  • Patent number: 6588116
Abstract: A method of drilling under barriers (rivers, highways and the like) is set out. The horizontal drilling system mounts a guidance tool on the end of the drill string just behind the drill bit. The guidance tool includes a pair of right angle accelero meters and a 3-axis mounted gyro. The gyro furnishes data in a plane at right angles to the z-axis. This defines four data streams to the CPU enabling determination of drill bit location and pathway.

  • Patent number: 6511850
Abstract: A self-adjusting, free-flowing pneumatic nebulizer interface is described for coupling fluid phase separation apparatus such as capillary electrophoresis apparatus or fluid-phase analyte delivery apparatus such as flow-injection analysis apparatus to gas phase, post-separation detection apparatus such as mass spectrometers, chemiluminescence detectors, or other similar gas phase detection apparatus. The interface combines the analytes with only the needed amount of sheath fluid to produce a combined flow whose magnitude automatically matches the self-aspiration rate of the pneumatic nebulizer interface, and which is combined with a gas flow to produce an aerosol. The resulting aerosol can then be either deposited directly on a surface, forwarded directly to a detection system or forwarded first to a conversion apparatus such as an oxidizer and the oxidized sample components are then forwarded to a detector.

  • Patent number: 6508189
Abstract: A non-permeable bladder is used for transporting oil within a steel compartment onboard an oil tanker. The bladder is contained within a meso-skeleton suspended within the individual metal tank which causes any force which would otherwise puncture the bladder, to be spread evenly over the exterior of the bladder and causes the fluid within the bladder to be expelled through a check valve into one or more smaller containers which can either be maintained onboard the oil tanker or forced into the water through which the tanker had been moving. To provide resistance against terrorism or other acts of war, the upper deck of the tanker has a laminated structure, starting with the upper surface of the tanker down to the bladder, of a layer of steel, a layer of Kevlar, a layer of sodium bicarbonate powder, a second layer of Kevlar, a second layer of steel and then the bladder.

  • Patent number: 6482272
Abstract: A method is disclosed for prevention nitridation or carburization of metal surfaces in contact with a fluid including nitriding agents or carburizing agents where the method involves adding to the fluid an effective amount a sulfur-containing compound and a phosphorus compound, where the amount of phosphorus-containing compound is less than the amount of sulfur-containing compound. The simultaneous addition of both a sulfur compound and a phosphorus compound prevents nitridation and/or carburization and sulfidation of the metal surfaces in contact with fluids containing nitriding and/or carburizing agents significantly increasing the metal's lifetime.

  • Patent number: 6469918
Abstract: A cathodic corrosion inhibiting apparatus is disclosed which is characterized by outputting a substantially square-wave rectified output from a AC input. The square-wave rectified output has a substantially constant DC component and a minimal AC component which allows the output to minimize large oscillations in electromotive potential about a DC mean associated with traditional rectified cathodic protection apparatus. The apparatus of this invention is also designed to be remotely monitored and controlled and can include self-monitoring and control circuitry to maintain a given degree of corrosion protection to a metallic apparatus.

  • Patent number: 6458328
Abstract: A more efficient combustion or oxidation device for the formation of nitrogen, phosphorus and/or sulfur oxides from a sample containing these elemental constituents is disclosed. The device uses multi-staged addition of an oxidizing agent to enhance oxidation and liberation of nitrogen, phosphorus and/or sulfur oxides for subsequent detection. The oxidation devices of the present invention allow for the injection of larger samples or, the introduction of a greater amount of sample per unit of time which results in a larger amount of analyte being delivered to the detector per unit of time, thereby improving detection limits and detection efficiency.

  • Patent number: 6386290
Abstract: The disclosure describes a spoolable compliant guide, a system including a spoolable compliant guide and injector and methods for using the compliant guide, where the guide is designed to connect at one end to the injector and at its other end to a remote installation having a seal and to allow coiled tubing to be inserted into the installation through the seal. Because the guide permits a substantial distance to exist between the injector and the installation seal and functions as a crimp or band resistor for the coiled tubing, the guide enables the injector to be conveniently positioned remote from the installation such as a wellhead and assumes a compliant shape between the injector and the installation allowing dynamic relative movement between them without the use of heave compensators. Thus, for subsea installations, the injector, its control system and coiled tubing reels can all be located on the water's surface for ease of access and maintenance.

  • Patent number: 6255359
Abstract: The present invention involves compositions having variable permeation and/or porosity and objects made therefrom. The compositions are prepared by dispersing a pore-forming agent in a polymer matrix by agitation. The composition is density developed resulting in a variable concentration in pore-forming agent throughout the mixture through application of an external force on the mixture with or without continued agitation. The pore-forming agent is then leached from the mixture to form a polymer matrix having variable permeability and/or porosity.
