Abstract: A thick film, electroluminescent lamp and method of construction in which a single non-hygroscopic binder is used for all layers (with the optional exception of the rear electrode), thereby reducing delamination as a result of temperature changes and the susceptibility to moisture. The use of a common binder for both phosphor and adjacent dielectric layers reduces lamp failure due to localized heating, thus increasing light output for a given voltage and excitation frequency, and increasing the ability of the lamp to withstand overvoltage conditions without failure. Layers may be provided on both sides of a common rear electrode to provide a lamp with two independently operable lamp surfaces. A front electrode may be exposed on a side of the lamp with the rear electrode by cutting the layers down to the front electrode after the layers have been joined.
Abstract: Particle compositions are described comprising certain metal halides in combination with a strengthening agent. The addition of the strengthening agent to a metal halide particle increases the particle's strength thereby reducing breakage on impact and during handling. When used as a vaporizable metal halide fill in discharge lamps, the particle strength is increased without significantly altering the spectral and electrical characteristics of the lamp. Methods of making the particles and arc tube containing the particles are also disclosed.

All changes are saved as "data". All data is displayed as "Grid" or as "Property Sheet", with GUI to:a. change display capabilities,b. change validation, andc. change defaults.
Abstract: A contact region for a trench in a semiconductor device and a method for electrically contacting the conductive material in a trench that is too narrow for conventional electrical contacts may include a contact region in which the trench is divided into two or more trench sections, each section having the same narrow width as the undivided trench. The two or more trench sections are separated by one or more islands that are isolated from the semiconductor device. An aperture through the material above the contact region provides access for electrically contacting the conductive material in the trench sections.
Abstract: A system and method for transmitting information in which a relatively narrowband signal is transmitted followed by the transmission of a relatively wideband signal. The narrowband signal may be used by the receiver to alert the receiver to the upcoming wideband signal. In a system in which the transmissions occur asynchronously to the receiver, the receiver may be less complicated because the receiver is provided with an indication of the time and/or the center frequency of the wideband signal. Either the narrowband signal or the wideband signal may be used to transmit information from the transmitting device to the receiver. The system and method find particular advantage in tracking and locating systems in which a plurality of tags asynchronously transmit information and/or location information to a receiver or a set of receivers.

Abstract: A system for identifying the presence of unauthorized mobile units in a communications system is disclosed. The system comprises at least one base station, at least two mobile units, at least one control channel, and at least one voice channel. The base station and a mobile unit first establish a connection on a control channel. Then they re-establish the connection on a voice channel. Subsequently, and while the communication continues on the voice channel, the base station sends a signal on the control channel to all other mobile units using the same identification as the first mobile unit. If any mobile units respond to the subsequent signal on the control channel, then the base station positively identifies the presence of an unauthorized mobile unit.
Abstract: A supervisory system for a network of communications stations in which a response to a query to one station may be received and interpreted by a plurality of other stations in the network. Upon receipt of a command from a master station, a slave station sends a responsive signal that includes the identity of the command. Each master station monitors the network and keeps track of the status of each slave station by updating its status records upon receipt of one of the responsive signals containing the command identity. Each master station operates independently and all of the stations may be master stations. The multiple master stations may each attempt to exert control over the slave stations in the network at any time.
Abstract: A wireless PBX system utilizes base stations dispersed throughout an area to be served with wireless telephone service. The base stations utilize multiple antennae to reduce problems associated with fading and multipath. In the present invention, the antennae of a base station or similar apparatus are rotatable, at least in pairs, so that the base station may be hung vertically, horizontally, or at some other angle to the horizon and the antennae may be readily oriented to a position which provides for preferred propagation characteristics for the antennae for the local area in which the base station is mounted.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the timing of symbols within a multiple symbol telecommunicated message by evaluating signal characteristics in both the preamble and data portions of a message. Samples of a received signal are taken at a periodic basis and a predetermined characteristic of the signal is evaluated for each sample. The sum of every ith sample may be evaluated to determine the symbol framing within the message.

Abstract: A method of fabricating a UMOS semiconductor device includes a blanket implant of an N type dopant into a surface of a substrate (for forming source regions), a high energy implant of a P type dopant into the substrate (for forming body regions), an etch through a hard mask to form trenches and mesas (each of the mesas having a source region at its top and a body region below), and concurrently (i) providing a gate dielectric on the sidewalls of the trenches and (ii) redistributing the dopants so that the body regions extend deeper into the substrate beneath the centers of the mesas than adjacent the walls of the trenches. Contact windows are etched in the mesas to allow electrical contact with the source regions and the body regions. The initial implant of P type dopant may be a blanket implant or an implant through a mask which concentrates the P type dopant in the centers of the mesas.

Abstract: A scale has marks of a point-symmetrical shape which are arranged in matrix. The scale and an article to be measured in dimension are positioned without any relative movement. An image sensor unit detects a predetermined portion of the article and the marks of the scale corresponding to the predetermined portion of the article selectively and successively, and the image sensor unit generates output signals in accordance with the detected results of the article and the scale. The output signals are processed to calculate the dimension of the article.

Abstract: A complementary multiplexer with low disabled output capacitance and method in which a plurality of switched buffers are packaged together to avoid the capacitance of a plurality of switched buffers applied to the printed-circuit board transmission lines.
Abstract: A trimmable current cell and method for providing an output current at a desired level which may be used to provide a particular current level for a digital-to-analog converter. The cell includes a first circuit with two fixed resistors connected in series which initially establish the output current, and a second circuit for trimming the output current from the first circuit to the desired level. The second circuit has a series-connected pair of trimmable resistors whose common node is connected to the first circuit at a common node between the fixed resistors. Trimming one of the trimmable resistors increases the output current to the desired level and trimming the other of the trimmable resistors decreases the output current to the desired level.
Abstract: A method and system for predistorting a signal before transmission of the signal to compensate for nonlinearities introduced when the signal is transmitted to a receiver. A signal received on a first frequency is evaluated at a receiver to determine whether the received signal includes nonlinearities without comparing the received signal to the original signal or a pilot tone. The nonlinearity data that result from the evaluation are transmitted back to the originator of the signal on a second frequency where the nonlinearity data are used to predistort signals before transmission therefrom. Communication of the nonlinearity data between transmitter and receiver at each site is through a reverse channel which is further controlled by a serial line.
