  • Patent number: 5067491
Abstract: A blood pressure monitoring device includes a pressure sensing element mounted or a probe tip or in a catheter tip adapted for insertion into a patient's blood stream. The element includes a pressure transducer having a micromachined diaphragm which flexes in response to pressure changes. The flexes are converted by the transducer to electrical signals which pass back through the catheter to a display. The element and the catheter are conformally coated with a thin layer of parylene which insulates the device from the deleterious effects which blood components such as water and ions would otherwise have on various components of the device.

  • Patent number: 5017473
Abstract: A method for separation-free solid phase immunoassay of an analyte includes contacting an antianalyte attached to the surface of a solid support with the analyte, a light absorbing material and a tracer for the analyte which includes a label. The resulting mixture is incubated and chemiluminescence is generated. All of the chemiluminescence is absorbed by the light absorbing material except that associated with the bound tracer whereby the only emission detected is due to the bound tracer. Since emission from free tracer in the fluid phase of the assay medium is not detected, separation of the bound and free fractions is unnecessary. The invention includes a kit of materials useful in performing an immunoassay in accordance with the method of the invention.

  • Patent number: 5015238
Abstract: An oburator includes a solid substantially stiff rod of a nonhydrophilic polymer coated with a layer of a hydrophilic polyurethane which may have an antithrombogenic agent bulk distributing therein. When the hydrophilic polyurethane comes into contact with an aqueous liquid such as water, saline or a body fluid, it absorbs the liquid and expands thereby enlarging the diameter of the obturator. Another aspect of the invention is an assembly of a catheter and the obturator of the invention. When the obturator is emplaced in the catheter and brought into contact with a liquid, it expands, releases the antithrombogenic agent and contacts the lumen wall of the catheter thereby forming a seal which prevents backflow of a body fluid.

  • Patent number: 5001054
Abstract: A method for monitoring the glucose level in a body fluid uses an apparatus which includes a conjugate of glucose oxidase and a fluorescent dye coated onto an optical fiber in contact with the body fluid, a source of excitation light and a fluorescence emission detector. Glucose is oxidized by oxygen in the body fluid causing a decrease in oxygen concentration at the enzyme. The fluorescent dye is sensitive to oxygen quenching so that, when the oxygen concentration decreases, fluorescence emission increases in direct proportion to the glucose concentration in the fluid.
