  • Patent number: 4839016
Abstract: A curved-surface cassette/gel system is disclosed in which the walls of a cassette and the major surfaces of a slab-shaped electrophoresis gel in the cassette coact to substantially exclude liquid or gas from between either wall and the major surfaces of the gel. Exclusion is accomplished by exerting a normal force at all points on the walls of the cassette and at all points on the major surfaces of the gel. A curvature may be present in at least one wall of the cassette and in at least one major surface of the cassette. A cassette headpiece may be divided by septa which form an edge seal with the slab gel. The spaces formed between the septa function as wells into which sample materials may be placed.

  • Patent number: 4839656
Abstract: A radio position determination and message transfer system is implemented using a pair of satellites in geostationary orbit for relaying interrogation and reply signals between a ground station and a user-carried transceiver. The user position is calculated based on the arrival times of reply signals received at the ground station via the two satellites, the known transmission time of the interrogation signal from the ground station, and the user's elevation on the surface of the earth. The elevation is derived from a stored terrain map providing local terrain elevations at a plurality of points on the earth's surface. The stored terrain map allows accurate position fixes to be obtained for surface users regardless of the deviation of the local terrain from the spherical or ellipsoidal model of the earth's surface.

  • Patent number: 4827278
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for controlling the velocity of a stream of droplets in a continuous ink jet printing system comprises controlling, from a system cabinet, the velocity of the stream expelled from the print head through a nozzle under pressure from a pressure source, in dependence upon a measured pressure of the ink in accordance with a predetermined relationship between the velocity and the pressure. On start up the system calibrates for the pressure differential P.sub.c due to the conduit length and the relative elevation of the print nozzle; and a determination of the ink viscosity in made at predetermined times. Thereafter the velocity is controlled in dependence upon a required pressure value P.sub.r in accordance with a stored look-up table, the required pressure value at any time being determined substantially by a given relationship.
