Abstract: A method of processing a user interface component is provided and includes receiving one or more user interface components that can be communicated to a wireless device. A component risk level for each of the one or more user interface components is determined and assigned to each of the one or more user interface components. Each of the one or more user interface components can be digitally signed using an embedded risk code that indicates the assigned risk level. Further, the component risk level can be selected from a plurality of component risk levels. In a particular embodiment, the component risk level can be determined based on the type of the user interface component. Further, the component risk level can be determined based on a developer of the user interface component.

Abstract: A method of providing an alert of an incoming communication is disclosed and includes receiving an incoming communication at a wireless device and determining whether the wireless device has access to a photograph that is associated with an identified source of the incoming communication. Further, the method includes displaying the photograph and an alert message that is associated with the incoming communication.

Abstract: Described are techniques and mechanisms for media data storage management. Briefly stated, a media control component monitors the usage patterns of media files on a local device. Any media files whose usage pattern falls below a given threshold is identified as a trim candidate. The media control component trims those trim candidates by eliminating data (content) from the media files. The data is eliminated from the latter portion of the media file so that the trimmed media file will continue to render properly when initially launched. If the trimmed media file is launched, the media control component retrieves the eliminated data from a content server on which is stored a library of media files.

Abstract: A method of communication is disclosed and includes attempting to establish a connection with a destination wireless device. The method also includes determining that the destination wireless device does not include required software. Additionally, the method includes transmitting an indication to the destination wireless device that required software is necessary to establish the connection. Further, the method includes transmitting an indication to the destination wireless device that the originating wireless device is authorized with respect to a one-time download of the required software. The method also includes transmitting a request to a download server to download the required software to the destination wireless device.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing an application credential for an application running on a device. In one embodiment, a method provides an application credential to an application running on a device, wherein the application credential is used by the application to authenticate to a data server. The method comprises receiving a request to generate the application credential, wherein the request includes an application identifier. The method also comprises generating the application credential using the application identifier and a master credential associated with the device.

Abstract: A system and method of instant messaging is disclosed and includes transmitting an indication from a wireless device to an instant messaging server that instant messaging is enabled at the wireless device. Further, a plurality of communication signals between the wireless device and a plurality of base stations are monitored. After determining that the wireless device has one remaining communication signal with one base station, the one remaining communication signal is monitored. Moreover, a time history of signal strength data for the one remaining communication signal is recorded and a slope of the signal strength data is determined. Based on the slope of the signal strength data, it can be determined whether an imminent loss of signal is about to occur at the wireless device.

Abstract: A navigation device receives a destination location to automatically calculate a route to the destination location over a wireless network. The destination location may be generated by a third party at a remote computer or wireless device. The destination location may be entered into the remote computer or wireless device, or may be automatically generated by the device. The destination location is transmitted from the remote computer or wireless device to the navigation device. Once received, the user of the navigation device may have the option of accepting or rejecting the destination location. The navigation device then uses the destination location to calculate a route which is communicated to the user with minimal to no user interaction. Multiple destinations may be sent to the navigation device, thus allowing advanced programming of an entire trip.

Abstract: Described are various methods and apparatuses that provide for variants for multiple resource types and efficiently managing these resources by use of common variables and an organized file structure. A file structure is organize by a common variables, such as the $lang variable, and includes resource references such that once the common variable is defined, similar resources can be referenced using the same instruction by the use of modifying the common variable. Multiple resource types, including text, images as well as other resource types may be managed using the file structure disclosed herein.

Abstract: Resources to a device are granted access to an application based on privileges associated with the application. A permission list may be created by a server. The permission list may be created using information from authorities, entities, or parties and information about the device resources. The permission list indicates what device resources the application may access. During application execution when the application requests a resource, a control program executing on the device may be used to check the permission list associated with the application to determine if the application may access the resource. The control program can then grant or deny access based on the privileges defined in the permission list. Digital signatures may be used to detect modifications to the application and/or permission list. In addition, multiple permission lists may be associated with the same application.

Abstract: Network-initiated uninstallation of programs on remote modules, such as wireless telephones, is performed over a wireless network to recall programs stored on the wireless telephone that are faulty or harmful to the wireless telephone, the wireless network, or a user of the wireless telephone. If one or more recall criteria are met for uninstallation of a targeted application program, a recall command source constructs a recall command. A program manager, using a database containing information about each program downloaded onto each wireless telephone in the network, identifies, for the recall command source, which wireless telephones carry the targeted application program. The recall command includes a unique application identification for the targeted application program and an instruction to the wireless telephone to uninstall the targeted application program. The recall command is broadcast over the wireless network to the wireless telephones.

Abstract: Described are various methods and apparatuses for fine grained control of z-order elements in a presentation. A structure is defined containing user interface elements and an order is defined for rendering such user interface elements. It is desired that some elements may need to be rendered out of the defined order, therefore a raise user interface element is defined allowing for one or more user interface elements to be defined to be rendered out of the normally defined order. User interface elements may something to be presented on a display and may also include program code for defining behaviors.

Abstract: An electronic tool and method to manage a battery includes a processor to monitor a battery charge and estimate a required charge needed by the electronic tool to complete any task or job shift. When the processor determines the battery charge is insufficient, the processor applies business rules to reduce and terminate functions of the electronic tool to conserve power.

Abstract: Graphic User Interface for Data Processing Device A handheld data processing device (82) has a touch-sensitive display screen (84) and interface means for generating a graphic user interface (GUI) on the screen, the GUI having one or more image elements (88, 92, 94, 96, 98, 100, 102), each representing an input. The screen (84) generates a control signal corresponding to an input in response to a portion of the screen on which an image element (88, 92, 94, 96, 98, 100, 102) representing said input is displayed being touched by a user of the device. The device has processing means for processing the control signal. The interface means is operable to locate the image elements (88, 92, 94, 96, 98, 100, 102) on an accessible portion of the screen (84) so that in use the image elements are within reach of a digit (90) of a hand in which the device is held. The image elements may, for example, be located in a fan in a corner of the screen, or in linear fashion along the edges of the screen.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of providing content to a mobile terminal includes receiving data at the mobile terminal, classifying the content data in accordance with classification data included within the content data, storing the content data within the mobile terminal, creating an access object whereby the content data may be accessed, find associating the access object with further access objects having similar classification codes. This has a significant effect in simplifying the provision of content to mobile terminals.

Abstract: A system, method, and program for remotely interacting with a diagnostic interface resident on wireless computer devices. The wireless device provides an accessible diagnostic interface that allows reads and/or writes to device resident diagnostic data and tools. Through use of the interaction, wireless device status data and network status data can be gathered and utilized, and if so embodied, the diagnostic tools resident on the wireless devices can be manipulated to alter wireless device operation.

Abstract: System for dynamic arbitration of a shared resource on a device. A method is provided for arbitrating the allocation of a device resource on a device. The method comprises receiving a request from a requesting application that requests allocation of the device resource, and determining that the device resource is owned by an owning application. The method also comprises associating owner information with requester information to form an arbitration request, wherein the owner information comprises information about the owning application and the requester information comprises information about the requesting application. The method also comprises arbitrating the arbitration request to produce an arbitration decision that indicates whether or not the device resource should be allocated to the requesting application, and allocating the device resource based on the arbitration decision.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for enabling fast set up for push-to-talk (PT) communications in a wireless communication network. PTT set up related messages are identified through a specially designated header and the messages with the special designated header are transmitted through signaling channels from a radio transmission unit to a mobile device.

Abstract: A system, method, and computer program for billing wireless device subscribers based upon billable interaction with applications and services resident on third party computer devices that are accessible through a wireless network. The system uses authenticatable transaction data that is created when a wireless device conducts a billable transaction whereby the data is a secure indication that a wireless device has performed a specific billable transaction event. The transaction data can be authenticated and then aggregated to generate billing for billable transaction events that occur on the wireless network. The billing can occur from a billing computer on the network or the aggregated data can be sent to a wireless service provider for ultimate billing to the wireless device subscriber.

Abstract: A system and method for downloading graphical images to a display device from a server through a wireless communications network within a predetermined time interval. In one embodiment, a docking station for a wireless device is provided with a connector for connecting the display device, and docking station provides a dial tone to the display device within the predetermined time interval and requests connection to the server through the wireless device. The docking station will not provide the dial tone outside of the predetermined time interval.
