Abstract: In a ebullated bed process, a residual hydrocarbon oil is hydrotreated at a reaction temperature of 750.degree. F. to 875.degree. F. and pressure of 1500 psig to 10,000 psig in a single or multiple reaction zone. A sample of hydrotreated liquid effluent is flash separated to obtain a nominal 650.degree. F.+ liquid which is magnified to 100.times.. Area precent, average diameter and maximum size of insoluble agglomerates is measured from the magnified view. Reactor temperature is varied with the area percent, average diameter and maximum size of insoluble agglomerates to control downstream sediment formation and plug formation at an acceptable level.

Abstract: In the preparation of an overbased calcium sulfonate, it has been found that adding the calcium hydroxide during the carbonation reaction reduced solid waste. An initial charge of 15 to 25 wt % of the total calcium hydroxide is added to initiate the carbonation reaction. The balance is added by a process whereby calcium hydroxide concentration remains low in the reaction admixture to reduce amorphous calcium carbonate residence time. In the process, calcium hydroxide is added in amounts whereby the molar ratio of carbon dioxide to the sum of calcium hydroxide and calcium oxide is about 0.8.

Abstract: A method has been discovered for controlling catalytic reactor bed temperature in an ebullated bed process. A sour, aromatic feedstock is mixed with a conventional ebullated bed residual oil feedstock in a controlled ratio. The aromatic feedstock is catalytically cracked and thereby releases heat. The flow rate of the aromatic feedstock is controlled to maintain the reactor bed at a selected catalytic reaction temperature. Both feedstocks are upgraded to a fuel boiling range fraction and the fired heater is eliminated for the conventional feedstock and optionally for the hydrogen-containing gas feed stream as well.

Abstract: A polymer concrete system has been discovered which is useful in road overlay and repair. The binder for this aggregate-filled system consists of a liquid epoxy resin and triethyleneglycol diamine or tetraethylene glycol diamine curing agent. A piperazine accelerator ensures adequate strength development after short cure times at ambient temperatures. The binder-aggregate system is relatively flexible, has excellent compression and flexural strength and adheres well to the substrate. The system is distinguished by its fast cure to a compression strength of 3000 psi which will support automotive traffic.
Abstract: An improved method of controlling catalyst inventory in the reactor of an ebullated bed process has been discovered. Pressure differentials are measured to calculate a catalyst inventory characterization factor. Aged catalyst is withdrawn and fresh catalyst added in an amount to reestablish the value of the factor. The catalyst to oil ratio is maintained despite changes in bed ebullation, gas and liquid holdups and oil residence time changes.
Abstract: A method of stabilizing pyrophoric hydrotreating catalyst drums has been discovered. The dry catalyst is introduced into drums which have been purged with an inert gas such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide. A continuous layer of gelatinized starch is applied to the top of the catalyst, sealing it from air. The drum lid is clamped on and the catalyst is stored or transported. The gelatinized starch seal does not impair the catalyst for regeneration or metals reclaiming.

Abstract: In an ebullated bed process, it has been found that in switching from one sediment yielding feedstock to a second sediment yielding feedstock that the transient sediment concentration is 5 to 8 times the steady state concentration. Such transients have caused unit shutdowns with lost production time.A method has been found which avoids these high transient sediment concentrations. Second feedstock is added incrementally (1 vol % to 2 vol % of the final rate) over the period of a week or more and sediment in the product analyzed. After full second feedstock rate is achieved, first feedstock is reduced incrementally with sediment analysis. Higher unit utilization is achieved with the corresponding increased yearly production.

Abstract: In an ebullated bed process, a residual hydrocarbon oil and a hydrogen containing gas is passed upwardly through an ebullated bed of catalyst in a hydrocracking zone at a temperature in the range of 650.degree. F. to 950.degree. F. and pressure of 1000 psia to 5000 psia. FCCU catalyst fines are added to the ebullated bed in an amount of 15 wt % to 21 wt % of total catalyst comprising hydrocracking catalyst and fines. A hydrocracked oil is recovered characterized by having a reduced sediment content.
Abstract: The apparatus comprises a chair having a frame with a forward and rear transverse supporting members. A seat is mounted to the forward and rear transverse members and further comprises a rear attachment between the seat and the rear transverse supporting member to secure the rear of the seat to the frame. A front attachment member extends from the seat and is adapted to engage the forward transverse supporting member when the rear attachment member engages the rear transverse supporting member. A clip adapted to engage the forward transverse support member secures engagement between the front attachment member and the forward transverse supporting member. The seat is constructed having a peripheral groove which is disposed behind or underneath the seat so as not to be visible when standing in front of the chair.
Abstract: In an ebullated bed reactor it has been found that an improved gas-liquid separator effectively removes gas from recycle liquid used to ebullate the catalyst bed. The gas-liquid separator comprises a cup with a plurality of riser conduits. Helical members are positioned within the riser conduits which impart a tangential velocity component to the fluid. Cyclone separators effect the final liquid-vapor separation. Vapor is directed to a vapor rich zone in the reactor.
Abstract: A control system controls a lubricating oil dewaxing apparatus. The temperature of waxy oil flowing through the apparatus is controlled. A sequential plurality of temperature sensing means senses the temperature of the waxy oil. A Comparing Means determines an isothermal heat transfer zone corresponding to latent heat transfer wax crystallization. Temperature upstream of the isothermal zone is controlled to a selected chilling rate. Temperature downstream of the isothermal zone is controlled to a selected filtering temperature. The control system effects the growth of wax crystals of a uniform and moderate size for optimum filtering rate and oil content.

Abstract: A bubble cap assembly and distributor plate is revealed uniquely suited for a reactor in an ebullated bed process. In the riser of the bubble cap assembly a ball check valve is mounted on a valve seat. An orifice mixer below the valve seat delivers a homogeneous vapor-liquid mixture to the orifice in the valve seat thereby minimizing slug flow which causes destructive valve chatter. The fluid outlet port is positioned in the riser to hydraulically limit ball travel between the valve seat and the cap, eliminating the need for pins or other restraints.

Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for enhancing the performance of filters, particularly oil filters for internal combustion engines. The apparatus includes a frame having a top and bottom section connected together by a plurality of spaced longitudinal elements. The longitudinal elements are disposed radially apart from the filter housing so as to create a flow path for circulating air to cool the fluid within the filter. A magnet is mounted in the bottom section to help attract small magnetic particles which may not have been removed by the filtering medium within the filter. A wire coil is mounted in the top section to further assist in removal of suspended magnetic particles and to aid in precipitation of carbonaceous materials suspended in the circulating oil.
