  • Patent number: 5388555
Abstract: An outboard engine assembly for use on a boat includes an engine having a substantially vertical crankshaft and a pair of banks of vertically juxtaposed horizontal cylinders, the banks being arranged in a V shape, the cylinders of the banks having axes angularly spaced from each other by an angle of 90.degree. or smaller. The outboard engine assembly has a propeller operatively connected to a downwardly extending vertical shaft coupled to the crankshaft. The engine and the vertical shaft is accommodated in a case assembly. The engine and the case assembly are installed on the hull of the boat by upper and lower support members. Vibroisolating rubber dampers are disposed between the boat hull and the upper and lower support members for isolating vibrations from the engine from the boat hull.

  • Patent number: 5383733
Abstract: A cassette for ribbon for a printer, particularly a thermal printer, is disclosed. The cassette is configured to be stably mounted to a print carriage of a thermal printer, or to a storage turret mounted to the printer for storing a number of cassettes, and to be transferred by a passive transfer system between the print carriage and the storage turret simply in response to movement of the print carriage. A smooth, low friction path is provided for the ribbon within the cassette with no acute angle changes in the path when the cassette is in a printing position and being acted upon by the printer's print head. The cassette is provided with a brake mechanism which automatically engages the supply and take-up reels in the cassette when the cassette is removed from the print carriage, and automatically disengages the brake mechanism when the cassette is mounted to the print carriage.

  • Patent number: 5383211
Abstract: A semiconductor laser source using a strained active layer of InGaAsN, introduced by the addition of N in the alloy, to obtain semiconductor laser sources that emit TM-polarized light in the wavelength range above 850 nm. The presence of N in the alloy reduces the lattice constant and produces the desired strain effect, i.e., biaxial tension which raises the light hole band (yielding TM polarization) and produces a narrowing of the band gap. Adding In can reduce the strain in the alloy while maintaining the desired band gap and light-hole/heavy-hole ordering.

  • Patent number: 5379312
Abstract: Ridged waveguide and selectively-buried ridged waveguide, index-guided, visible semiconductor lasers incorporating a lattice-mismatched, preferably tensile-strained, etch-stop layer in the design and fabrication of the laser. Compared with other structures with etch-stop layers that are lattice matched, the etch-stop layer of the invention would have greater etch-rate selectivity, and the resulting structure would be more optically transparent with less transverse mode distortion and would present fewer difficulties with layer regrowth. These advantages would translate into greater design flexibility, more reliable fabrication, and better device performance. A preferred material for the etch-stop layer is Ga.sub.x In.sub.1-x P (x>0.5).

  • Patent number: 5374452
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing organized powders. The powder comprises a set of core particles and a set of satellite particles. To form the organized powders, a substantially homogenous dispersion of each set is made in a dispersing liquid; the resultant dispersion is then sprayed in suitable conditions to form the organized powder. The organized powders obtained are characterized by a very uniform covering of the core particles regardless of their shape.

  • Patent number: 5371928
Abstract: Apparatus for feeding a fiber batt to a needle loom, in which a gusset gap between an upper reversing roller of a pre-compression means and an upper supply roller is filled by an upper slim transmission roller rotatably suspended at its end portions by bracket means. The transmission roller is made from a carbon fiber reinforced resin material. The bracket means are composed each of two parts which may be released from each other. One part of each bracket means is mounted on the axis of the supply roller, whereas the other part is suspended in a stationary frame of the apparatus. By realeasing the parts of each other, an easy disassembly of the supply roller is enabled.

  • Patent number: 5369227
Abstract: A digitizer tablet with a cordless transducer which is capable of providing to the tablet information relating not only to the position of the pointing device but also with respect to the status of any button switches on the transducer. This is obtained by providing a plurality of oscillators, connected in circuits in which the relative ratio of the signal frequency outputs of the oscillators can be varied in response to activation of a switch while at the same time the sum of the amplitudes of the oscillating signals remain constant. Thus, the determination of the sum can be used as a indication of the position of the pointing device with respect to the tablet, whereas by determining the differences in the signal intensities of the different frequency oscillating signals, it is possible to determine the status of the button switches on the pointing device. The invention is typically used with a stylus or cursor driven tablet.

  • Patent number: 5367148
Abstract: Counterfeit objects, such as products or documents, can be detected by checking associated ID numbers, which include one or more appended fields of one or more randomly selected digits, in a database containing the correct authorized ID numbers. This use of random selection makes it impossible for counterfeiters to effectively predict or anticipate correct ID numbers. For example, by using bar coded ID numbers with two distinct appended fields of randomly selected numbers, instead of traditional serial numbers, counterfeit products can be conveniently and positively detected either on a wholesaler's or vendor's shelf using a truncated outside ID number found on the product's packaging, or, for example, upon receipt of a customer's product registration card on which the complete inside ID number is found, this complete inside ID number having been concealed from casual perusal during the product's distribution.

  • Patent number: 5362159
Abstract: A sealed four-row tapered roller bearing, useable for working rolls of roll stands, is provided with axial multipart inner and outer races and tapered rollers arranged between the bearing races, sealing of the seat of the outer race parts in the housing being preferably effected by O-rings which are arranged in annular grooves of the outer race parts. The bearing chamber is sealed axially outward by sealing rings which are fastened in annular grooves in the bore of the outer race parts and rest with sealing lips on surfaces of the inner race, the separating line between the front faces of the inner races being sealed off by a sealing ring which rests on the inner races.

  • Patent number: 5357793
Abstract: Device for measuring pressure differences or mass portions in a fluid flow--gas or liquid--and/or for implementing processes for mixing fluids, whereby when in use the fluid flows into the device, then passes a part therein where the fluid flow is laminar and the flow measurement is made, and finally flows out of the device, whereby the device has a turbulence filter which is integrated therein, with a settling chamber behind it. The fluid then first flows through that filter, so that a laminar flow leads to the flow measuring element.
