Patent number: 4070026Abstract: A game is provided with a map board subdivided into a plurality of territorial entities such as geographical or political entities, such as the states of the United States of America. Each state is assigned a value corresponding to, for example, its population. A grid of recesses is provided on the top surface of the game board which allows for the movement of game pieces therealong. The grid of recesses is formed into a plurality of vertical rows and a plurality of horizontal rows, and the game pieces move therealong a distance equal to a number shown by a first-game-piece control member, such as an eight-sided die, while the direction of movement of the game pieces along the grid of recesses is also determined by a game-piece control member, such as a second eight-sided die which has a plurality of directions indicated on the surfaces thereof. A state is claimed by any player whose game piece lands in a recess within the boundary of the state.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1976Date of Patent: January 24, 1978Inventor: Nicholas A. Cambardella

Patent number: 4043743Abstract: A combustion control system is operated based on the detection of smoke density. A photoelectric device measures the intensity of light directed through the smoke by a lamp in order to measure the smoke density. This measurement is employed to control fuel and/or air supply or the like. To provide a standard reference, light is directed from the lamp through an alternate path not affected by the smoke to the photoelectric device. A shutter mechanism alternately exposes the photoelectric device to light passing through or circumventing the smoke. The photoelectric measurement is compared with a standard and the comparison is used to adjust circuitry connected to the photoelectric device to stabilize the effects of the latter. A continuous monitoring of the adjustment is carried out to determine when an acceptable range of adjustment has been exceeded. A smoke density amplifier is employed to increase effectiveness.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1976Date of Patent: August 23, 1977Assignee: B.S.C. Industries CorporationInventor: Seymour Seider

Patent number: 4038702Abstract: A method of improving the operation of metal heart valves according to which the surfaces of the heart valves are treated to render more negative the electrochemical potential which the valve part will exhibit in blood or a blood-like fluid and to minimize surface non-homogenities. The surface is treated to obtain more particularly a negative surface potential which is generally homogeneous and more negative than + 100 mv/NHE by chemical polishing, electrochemical polishing or cathode cleaning.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1973Date of Patent: August 2, 1977Inventor: Philip Nicholas Sawyer

Patent number: 4037583Abstract: A solar heating system is provided in which is employed a source of a heatable fluid and an arrangement of solar heating panels to receive heat from the sun and heat the fluid therewith. A heat sink is provided to receive the fluid from the solar panels and to store heat received with the fluid. A heat transfer arrangement transfers heat from the heat sink to a heating system medium. The heat sink includes a tank which is connected in a closed loop with the solar heating panels to receive heatablefluid from the panels. Aggregate is provided in the tank to store heat received via the heatable fluid. The heat transfer arrangement includes a duct for the passage of air and rocks arranged in the duct for storing heat received from the tank. In one construction, the panels each comprise an array of tubes of a heat conductive material and a heatable mass in which the array is located and heated in order to heat fluid flowing through the tubes.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1975Date of Patent: July 26, 1977Inventors: Paul Bakun, Clifford Porter

Patent number: 4027392Abstract: An endosteal tooth in one form is made of an electrically conductive material and is provided with an implant (e.g., lower) socket portion and a removably mounted crown (e.g., upper) portion which houses therein a source of electrical current for the implant socket portion. By supplying electrical current or voltage to the implant socket portion, which is embedded in bone in the region of the implantation, the growth of bone is induced and the prevention of infection provided. The rate of growth of the bone and the type of bone growth can be controlled by the amount of current supplied to the implant socket portion. In one embodiment of the invention, the source of electrical current is housed in the crown portion of the tooth which is replaced with a final crown after the growth of bone has been completed. In another form of the invention, the source of electrical current is supplied externally of the tooth.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1976Date of Patent: June 7, 1977Assignee: Interface Biomedical Laboratories CorporationInventors: Philip Nicholas Sawyer, Boguslaw Stanczewski

Patent number: 4027461Abstract: An elongated central shaft is provided at one end with a hook for supporting thereon a hanger for a garment. The other end of the central elongated shaft is connected to a mounting element which mounts the arrangement on an apparatus for bagging garments. The elongated shaft has mounted thereabout a compressible spreader unit which is hinged at its ends so that, as a bag is pulled down from an apparatus for bagging garments, the spreader unit positioned about the central elongated shaft will cause the bag to open and avoid contact with the hook and the central elongated shaft.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1976Date of Patent: June 7, 1977Assignee: U.S. Dynamics CorporationInventors: Murray Jelling, Alexander Kahn, Ernest George Moore, Michael Friedman

Patent number: 4014047Abstract: A face mask comprising an elongated sheet of porous material having upper and lower longitudinal edges and transverse side edges. A line of stitches of elastic material is sewn to the material along both its side edges, and a length of elastic cord at each side edge is secured to the material by interweaving with the line of stitches thereat. A free intermediate portion of the elastic cord is formed between the ends at which the cord is interwoven with the stitches to the porous material, and the free intermediate portion forms an ear loop. The elastic material is sewn to the porous material and interwoven with the cord lengths while the porous material is taut so that when the porous material is relaxed, the elastic material exerts a pull on the porous material to gather and contract the material at the side edges.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1975Date of Patent: March 29, 1977Inventor: James W. Patent number: 4011947Abstract: A prosthetic device is packaged for surgical use by detachably coupling a support to the device, cleaning substantially all of the foreign material from the device, and encapsulating the thusly cleaned device in an openable capsule with the support extending therethrough. The encapsulated device and support attached thereto are further encased in a bag or other like protective device and this packaged assembly is further encased in a box. Sterilization of the whole is effected by means of radiation. In use, the bagged device is subsequently removed from the box and delivered to an operating room or other antiseptic environment whereat the bag is removed and the device handled by means of the support attached thereto. A solution containing, for example, heparin and an antibiotic is injected into the capsule for treating the prosthetic device. Afterwards, the capsule is opened and the prosthetic device is juxtaposed to an installation zone by means of the support.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1975Date of Patent: March 15, 1977Inventor: Philip Nicholas Sawyer

Patent number: RE29347Abstract: A measuring and dispensing device includes a cylinder divided by radial vanes into a plurality of passages. At the top of the cylinder is arranged a disc segment which is capable of closing off a plurality of the aforesaid passages. A disc segment is also arranged at the bottom of the cylinder to close off a greater number of the passages. The upper disc segment is staggered relative to the lower disc segment with which it overlaps so that no clear and direct passage is afforded through any of the passages in the cylinder. A bin of material such as rice, flour, metal parts or the like is superposed over the cylinder. The aforesaid disc segments are driven by a manually operated spring loaded belt such that the belt can be displaced for the discharge of a selectable number of passages. Upon displacement of the belt, a spring is loaded to return the belt for driving the disc segments.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1976Date of Patent: August 9, 1977Inventor: Louis T. Friedman
