  • Patent number: 4232650
Abstract: A Baffled Stove is described having a generally rectangular heating structure with its lower or bottom portion adapted to form a firebox for receiving fuel such as wood or coal. A primary air passageway is provided for introducing air into the heating structure at or near the level of the firebox. Controls are also provided to adjust the quantity of primary air introduced into the heating structure. A hinged door is mounted in the front door of the rectangular heating structure for introducing fuel into the firebox. A secondary air inlet is in communication with a conduit positioned in a plane horizontal to the firebox to provide a baffle for directing the flow of the products of combustion and also for preheating the secondary air as it passes therethrough. The preheated air exits at a point opposite to the secondary air inlet.

  • Patent number: 4187567
Abstract: A waterbed construction having an inner rigid frame member and a supported flexible bottom member for holding and laterally supporting a water filled bladder or vinyl mattress. The inner rigid frame member and bladder are covered and interlocked by a cushioned "cap" having rigid side walls and a flexible top member. The cushioned cap fits closely over the inner rigid frame member in much the same manner as a cover fits over a box. This arrangement provides additional strength for containing the lateral forces generated by the water filled bladder and at the same time provides maximum sitting comfort. In addition, the use of a close fitting cap having outer rigid side walls in combination with an inner rigid walled frame member, provides a sealed container for the bladder and virtually eliminates the possibility of water loss in the event the bladder develops a leak.

  • Patent number: 4060860
Abstract: A braking system has been designed for controlling the rotational momentum of a cover collecting drum during the extention and retraction sequence of a motorized swimming pool cover apparatus. The braking system provides a compact, substantially even roll on the collecting drum. The swimming pool cover apparatus includes a rotatable and axially slidable shaft supportably carried by a number of end bearing standards. A fixed, free wheeling, cover collecting drum is carried on the shaft along with a pair of free wheeling, draw cord collecting reels positioned at each end of the drum. A clutch-like system is provided whereby the drum and the reels can be selectively engaged and/or disengaged from the shaft by rotating the shaft first in one direction then in the other.

  • Patent number: 4020601
Abstract: An electrically operated grinding wheel is described wherein the grinding wheel is adapted with a slidable tool rest member which will automatically position itself at a preselected distance from the grinding wheel. As the grinding wheel becomes worn and its wheel diameter decreased, the slidable tool rest member will be automatically moved towards the grinding wheel and a safe operational spacing between the grinding wheel and the tool rest member maintained. This is achieved through a motorized gear train which is actuated by a photoelectric cell carried within the housing of the tool rest member. Another feature is that as the wheel is worn and approaches a preselected minimum diameter, a switch is automatically actuated which will turn off the power to the grinding wheel preventing its operation until such time that the worn grinding wheel is replaced.

  • Patent number: 4013241
Abstract: A magnetic braking and clutch system is disclosed which includes a two piece stator-like housing fixed to an opposing member by means of long stemed bolts passing axially through openings bored along the peripheral edge of the stator-like housing. A plurality of rod-shaped magnets are carried axially within the stator-like housing and is capable of being moved radially towards the center of the housing by a positioning rotor rotatably carried therein. Adjacent to the stator-like housing is a rotor housing carrying a magnetic braking disc having a plurality of bar magnets extending radially from the center thereof. The magnetic braking disk is keyed to one end of a rotatable shaft for axial movement thereon.

  • Patent number: 4001900
Abstract: A swimming pool cover constructed from a flexible impervious material wherein the leading or forward edge thereof is raised above the pool's surface. The above swimming pool cover is adapted with a longitudinal or lateral beaded side edge which is slidably held within a longitudinal open channel or track cut into a slideway member mounted to the deck or longitudinal margins of a swimming pool. The leading or forward edge of the cover is also beaded or thickened so that it may be received and held within a track or channel fixed to a bowed tubular member. Fixed to either end of the bowed tubular member are pivotally mounted legs having rotatably mounted tandem wheels fixed thereto. To prevent the bowed member from "rolling" after the pool cover has been extended, an outwardly extending stop member is fixed to the outer wall of each end of the tubular member for contacting one of the leg members and thereby limit the bowed member's "rolling" action.

  • Patent number: 4000252
Abstract: A means and method of radioimmunoassay is disclosed whereby an insolubilized or solid phosphor and binding agent such as an antibody are associated by chemical or physical means to provide a solid scintillating immunoadsorbent cell. This cell is capable of selectively binding or retaining radioactive or labeled antigens and transmitting radioactive energy to a phosphor or photon emitting substance. The luminescence emitted by the phosphor is measured by a scintillator counter and is directly proportional to the radioactive energy released by the labeled antigen bound to the antibody. Upon completion of the measurement the labeled antigens are separated from the antibody and removed from the cell which may now be used for additional analysis. A convenient means for obtaining a solid phosphor and/or binding agent is to combine them by physical or chemical means or to shield one from the other by a separating barrier.

  • Patent number: 3979782
Abstract: A protective swimming pool covering apparatus is disclosed wherein the apparatus includes a flexible impervious cover sheet capable of being extended and retracted over a swimming pool. Each lateral side of the cover sheet is adapted with a longitudinally beaded side edge which is slideably held in a longitudinal open channel or track cut into a slideway member fixed to the longitudinal margins of the swimming pool. The longitudinal opening of the slideway means is sized such that it is slightly smaller than the diameter of the beaded side edge such that under normal operating conditions the bead will be slideably held within the track or channel. However, under conditions of excessive lateral stress, the bead will be sufficiently compressed and be pulled through the opening and away from the channel. In addition, the end sections of the slideway means is adapted with a stationary channeled guide piece having a pair of flared end sections and a longitudinal side opening.

  • Patent number: 3938829
Abstract: A boat latching device is disclosed for use on boat trailers. The latching device includes an elongated support member and a bow conforming guide member having a spring-loaded latching mechanism mounted thereto. An adjustable or resiliently mounted bow stop member is attached at or near the top of the support member. The entire latching device is mounted at the forward end of a boat trailer so that it can receive and hold an elongated eye fixed to the bow of a boat.
