    Abstract: The invention relates to a novel alloy consisting essentially of 13-18% nickel, 7-11% aluminum, 0.5 to 10% cobalt, 0.1 to 2% silicon and the remainder substantially all iron, as is produced by heating the alloy composition to a temperature of about 1650.degree. C. or above to form a melt and then casting the melt in a suitable mold. After solidification, the casting is heated to approximately 1150.degree. C., held at that temperature for a sufficient time to insure that the whole mass is heated uniformly, and then cooled at the rate of about 300.degree. C. per minute. Parts are then given an aging for the purpose of producing uniform magnetic properties throughout the casting. Magnets thus cast, heat-treated and aged as aforesaid produce very stable magnetic properties with typical values of Br = 10,000, Hc = 150 and BH max = .85.A further improvement in properties can be achieved by a second stage heat treatment wherein castings are heated to about 900.degree. C.

    Abstract: An assembly for drilling a hole in a roof to a greater depth than the height of the chamber therebelow includes a starter-driver bar having a first end adapted to be driven by a motor and a second end having a female socket therein, a rod extension including a male end shaped to be received in said female socket and a female socket at its other end of the same cross-sectional size and shape as the first named female socket, and a bit having a male shank of the same cross-sectional shape as said male end. A starter hole is first drilled using the starter-driver with the drill bit in its top and a motor connected to its lower end. Drilling then is continued with an assembly consisting of a first rod extension between the bit and starter-driver. Additional rod extensions are inserted between the starter-driver and the bottom rod extension until a hole of the desired depth is obtained.

    Abstract: A process for preparing metal having a substantially uniform dispersion of hard filler particles. The process includes the steps of: admixing metal powder and oxide particles having a negative free energy of formation at 1000.degree. C of at least as great as that of aluminum oxide; and of milling the mixture for a period of time sufficient to effect a substantially uniform dispersion of said oxide particles in said metallic powder. Milling is performed in an atmosphere containing sufficient oxygen to substantially preclude welding of particles of said metallic powder to other such particles. After milling, the dispersion strengthened powder is heat treated to remove excess oxygen therefrom.

    Abstract: An austenitic stainless steel alloy which has extremely good pitting resistance and at the same time has good hot-workability characteristics. The alloy contains, as essential constituents, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, calcium and cerium. In achieving the desirable characteristics of the invention, the molybdenum and chromium levels are important in determining pitting resistance; while recoveries of cerium and calcium in the final alloy are important in determining the hot-workability of the alloy, although cerium is the more important of the two. Sulfur levels are preferably maintained low, on the order of 0.006% or less.Also disclosed is a method for making an alloy of the type described above wherein the finishing temperature of hot-rolled strip is maintained around or above 1800.degree. F to reduce edge cracking and preferably is maintained at about 2000.degree. F.

    Abstract: Apparatus for connecting motors in tandem and particularly in vertical alignment includes a coupling for connecting the lower end of the shaft of the upper motor to the upper end of the shaft of the lower motor. A tubular member surrounds the coupling with its upper end extending into the outer housing of the upper motor and its lower end threaded into the outer housing of the lower motor. A lock ring surrounds the tubular member and has a keyed connection with the outer housing of the lower motor. The upper end of the lock ring and the lower end of the outer housing preferably have ten equally spaced keyways therein. A key extends into a pair of matching keyways of the lock ring and upper outer housing and screws hold the keys in place by passing through aligned holes in the lock ring and upper outer housing into threaded holes in the tubular member.

    Abstract: Apparatus for underground drilling includes a housing having a bottomed opening in its top and a hole extending downwardly through the housing from the opening. A rotatable chuck is received in the opening and has a vertical bore therethrough with non-circular upper portion for receiving a hollow drill rod, an intermediate portion and an enlarged lower portion having a shoulder at the top thereof. A compressible plug is closely received in the vertical bore and has an enlarged bottom portion with its top bearing against the shoulder and its bottom bearing against the bottom of the chuck bore. The plug has a frusto-conical upper portion which is compressed by the bottom of the hollow drill rod. A hollow adapter is received in the hole in the housing in spaced relationship with the chuck and has sealing engagement with the hole wall.
