  • Patent number: 4123905
Abstract: A high torque ratio hydraulic torque converter having impeller, turbine and stator elements in which the stator is assembled to the housing of the converter and secured in place by drilling and driving of locking pins and in which a flow path is defined within the converter by means of an annular sheet metal guide ring. The guide ring is secured in place by means of drilling and driving a locking pin at the outer annular edge of the guide ring, the guide ring being in contact with the sealing member in the housing to define fluid entry and fluid exit chambers for the hydraulic converter between the guide ring and the fixed housing. Further, the turbine member includes a steel hub which is cast within the center of the turbine having means to provide for translation of force in both rotary and axial directions between the cast material and the steel hub.

  • Patent number: 4117918
Abstract: A speed-responsive engaging mechanism adapted for use in a hydrodynamic device to couple turbine and impeller members including a disc secured to the turbine member having a series of cam surfaces thereon formed in apertures in the discs with a series of friction shoe assemblies mounted in the apertures in engagement with the cam surfaces. The friction shoe assemblies engage with the impeller at a predetermined speed of rotation of the turbine member, and the cam means induces a wedging engagement of the shoes with the impeller member. Spring means are provided to retain the shoe assemblies in the apertures, and a roller mechanism may be provided in each shoe assembly to provide relatively frictionless relative movement between the cam surfaces and the shoe assemblies. Means are provided between the roller and cam to limit the amount of torque which can be developed by the wedging action of the cam and roller mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4106368
Abstract: A control system used to change the gear ratio in a gear set regulated by a signal from an electronic control unit is disclosed. A transducer provides an output torque signal which is compared to other signals for controlling the gear change. The ratio change is accomplished through a friction element engaged by hydraulic pressure. A unique diaphragm and solenoid control valve is used responsive to the electronic control unit to follow a shift control ramp to insure a smooth shift.

  • Patent number: 4066157
Abstract: A clutch and brake device for the impeller of a hydrodynamic device in which the clutch is engaged by selectively admitting pressure from a source of pressure to a clutch servomotor, this pressure being conducted to a release chamber for the brake servomotor to automatically release the brake, thus insuring proper timing of release of the brake and engagement of the clutch. The brake is applied by the charge pressure within the hydraulic torque converter which is applied to the opposite side of the piston for the brake with respect to the pressure from the source of pressure. Thus, when the pressure from the source of pressure is exhausted releasing the clutch, the charge pressure of the converter will automatically engage the brake. The charge pressure is also conducted to the release side of the piston for the clutch device, thus insuring the clutch will be fully released when the brake is engaged.
