Abstract: In an alternate eye 3-D motion picture projection apparatus of the rolling loop type, light projection is accomplished by the combination of focal plane shutters that are coupled to the rotor of the projector and a supplementary shutter arrranged to trim the projected light so that discrete "left eye" and "right eye" images are projected. Various embodiments are disclosed in which a rotary blade shutter is located at the stop of the projection lens. Where there are two projection lenses, a single blade or two counter-rotating blades trim the light projected through both lenses.
Abstract: A protective mitten for use by a hockey goalkeeper which has a catching portion separate from but interconnected with a gripping portion. The catching portion is shaped so as to enable a hockey puck to be caught and held therein. The gripping portion offers a better grip on the handle of a hockey stick than can be achieved by trying to grasp the handle in the catching portion.
Abstract: A process is described for recovering vanadium and zeolitic alumino-silicates from flyash and similar carbon-bearing heat treated materials. The process includes steps for the separation of carbon, followed by pressure leaching the carbon-depleted flyash in relatively dilute alkali metal hydroxide solutions at elevated temperatures. The leach liquor is separated from the residue and is subsequently treated in an amine containing solvent extraction process step for vanadium recovery, and optionally, for other metals present in the leach liquor. The vanadium in the strip liquor is precipitated to obtain vanadium containing compounds. The leach residue is treated separately to recover zeolitic alumino-silicates therefrom. In another variation of the process, the vanadium is recovered from the leach liquor by means of a strong base anoin exchange resin.

Abstract: In a mass spectrometer system, ions travel through an orifice in an inlet plate into a first vacuum chamber containing AC-only rods, and then through an orifice into a second vacuum chamber containing a standard quadrupole. The second vacuum chamber is held at low pressure, e.g. 0.02 millitorr or less, but the product of the pressure in the first chamber times the length of the AC-only rods is held above 2.25.times.10.sup.-2 torr cm, preferably between 6.times.10.sup.-2 and 15.times.10.sup.-2 torr cm, and the DC voltage between the inlet plate and the AC-only rods is kept low, e.g. between 1 and 30 volts, preferably between 1 and 10 volts. This produces a large enhancement in ion signal, with less focussing aberration and better sensitivity at high masses, and also allows the use of smaller, cheaper pumps so the system can be more easily transportable.
Abstract: A sensor unit is disclosed for use in monitoring in situ changes in dynamic and static stress properties of any material to be monitored, such as monolithic concrete or underground rock structures. The sensor unit includes a hollow, waterproof tubular body to be inserted into a cylindrical borehole in the material to be monitored. A transducer is mounted within the body, which by means of strain gauges, provides an output signal responsive to deflection of the sidewall of the borehole. The transducer is coupled to the sidewall by means of pressure buttons. A monitor is also disclosed, which comprises the sensor unit, a data collection unit and a data analyzing unit. A method for sensing dynamic and static changes in material stresses is also disclosed.

Abstract: A sealing ring for use in sealing a spigot and the like in an oversized hole is formed of resilient material and comprises a proximal portion, a distal portion and an intermediate seating portion. The proximal portion has an external diameter greater than the diameter of the hole and is adapted for location in a seating groove surrounding the spigot The distal portion has an external diameter between The diameters of the spigot and the hole and an internal diameter less than the spigot diameter and is adapted for location in the gap between the spigot and the hole. The intermediate seating portion is between the proximal and distal portions and tapers inwardly from the proximal portion to the distal portion such that the intermediate seating portion seats on the edge of the hole and centers the seal and spigot.
Abstract: A method of erecting a weather resistant transportable building enclosure is disclosed. The method includes the steps of assembling a plurality of elements to form a roof ridge, assembling a plurality of panel supporting elements to form girders of a predetermined length extending laterally from the roof ridge and pivotally attaching girders to the roof ridge. The next step is to raise the roof ridge a predetermined amount and to further attach the girders to the roof ridge to rotationally fix the pivotal attachment. At this stage a roof skeleton has been formed. Then panels can be attached onto said roof skeleton to form a load supporting roof. A final step is to simultaneously raise the roof, attach a plurality of elements to form side wall columns, and secure a plurality of panels onto the columns to form side walls for the enclosure. The enclosure is comprised of an internal rigid load supporting framework and an external load supporting surface.
Abstract: A sealing member for a container has a membrane, e.g. aluminum foil, and a first sheet, e.g. polyester, part of which is bonded to the membrane. The other part of the sheet is free, so as to form a tab, to enable the seal to be detached. The seal can be attached to the neck of a bottle by a hot melt adhesive. The sheet and membrane can be stamped from a compound sheet and be of the same size.
Abstract: A method of producing and displaying a 3-D motion picture is disclosed. Two master film negatives are prepared using a camera rig employing one camera that looks directly at the subject through a semi-transparent mirror and a second camera that looks at the same subject by way of the reflective surface of the mirror, to obtain left and right eye images. The cameras are oriented so that the mirror images recorded by the second camera are turned laterally of the film in being reflected by the mirror. Contact prints are made from the negatives. Before projecting the images, the contact print from the negative that was shot by way of the mirror is turned about its longitudinal axis so that images on that print are turned laterally. Images from the two prints are simultaneously projected onto the same screen to produce a coincident 3-D image. The left and right eye images are optically coded, for example by using optical filters that are polarized at right angles to one another.
Abstract: An improved oxidation and photooxidation process for treating water containing an oxidizable contaminant. In one embodiment, the organic compound does not have an electron donating aromatic group. A stochiometric excess amount of a calcium salt is added to precipitate carbonate and bicarbonate ions contained in the water as calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate is removed from the water and the filtered water is then subjected to an oxidation process. In another embodiment, the organic compound does have an electron donating aromatic group. Carbonate and/or bicarbonate is added so that the water has a stochiometric excess amount of carbonate and bicarbonate. The water is then subjected to an oxidation process.

Abstract: A flooring unit for an animal enclosure such as a chicken coop or pen is disclosed. The unit is of relatively thin and flat rectangular shape overall and was a planar tread surface, two transverse elongate mounting members at respectively opposite ends and two longitudinal engagement members at respectively opposite sides of the unit moulding. A grid-like area is provided between the members and includes openings through which waste material can pass. The mounting members are designed to receive fastening elements such as screws for securing the unit to an underlying support. Also, they may be of L-shape in cross-section and are complementary to one another so that two similar floor units may be positioned end-to-end with respective, complementary mounting members fitted together. Fastening elements can then be driven through both mounting members and into the support. The engagement members are designed to engage a respective, corresponding engagement member of an adjacent moulding.
