  • Patent number: 7453212
Abstract: A tungsten alloy feedthrough for ceramic discharge vessels is used to form a hermetic seal with the ceramic body of the discharge vessel. The tungsten alloy comprises tungsten alloyed with a metal selected from titanium, vanadium or a combination thereof. The alloy may be formulated to have a coefficient of thermal expansion that closely matches that of the ceramic to prevent cracking. Preferably, the tungsten alloy contains from about 10 to about 35 wt. % of a metal selected from Ti, V, or a combination thereof.

  • Patent number: 7449129
Abstract: A Sr(Al,Mg)12O19:Ce,Pr phosphor is described wherein the phosphor has an increased sensitivity to excitation by 185 nm radiation compared to a Sr(Al,Mg)12O19:Ce phosphor. The Ce,Pr-coativated strontium magnesium aluminate phosphor emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation at about 306 nm in the UVB region. Suntan lamps made with this phosphor exhibit improved performance over lamps made with a commercial Sr(Al,Mg)12O19:Ce phosphor.

  • Patent number: 7414366
Abstract: A ceramic discharge vessel for a high-intensity discharge lamp includes a hollow body and two capillaries attached to the body. The capillaries have respective electrodes therein, where portions of the electrodes inside the body are spaced from each other and have longitudinal axes that are not coplanar. That is, in contrast to the prior art where the longitudinal axes are coplanar, the capillaries herein are moved (in effect, rotated) to positions in which a first plane defined by a longitudinal axis of one capillary and a first point where a second capillary is attached to the body is intersected by a longitudinal axis of the second capillary only at the first point.

  • Patent number: 7411349
Abstract: A UV radiator has an essentially tubular discharge vessel designed to produce dielectric barrier discharges at one end and sealed in a gas-tight manner at both ends, and in each case at least one elongate inner and outer electrode which is oriented parallel to the longitudinal axis of the discharge vessel. If it is imagined that the tubular part of the discharge vessel is split into two equal halves by an imaginary longitudinal section, the at least one inner electrode is arranged on the inside of the first imaginary tube half, and the at least one outer electrode is arranged on the outside of the second imaginary tube half, and essentially diametrically with respect to one another. As a result, and as a result of the shape and number and arrangement of the outer electrode(s), directional radiation characteristics are achieved.

  • Patent number: 7402955
Abstract: A lamp envelope is provided with an alumina layer and a multilayer phosphor coating on the alumina layer. The phosphor coating includes a top phosphor layer with a first weight percent of rare earth activators and a middle phosphor layer with a second weight percent of rare earth activators. The second weight percent is less than the first weight percent so that a total amount of the activators in the coating is reduced while maintaining a required lamp brightness and color rendering index (CRI). Preferably, the second weight percent is about 50-60% of the first weight percent and the middle layer is about 30-50% of a total weight of the coating so that a total weight of the activators in the coating is no more than about 80% of a weight of the activators in the coating if the first and second weight percents were the same.

  • Patent number: 7396490
Abstract: A UV-emitting, Ce,Pr-coactivated calcium pyrophosphate phosphor is provided wherein the Pr activator increases the phosphor's sensitivity to excitation by 185 nm radiation. The improved sensitivity to the 185 nm radiation allows the phosphor to make better use of the approximate 10% of the UV radiation that is emitted at 185 nm by a low pressure mercury discharge.

  • Patent number: 7362053
Abstract: The present invention is a ceramic discharge vessel for use in high-intensity-discharge (HID) lamps. The discharge vessel has a ceramic body and at least one seal region comprised of an aluminum oxynitride material. The seal region further has a surface layer for contacting a frit material wherein the surface layer is less reactive than the aluminum oxynitride material with respect to the molten frit during sealing. Preferably, the surface layer has a lower nitrogen content than the aluminum oxynitride material. The less reactive surface acts to minimize the formation of bubbles in the sealing frit during the sealing operation.
