  • Patent number: 6354612
Abstract: In a shopping cart, in which a basket is supported by a chassis, a tray is hinged within the basket so as to enable the tray to be selectively positionable in a generally horizontal, usage position or in a generally vertical, storage position. In a preferred embodiment, a hinge wire is located at what becomes an upper end of each hinge aperture in the storage position, in which the tray does not extend above the front wall of the basket. The tray is arranged so that it is necessary to move the tray so as to space the upper end of each hinge aperture from the hinge wire sufficiently to avoid interference between the tray and the front wall of the basket when repositioning the tray from the storage position into the usage position. Each side wall of the basket has a support projecting into the basket and adapted to engage the tray with the tray resting on the supports so as to stabilize the tray when positioned in the usage position.

  • Patent number: 6356467
Abstract: A system and method for generating an AC power output signal from a DC power input signal. The system incorporates a DC-to-DC boost regulator including a plurality of boost stages coupled in series for receiving a DC input signal and producing a boosted DC power signal. The system further incorporates a DC-to-AC converter coupled to the transformerless DC-to-DC boost regulator, for receiving the boosted DC power signal and generating an AC power output signal. A control element is coupled to both the DC-to-DC boost regulator and the DC-to-AC converter. In at least one embodiment, the system and method for generating an AC power output signal from a DC power input signal are used in connection with an uninterruptible power supply.

  • Patent number: 6353395
Abstract: A low power local alarm indicating system for interconnectable detectors enables a viewer to, after the fact, determine which detector or detectors had previously gone into a local alarm. An alarm latch, such as a bistable multi-vibrator circuit, is set each time the respective detector goes into a local alarm. Subsequently, if the detector's test switch is activated, a local alarm visual indicator is provided. In a disclosed embodiment, the indication is provided by blinking a light emitting diode on the detector, for a predetermined interval. Where multiple detectors are interconnected, each detector that goes into alarm not only sets its local alarm latch and emits a local alarm, it also generates an interconnect alarm signal to the remaining interconnected detectors. The interconnected detectors go into alarm at least for as long as the interconnect signal is present.

  • Patent number: 6349721
Abstract: A breathing mask worn by a firefighter or by another wearer in a hazardous environment exposing the wearer potentially to heat and/or flame as well as to smoke and/or other chemical and/or biological agents is provided with an air filter, which is contained in a canister having an air inlet or air inlets and being connected to the breathing mask via a conduit, and with a protective cover for the conduit and for the canister. The protective cover comprises a fabric shell, which covers the conduit, essentially as far as the breathing mask, and which covers the canister, except that the fabric shell has an air inlet or air inlets communicating with the air inlet or air inlets of the canister. The fabric shell is made from a heat-resistant, flame-resistant fabric, preferably an aluminized fabric, such as an aluminized knit comprising approximately 33% polybenzimidazole fibers and approximately 67% polyparaphenylene terephthalamide fibers.

  • Patent number: 6349694
Abstract: A reciprocating mechanism for use in an engine comprises a reciprocating member which is movable in a substantially linear reciprocating direction between two ends of travel, a piston provided on the reciprocating member, and a constant breadth cam and follower, the follower being coupled directly to the reciprocating member to translate linear movement of the reciprocating member into rotary motion of the cam, and the mechanism being such that movement of the reciprocating member at the two ends of its travel is reversed in dependence upon the rotation of the cam, the follower lying below and to the side of the piston bore and the piston being rigidly mounted to the reciprocating member.

  • Patent number: 6347545
Abstract: A bottle closure testing apparatus includes a plurality of testing modules mounted side by side on a base plate. Each testing module includes a base block having a pressure input, a pressure signal output, and a holder for a test vessel. The test vessel is a plastic bottle blow-molding preform having a bottle finish and a pressure entry port. A preform is mounted to each of the modules with the pressure entry port in fluid communication with one of the pressure inputs. A closure is screwed onto each of the preforms and the preforms are pressurized to a preselected test pressure via the module. The pressure within the preforms can be monitored by pressure gauges at the signal outputs, or by transducers at the signal outputs which communicate a pressure signal to remote monitoring equipment.

  • Patent number: 6341721
Abstract: A self-sealing, dispensing closure comprises a shell, a cover moveable axially toward and away from the shell, and a valve connected to the cover via a stem, and adapted to close the outlet when the cover is moved away from the shell and to open the outlet when the cover is moved toward the shell. The shell has a generally conical surface. The cover has a resilient skirt, which is discontinuous. The skirt engages the surface to bias the cover away from the shell and to bias the valve toward the closing position but to permit the cover to move toward the shell and to permit the valve to move away from the closing position. The shell and the cover have formations coactive to prevent the cover from being moved toward the shell and the valve from being moved away from the closing position at certain but not all positions of relative rotation of the shell and the cover.
