Abstract: An improved check valve is disclosed for use in a system for sequentially delivering primary and secondary solutions through a common conduit. The check valve comprises a hollow housing with an inlet and an outlet connected to an enlarged intermediate portion. Sealed at its periphery in the enlarged portion is a flexible diaphragm characterized by having foraminous means in at least its outer portion and imperforate means in its central portion. The imperforate means is spaced from a valve seat surrounding the passage at the inner end of the inlet so that when the primary solution flows from the inlet to the outlet, it will pass freely around the imperforate means and through the foraminous means. When an increase in pressure, even though slight, is exerted against the diaphragm caused by flow of the secondary solution in the direction of the outlet to the inlet, the diaphragm moves towards the inlet causing the imperforate means to seal against the valve seat and stop the flow of the primary solution.
Abstract: The device comprises a closed container with a breathing tube and a means for variably adjusting the size of an aperture into the container. A transparent inclined tube is mounted on the container and houses a moveable air flow indicating member. The tube has a passage at the top leading into the container and a vent at the bottom of the tube allows air to enter to move the flow indicating member up the inclined tube. Air drawn from the container by inspiring through the breathing tube is replaced in part by air entering through the variable aperture means and by the air entering through the vent. By adjusting the size of the variable aperture, one can determine inspiratory capacity as correlated with the amount of air necessary to move the flow indicating member to the top of the tube or to an intermediate position in the tube.

Abstract: A finite cell strain is derived from canine fetal lung tissue, the cells of which are fibroblast-like, diploid, and are free of reverse transcriptase and C-type particles. With a nutrient medium the cells provide a cell culture system useful in the cultivation of a number of viruses from which vaccines may be prepared.
Abstract: An improved disc valve in a container for dispensing liquids is disclosed. The disc valve comprises at least two upstanding posts adjacent an outlet passage in the bottom of the container and a floatable disc member with apertures near its periphery through which the posts extend. The posts further have disc-retaining stops at their upper ends. The posts position the disc and the relationship between the size of the apertures and the thickness of the posts assures the disc will seat over the outlet passage to prevent the passage of air when all the liquid has been dispensed.
Abstract: A method for the isolation of albumin which allows the selective adsorption and substantially quantitative elution of albumin from mixtures containing the same. The method comprises contacting a solution which contains albumin with a member of a series of dye-insoluble support compounds in which the insoluble support is a polyhydroxy polymer coupled to a dye by means of a reactive pyrimidine. The albumin which is selectively adsorbed can be readily eluted resulting in essentially a quantitative recovery of pure albumin.
Abstract: A process and apparatus adapted to automate the conversion of a continuous sheet of flexible plastic film into ported bags. The apparatus includes means for maintaining the film sheet in proper alignment during the various processing steps and functions in a manner which reduces environmental particulate contamination of the bags to a minimum.
Abstract: The device is a disposable compact unit comprising a transparent column with an aperture at its base, an air float within the column and with the column mounted on a closed container. A conduit joins the top of the column to an opening into the container. The container is also equipped with a breathing tube and a variable aperture means for varying the size of another opening into the container. By inhaling through the breathing tube, a patient can judge his capacity for alveolar expansion by the height to which the air float rises. Adjustment to any patient's capacity can be easily made by changing the opening in the variable aperture means.
