  • Patent number: 4380171
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the contact force of a terminal mounted in a multi-terminal circuit board connector, the measured force being applied normal to the surface of a circuit board received in the connector, has a transducer employing four strain gauges connected in a bridge arrangement with pairs of the gauges being positioned at opposite ends of a fully supported beam. The strain at the end points of the beam are averaged by the strain gauges so that no matter where the forces are applied normal to the beam by the terminal being measured, the deflection is always negligible and the area of the beam upon which the contact force is applied is not critical.

  • Patent number: 4380360
Abstract: A cartridge, cartridge holder and connector system are disclosed formed primarily of two components, namely, an electronic component carrying cartridge and an assembly for receiving the cartridge and interconnecting it as an addition to existing equipment. The holder assembly includes a housing of rigid insulative material defining a cartridge receiving cavity and including means for interconnecting the cartridge to a circuit board or the like. The holder also includes a profiled and polarized entry leading to the cassette cartridge cavity. The cartridge is formed by a pair of mating housing members which enclose a circuit board having a plurality of components mounted thereon. An edge portion of the circuit board is accessible from one end of the cartridge so that when the cartridge is inserted into the cavity of the holder there is an electrical interconnection effected.

  • Patent number: 4379606
Abstract: A cartridge holder and interconnect system is disclosed formed primarily of two components, namely, a cartridge and an assembly for receiving and holding the cartridge. The holder assembly includes a housing of rigid insulative material and a connector member adapted to engage a circuit board or the like and to engage the cartridge. The holder assembly also has a replaceable face plate profiled for polarizing and keying reception of an appropriate cartridge in the housing. The face plate is detachably secured to the housing so that by simply replacing the face plate the housing can be adapted to receive different cartridges. The housing is also adapted to be situated spaced above a circuit board so as to accommodate components thereunder thereby preserving the available surface of circuit board.

  • Patent number: 4372634
Abstract: A connector assembly is disclosed having both the capability of being mass terminated and for effecting zero insertion force mating with conductive holes of a printed circuit board or the like. The subject connector system includes a pair of identical housing members, each of which receives a plurality of terminals therein, and a pair of hermaphroditic cover members. Each housing member is an elongated member of insulative material having a mating face and a plurality of terminal receiving passages opening onto the mating face. The terminals each have a first end lying within the housing and capable of effecting mass termination of individual conductors by insulation displacing means and a second end extending from the mating face of the housing in resilient cantilever beam fashion. Each of the hermaphroditic/cover members encloses a respective one of the housing members to form a complete subassembly.

  • Patent number: 4349238
Abstract: A connector is disclosed for mounting integrated circuit packages onto a printed circuit board or the like. The connector has a housing which is mounted on the printed circuit board and secured thereto by the terminals it carries in at least one row of aligned and spaced apart terminals. A terminal actuating insert is mounted in the housing for each row of terminals and positioned to act directly upon the terminals of that row. The connector also includes an actuating retainer or cover member which is applied after the integrated circuit package is placed into the housing. The actuating retainer or cover member acts on the inserts to cause the terminals to be closed about the leads of the integrated circuit package and also rests against the integrated circuit package to secure it in the housing.

  • Patent number: 4344225
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for pre-assembling a connector housing, which is pre-loaded with a plurality of terminals, with a respective connector cover and subsequently applying the pre-assembled connector to terminate a multi-conductor flat cable. The pre-loaded connector housings and the covers are separately fed to the apparatus by magazines. Each cover is positioned with respect to a housing and applied thereto with the assembly thereafter being rotated and moved to a termination station where a multi-conductor flat cable is terminated by the connector. The feed arrangement assures that only a single cover and connector will be fed from the respective magazines for each pre-assembly operation thereby obviating the possibility of jamming.
