  • Patent number: 4317765
Abstract: Hydroxyl-containing filler reinforced thermoplastic polymers, such as polyolefins, are disclosed having improved physical properties such as impact strength, break strength and flexural modulus. The filler is compatibilized with a thermoplastic polymer containing labile atoms by mixing the two together in the presence of a coupling agent, such as maleic anhydride and a free radical initiator such as a peroxide catalyst. In a preferred embodiment, clay is coated with polyethylene by mixing the two in the presence of a peroxide catalyst and maleic anhydride and the coated filler is then compounded with additional polyethylene. In another preferred embodiment, a filler is coated with a polyolefin having a high melt index and the coated filler is then compounded with a polyolefin having a lower melt index. Also disclosed are various means for molding the compatibilized composites of this invention.

  • Patent number: 4317357
Abstract: A tool for modifying openings in carburetor jets includes a base, upwardly extending guide rods, a relatively heavy tool-carrying block slidable on the rods, and a plate for holding the jet or jets to be modified. The plate has locating openings and the base has a locating pin, the locating openings being spaced so that when the proper one is placed on the pin the selected jet is accurately located beneath a tool carried by the block. The block, with the proper tool installed therein, is then lifted and allowed to drop so that the tool reduces the jet orifice size. The tools have rounded ends and diameters to properly modify various jets.

  • Patent number: 4312148
Abstract: Fishing lure bodies according to this invention comprise the combination of a main body composed of a soft, highly flexible, and resilient polymeric material, and at least a first, elongated appendage composed of a soft, highly flexible, resilient polymeric material having a low penetration resistance. The elongated appendage is coupled to the main body member in close proximity to the nose end thereof and has a thickness when relaxed and undistorted of between about 2 mm. and about 7 mm. The appendage has a length when relaxed and undistorted of at least about 2 cm. and is impaled axially by, and fully encloses the pointed end and barb of a hook. The combination of length, thickness and position of the coupling of the appendage to the main body together with softness, flexibility and low penetration resistance characteristics of the appendage are such that it functions as a weedguard. The bite of a fish causes the point and barb of the hook to penetrate outwardly through the appendage.

  • Patent number: 4313053
Abstract: A sleeve member (4) formed from a pipe length by expansion is placed over a mandrel onto which are wound the spaced turns (7) of a resistance heating wire (6). By heating sleeve member (4) the latter is shrunk onto the turns (7). By electrically producing heat in wire (6) material flows around the expanding turns (7) and embed the latter completely in sleeve member (4), projecting material portions (8, 9) being formed in the vicinity of turns (7). Thus, a protection against electric shock hazard is obtained for turns (7) and after-working is made unnecessary for the standing back edge portions of inner wall (5) which deform inwards during manufacture.

  • Patent number: 4312575
Abstract: A soft corneal contact lens comprising a soft, highly oxygen-permeable, polymeric lens having formed on the surface thereof an ultrathin, optically clear, impermeable barrier coating. The barrier coating is tightly cross-linked and comprises the reaction product resulting from an electrical glow discharge polymerization process conducted in a gaseous atmosphere and will prevent diffusion into the lens of lipids and other large molecules from the eye's tear film. The lens is formed from silicone or polyurethane. The gaseous atmosphere consists essentially of compounds selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbons; halogenated hydrocarbons; halogenated hydrocarbons and hydrogen; hydrocarbons and a halogen; and a mixture of any two or more of these compounds. The surface of the fully formed lens is highly hydrophilic which is accomplished during the polymerization process or in an additional step comprising glow discharge in the presence of oxygen or argon.

  • Patent number: 4312326
Abstract: A system for concentrating electro-magnetic radiation, such as solar radiation, by means of a plurality of reflectors mounted on a common frame and aimed at a radiation absorber that is rigidly coupled to the frame by an intermediate support. The combined frame, reflectors, absorber and intermediate support are coupled to a cantilever beam by means of a suspension assembly located between the absorber and the reflectors. This suspension is at the center of gravity of the combined frame, reflectors, absorber and intermediate support. The cantilever beam is coupled at one end to a main support and at the other to the suspension assembly. This suspension assembly allows the combined frame, reflectors, absorber and intermediate support to pivot relative to the beam about two perpendicular axes.
