Abstract: A novel method and apparatus for one-step linking of membrane permeation of hydrogen to the generation by steam reforming of a methanol-like fuel that comprises bounding a longitudinal flow path of a methanol reformate stream comprising hydrogen, steam and the oxides of carbon and methanol, by a thin palladium-bearing membrane; promoting turbulence in the flow to cause a predominant amount, but not all, of the hydrogen in the stream transversely to permeate the membrane as substantially pure hydrogen passing transversely into a region external to the bounding membrane, thereby simultaneously generating and permeating the hydrogen; and maintaining the hydrogen in the external region at least at atmospheric pressure, but at a lower pressure than the partial pressure of the residual hydrogen in the resulting depleted reformate.
Abstract: A system and method of preloading linear motion bearings arranged to move between two orthogonal surfaces of each of a rail and an overlapping carriage, wherein a permanent magnet linear electric motor with a high attractive force between the coils and the magnets is inclined at an acute angle to the surfaces, such that the attractive force creates a preload force on each of the bearings; the magnet being fixed as a track in a trough along the rail, and the coils being recessed in a groove in the inner top surface of the carriage, both oriented at said acute angle, and providing through such preloading, a high degree of stiffness and load capacity in all degrees of freedom of the carriage except in the linear direction of movement along the rail.
Abstract: A system for binding printed works consisting of sheets each comprising a first portion for reading and a second portion for binding. Abstract: This invention relates to thermoplastic elastomeric polyolefin alloys (preferably polypropylene alloys) and the processes for preparing naturally compatibilized polyolefin alloys using a "one-pot" polymerization of a single monomer (preferably propylene), whereby two homopolymers having different stereoisomeric structures are produced (preferably stereoregular and stereoirregular), as well as a third block copolymer having alternating sequences of the two structural segments of the two homopolymers; and wherein catalyst compositions are used enabling the direct synthesis of naturally compatibilized polymer blends comprising for components: two organometallic complexes of group IVB elements, a catalyst which irreversibly reacts with at least one ligand on the transition metal complexes converting it to catalytically active state, and a hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl, or oxyhydrocarbyl compound of Group IIA, IIB, and IIIA metals, which functions as a cross-over agent.

Abstract: An improved method of and apparatus for manufacturing thin plastic sheet air-inflated shipping or storage cushions or pillows for delicate articles and the like involving the use of novel retractable air-injection straws and plastic blank supporting and sealing techniques.
Abstract: A novel low cost/high performance multi-port internally cached dynamic random access memory architecture called `AMPIC DRAM`, and consequentially a unique system architecture which eliminates current serious system bandwidth limitations, providing a means to transfer blocks of data internal to the chip, orders of magnitude faster than the traditional approach, and with the chip also interconnecting significantly higher numbers of resources with substantially enhanced performance and at notably lower cost. Through use of a system configuration based on this novel architecture and working equally efficiently for both main memory functions and as graphics memory, thus providing a truly low cost, high performance unified memory architecture.
Abstract: A new method of creating thin free-standing pin hole-free hydrogen-selective palladium-bearing membranes that comprises thinning cold-rolled membranes by chemical etching or electrochemically electrolyzing of at least one membrane surface, and novel membranes produced thereby and including membranes with selected portions only thereof so thinned.

Abstract: Semiconductor wafers, circuit boards and similar multi-layer structures are optically inspected at high speeds with the aid of preferably a pair of oppositely and inclinedly directed laser beams at inclined angles to the vertical and the wafer surface to cause fluorescence by a photoresist layer carrying conductor patterns, defects in which are to be inspected, and using preferably a time-delay-integration CCD imaging camera for recording a fluorescent resist surface image accentuating the non-fluorescing conductor pattern thereupon, while masking all light from layers therebelow.

Abstract: A novel architecture for high speed dual symmetric full duplex operation of otherwise asymmetrical telephone subscribers--central office modems that provide relatively high data rate downloading from the telephone central office but relatively low data rate uploading from the subscriber stations, whereby, through direction swapping by such duplex operation, equal downloading and uploading can be achieved, or other increasing or grate swapping or variation of the uploading rate capability, as desired. ADSL modems in particular, being reconfigured to provide symmetrical rate downloading and uploading and/or configured direction assignment of rates.
Abstract: This invention is a simplified combination backpack, cot and tent formed and integrated around a lightweight hinged metal frame which unfolds at hinge to form cot and internal tent frame structure. The tent, with draft skirt stored within the two halves of the folded frame, is then erected for shelter protection. After the frame is unfolded, the backpack will be suspended from the underside of the cot, off the ground and accessible from inside the tent through the cot fabric by means of a zipper.

Abstract: The indicator light is constituted by a panel supporting juxtaposed and alternating neon tubes of blue, yellow, green and red color, these colors being assigned to the cardinal points north, east, south and west respectively. These tubes have voltage applied by means of a selector controlled by a weather vane, activating permanently the neon tubes of the color corresponding to the position of the weather vane. A series of colored lamps, displaying the Beaufort scale, indicates the wind velocity by means of a selector controlled by the anemometer. Colored light sources indicate the air pollution level.
