  • Patent number: 5685972
Abstract: Cracked naphtha feeds such as FCC naphtha and coker naphtha are upgraded to produce chemical grade BTX (benzene, toluene, xylene with ethylbenzene) while co-producing a low sulfur gasoline of relatively high octane number. The cracked, sulfur-containing naphtha is processed by hydrodesulfurization followed by treatment over an acidic catalyst, preferably a zeolite such as ZSM-5 or zeolite beta with a hydrogenation component, preferably molybdenum. The treatment over the acidic catalyst in the second step restores the octane loss which takes place as a result of the hydrogenative treatment and results in a low sulfur gasoline product to permit a low sulfur gasoline of blending quality to be obtained with the BTX. The BTX can be extracted from the second stage effluent, preferably from a C.sub.6 -C.sub.8 fraction of this effluent.

  • Patent number: 5681450
Abstract: A cyclone and process for fluidized catalytic cracking of heavy oils is disclosed. Gas and entrained solids are added around a clean gas outlet tube in a cyclone body. Solids and some gas are withdrawn via a solids outlet and discharged into a catch chamber. Some of the gas discharged with the solids into the catch chamber is returned to the interior of the cyclone body via an opening in the cyclone. Chaotic reflux of gas back into the cyclone via the solids outlet is eliminated. The device may be used as an FCC regenerator third stage separator or to improve other gas/solid separations.

  • Patent number: 5643537
Abstract: Vertical, small diameter cyclones are disclosed. Gas and fines are added tangentially or axially around a clean vapor outlet tube in a cylindrical cyclone. A vortex of solids and some gas passes into a contiguous and axially aligned cylindrical vortex containment means from which solids are withdrawn via a vertical slot in a sidewall of the containment means. 0-5 micron particle removal is enhanced. An FCC process uses the cyclones as a third stage separator.

  • Patent number: 5414186
Abstract: The present invention provides an acid catalyzed isoparaffin-olefin alkylation process which improves process stability and safety by storing the acid in an excess of an additive which reduces the fuming tendency of the mixture, for example, a sulfone. Acid is stripped from the additive and concentrated prior to charging the acid to the alkylation reaction zone. Specifically, because the stored solution of acid in the additive is more dilute than can be effectively used for isoparaffin-olefin alkylation, the acid is concentrated prior to charging the catalyst mixture to the reaction zone. The invention solves the problem of conjunct polymer accumulation by diluting the conjunct polymer with a relatively large volume of the additive and continuously regenerating a slipstream of the dilute acid/additive mixture.
