stiffening element defines a volume and has at least one wall intersecting each of the outer surfaces. The stiffening element and the outer surfaces are made up of a chemically vapor deposited material having the desired high stiffness to weight ratio and being formed as a monolithic structure having a thickness of at least about 1 millimeter. These structures have such diverse uses as aircraft parts and skis.
