Patent number: 4258799Abstract: The inlet control valve described herein is useful in connection with pneumatic tools or the like that include a hollow tool body containing an air motor. A control valve is disposed in an inlet passageway extending to the air motor. The valve includes a first valve member that has a seal engaging an annular valve seat. A second valve member extends through a bore in the first valve member and is disposed in sealing engagement with a second annular seal member carried by the first valve member. The second valve member includes an operating member that also extends through the bore into engagement with the trigger mechanism of the tool so that displacement of the trigger to a first position tilts the second valve member off its seat permitting restricted flow through the passageway. Additional movement of the trigger displaces the first or main valve member off its seat permitting the maximum flow through the passageway.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1979Date of Patent: March 31, 1981Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventor: Richard E. Eckman

Patent number: 4234293Abstract: The pump described is of the canned motor type generally used for handling caustic materials where the motor is integrated into the pump, but must be totally sealed therefrom. The pump rotor is mounted on a hollow shaft that is supported by bearings on a hollow mandrel which has one end secured to the pump housing and the other end secured to a lug projecting from a rear shaft support plate. The lug is hollow and is provided with a plurality of ports that provide fluid communication between the motor housing and the pump inlet through the hollow mandrel. The shaft is arranged, when moved axially by the thrust developed by the centrifugal pump to open and close the ports regulating flow therethrough and thereby exerting a force on the shaft to counteract the thrust force generated during pumping.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1979Date of Patent: November 18, 1980Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventor: John R. Patent number: 4234325Abstract: The silencer-separator described hereinafter includes a tank that has an inlet arranged to receive the discharge from a vacuum blower or the like, a discharge located at the opposite end of the tank, a partition located therebetween with hole extending therethrough to permit the gas to flow from the discharge of the blower to the discharge of the tank. At the lowermost end of the tank, there is provided a drain for the liquid that is separated as the air enters the tank from the blower. An overflow conduit extends from adjacent the lowermost portion of the tank, through the partition and is connected with the liquid drain. With the conduit arranged in this manner, water, which is used to seal the blower, is located in the conduit preventing sound, generated as the gas is discharged from the blower, from passing through the conduit to the atmosphere via the drain.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1979Date of Patent: November 18, 1980Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventor: Wayne E. Patent number: 4213766Abstract: A gas conduit delivers gas to an electro-precipitator at an angle to the direction of gas flow through the precipitator. Projections are provided in the conduit adjacent the inlet to the precipitator to increase the thickness of the turbulent zone of the gas boundary layer; this urges gas towards upstream regions of the inlet of the precipitator, and thereby enhances even distribution of the gas across the inlet.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1978Date of Patent: July 22, 1980Assignee: Lodge-Cottrell, Ltd.Inventor: John G. Patent number: 4174848Abstract: An improved latching mechanism for retaining bits, such as chisels, chippers or scalers in reciprocating impact tools. The improved latching mechanism includes a latch member that is located in the hollow nose of the tool and is rotatable between latched and unlatched positions. A split spring encircles the nose and engages the latch member to prevent inadvertent rotation of the latch member and to retain the latch member in the nose. The latch member extends into the hollow nose and, when in the latched position, engages the bit to retain the bit in the tool while permitting limited reciprocating movement of the bit. When in the unlatched position, the latch member frictionally engages the bit to inhibit inadvertent discharge of the bit, while permitting intentional insertion and removal of the bit.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1978Date of Patent: November 20, 1979Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventor: Victor E. Richardson

Patent number: 4134286Abstract: A method of expanding a tube into engagement with a header wherein the expander is permitted to move longitudinally a predetermined amount relative to the tube while the expander is being rotated and expanding the tube into engagement with the header. The tube expanding apparatus includes a rotatable expander for insertion into the tube to be expanded, a stop collar that engages the header, a thrust collar that is fixed relative to the expander and a spring disposed between the stop collar and thrust collar permitting the thrust collar and expander to move relatively into the tube as the expander is rotated.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1977Date of Patent: January 16, 1979Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventor: Paul W. Patent number: 4128361Abstract: The improved locking means includes a pair of shaft mounted gears that are in mesh with the thread on the exterior of the feed screw mounted in the housing of a positive feed drill. On the opposite ends of the shafts are mounted gears which rotate with the shafts. When the drill tool holder is not to be advanced, the gears and shafts rotate as the feed screw is being rotated and thus do not cause axial movement of the feed screw as the feed screw rotates. A rack gear is located in the housing adjacent the spur gears. A pressure actuated piston is provided to move the rack gear into engagement with the spur gears to lock the spur gears and shafts against rotation. When this occurs, the gears in mesh with the thread on the feed screw act as a fulcrum so that the feed screw and tool holder are moved axially as the feed screw rotates.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1977Date of Patent: December 5, 1978Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventors: Robert F. Golwas, Herman G. Feuerstein

Patent number: 4109521Abstract: An elongated borehole logging instrument includes a permanent magnet linear reciprocating motor. The motor powers a sliding sleeve which has attached to its outer perimeter a series of reversible vanes. The vanes engage the mud cake or the borehole wall and thus generate a force opposite to the direction of the vane slant. The motor has a stationary electromagnetic field comprised of a plurality of coils connected to the control electronics. The floating outer sleeve has permanent magnets all oriented in the same direction. As the coils are pulsed alternatingly, the magnets are either repulsed or attracted to thus generate a reciprocating motion which transferred to the vanes moves the tool up or down, depending upon the position of the reversing actuator. The control electronics is responsive to the difference between the velocity of the well logging instrument, functionally related to its acceleration, and the velocity of the well logging cable at the earth's surface.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1977Date of Patent: August 29, 1978Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventor: Arthur H. Youmans
