  • Patent number: 7266086
Abstract: A method for transmitting data packets between a transmitter and a receiver unit in a communication system is described. For transmitting data packets a transmission mode is selected from a plurality of available transmission modes and an automatic repeat request for retransmission is used. Therefore for each available transmission mode a channel parameter based on link quality is calculated and a transmission capacity parameter is determinated. The state of the automatic repeat request control window for at least one transceiver is identified. For each available transmission mode an estimation of the user quality value based on the channel parameter, the transmission capacity parameter and the state of the automatic repeat request control window from at least one transceiver is estimated. The transmission mode that provides the best user quality value is selected.

  • Patent number: 7254765
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for transmitting error-tolerant data is disclosed employing the ARQ technique, wherein the retransmission of erroneous data is performed up to the point where the remaining amount of errors is acceptable (for instance because the erorrs will not be perceived by the recipient of the information, which can be a person or a higher level protocol with additional error correction capabilities). The number of data blocks (RLC) detected as erroneous is employed to define a reliability measure (RM) and a request for retransmission of the erroneous data blocks is performed until a desired reliability threshold (RT) is reached. An additional threshold with a higher value than the first one can be employed to request for optional retransmission when the reliability measure (RM) is between the first and the second threshold. The retransmission will be performed only if further conditions such as channel availability are met.

  • Patent number: 7251271
Abstract: Method and apparatus for designing digital filters are provided. One method includes the steps of determining a real-valued discrete-frequency representation of a desired digital filter and transforming this discrete-frequency representation into a corresponding discrete-time representation. The discrete-time representation is circularly shifted and a window is applied to the discrete time representation to produce a zero-padded reduced length filter. Thereafter input signal x[n] is convolved with the reduced length filter.

  • Patent number: 7245922
Abstract: A method and apparatus provides for control of the quality of service for service groups by controlling the power of each service group. The carrier-to-interference requirements for which each service group achieves its minimum acceptable link quality is determined. The difference in carrier-to-interference requirements due to different requirements of fractions of satisfied users is compensated for. A power offset between the service group is determined using the compensated carrier-to-interference requirements.

  • Patent number: 7245360
Abstract: When an optical fiber (1, 1?) is heated by an electrical discharge generated between electrodes (3) thermal light emission from the core and cladding of fiber forms a hot image which can be observed by an optical imaging system (9, 15, 17). Since the concentration of dopants in the core is significantly higher than in the cladding, the light emitted from the core gives a peak structure in the light intensity profile of a hot image. The peak width of the core image increases significantly when dopants diffuse out of the core such as in heating the fiber. The increase of peak width is found to be highly correlated to the expansion of the mode field diameter (MFD) of fiber. This correlation can be experimentally determined at well-defined fusion conditions for any given type of fiber and thereby used to give a measure of the MFD by observing the peak width in hot images. Measures of MFD can be used for improving the quality of estimation of losses in splices of optical fibers.

  • Patent number: 7218952
Abstract: A method, system and apparatus in a wireless communications system selectively utilizes the Internet for the transmission of information. In a first embodiment, a subscriber can activate an Internet call forwarding (ICF) supplementary service (SS). From the subscriber's Mobile Station, an ICF message is transmitted to and stored in the subscriber's Home Location Register (HLR). The ICF message may optionally designate an Internet protocol (IP) address destination and may optionally activate other features pursuant to the data type received. For example, the ICF message may request that only fax/data calls or only calls that would otherwise incur a long distance charge be forwarded over/through the Internet. In operation, an incoming call to a Gateway Mobile Services Switching Center (GMSC) causes the GMSC to interrogate the called party's HLR. The information in the incoming call is then forwarded either over/through the Internet or over the PSTN based on the features activated by the ICF message.

  • Patent number: 7218893
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method to identify one or more interference sources in a mobile radio system, preferably in a GSM radio network for mobile telephones. A received signal (r) consists of a wanted signal and a number of interference signals of which one is a dominating interference signal and where all signals includes a known training sequence (TK1,TK2, . . . ). The carrier is estimated and subtracted from the received signal (r) giving a remaining interference signal (s).This signal is correlated against known training sequences (TKj, j=0,1,2, . . . ,7) resulting in a training sequence associated with the interfering signal. According to the invention, the identification code (BCC) of a possible interference source (BS1) from said training sequence is determined. After that, a number of candidates (CA1,CA2, ), each corresponding with a certain cell from the identification code (BCC) are determined and also the frequency which is disturbed and the timing offset (t1,t2, . . . • Patent number: 7206324
Abstract: When UMTS is part of IP end-to-end communication, there must exist means for UMTS to be able to provide the required Quality of Service (QoS) for applications running over IP. Hence there is a need for a translation function for translation between IP QoS parameters and UMTS QoS attributes. This translation is not trivial because of several reasons. First, the number of QoS parameters in the IP level and the UMTS level are different. Second, definitions of parameters at the two levels are different. Keeping these factors in view, the present invention provides for a method for translation of IP QoS parameters to UMTS QoS attributes, and another method for translation of UMTS QoS attributes to IP QoS parameters. This translation will enable spectrum efficient UMTS bearers to be set up for applications running over IP. This will also make negotiation of services possible between an entity at the IP level and the UMTS network.

  • Patent number: 7200768
Abstract: A transmission arrangement and method permits time-sensitive data to be transmitted through a packet-switched network and arrive synchronously at separate end points without synchronising all payload carrying nodes in the network. This is achieved by propagating a timing reference through the network from the sending node to the end nodes, each end node adjusting that phase of its local frequency generator to this timing reference. The sending node then sends data structure information to the end nodes, enabling the end nodes to regenerate the timing and structure of the synchronous data stream. Finally delay information is sent to each end node that allows the end nodes to adjust the start of synchronous data transmission by an amount such that all will commence transmission substantially simultaneously. With this information the end nodes independently recreate a signal in synchronisation.

  • Patent number: 7198050
Abstract: A handheld device for sculpting hair includes a pliable member having a substantially smooth bottom surface. A plurality of spaced-apart bores are disposed in the bottom surface. When the handheld device is placed against a person's head, the pliable member at least partially deforms to conform to the shape of the person's head. By repeatedly pulling the bottom surface of the pliable member across the hair tangentially to the surface of the person's scalp, the plurality of spaced-apart bores disposed in the bottom surface cause clumps of hair to be formed at substantially regular intervals that are a function of the distance between ones of the spaced-apart bores.

  • Patent number: 7187646
Abstract: The present invention relates to a link quality determination unit (LQ-DET) for determining a link quality (LQ) of a transmission link (TL) between an OFDM transmitter (TR) and an OFDM receiver (RC) of an OFDM transmission system (SYS). A first link quality measure determination unit (Q1-DET) determines a first link quality measure (Q1) on the basis of a signal power variation or a signal-to-noise variation determined by a variation determination unit (VS-DET). A second link quality determination unit (Q2-DET) calculates a second link quality measure (Q2) on the basis of an average signal-to-noise ratio based on the noise power (Pz) and the signal power (Ps). To perform a link adaptation (LA) an overall link quality determination unit (Q-DET) combines the first and second link quality measures (Q1, Q2) into an overall link quality measure (Q).

  • Patent number: 7171211
Abstract: The number of measurements being performed in a telecommunications system can be reduced by performing a predetermined measurement in Cell A and in co-located Cell B, step 1, for example a received signal code power (RSCP) measurement. The difference between the two signals is determined, and stored for future reference, step 3. Once the difference value has been established, the mobile station no longer needs to perform measurements on both Cell A and Cell B. Instead, if a subsequent measurement is made on Cell A, step 5, the network can estimate the measurement for Cell B based on the difference signal previously determined, step 7.

  • Patent number: 7155191
Abstract: A method and an arrangment for reducing phase jumps in a frame synchronization signal when switching between synchronization signal when switching between synchronization reference sources are disclosed. A new reference signal to which each of the two reference sources (signals) are phase locked, and has frequency n times the respective reference signal, is generated. A selection signal selects the new reference signal to be used, and the selected one is then divided back to its original frequency creating an input signal to a phase-locked loop generating the resulting frame synchronization signal. In this way, the maximum phase jumps are reduced from one period of the original reference signals to one period of the new reference signal. The invention is particularly applicable for reducing phase jumps on a master frame synchronization signal in a PDH system.
