  • Patent number: 6507973
Abstract: A heated wiper system is provided for mounting on a wiper arm of a windshield wiper assembly of a vehicle. A wiper blade selectively mounts on the free end of the wiper arm having a resilient wiper element arranged to slidably receive a heating element therein. A connector selectively mounts the heating element and an associated thermostat to an electrical supply of the system enabling the thermostat and heating element to be replaced independently of the wiper blade. When more that one wiper blade is provided, the respective heating elements preferably have lengths which correspond to the length of the respective wiper elements within which they are mounted. When the heating elements are of different length, a longest one of the heating elements preferably has a lower electrical resistance per unit length thereof than a shortest one of the heating elements. Total electrical resistances of the respective heating elements may thus be substantially equal.

  • Patent number: 6502379
Abstract: A crop harvesting header includes a cutter bar and a reel for controlling movement of the crop in the area over the cutter bar. The reel is rotatable about an axis generally parallel to the cutter bar and has a plurality of reel bats each having reel fingers projecting generally radially outwardly from the reel axis. The reel bats are pivotal each about a respective bat axis parallel to the reel axis so as to vary the angle of the fingers about the bat axis as the reel rotates. The reel co-operates with a cam carried on the header in generally stationary position so that each bat has a crank arm with a cam follower on the crank arm which follows the cam as the reel rotates and causes the required pivotal movement of the bat. The crank arm is arranged at an angle of the order of 135 degrees to the bat fingers so that the cam follower is angularly advanced in the cam relative to the bat axis.

  • Patent number: 6473904
Abstract: A wetsuit is provided having a torso portion arranged to be secured about a torso of a person. The torso portion includes a neck opening, a pair of upper limb openings and a pair of lower limb openings. A limb extension can be attached to each of the limb openings for covering a respective limb of the person. Each limb extension comprises an elongate tubular member extending longitudinally between an inner end arranged to be secured to the torso portion and an outer free end. The limb extensions can thus be added and removed as desired such that a single wetsuit can be modified for use in varying dive conditions. The use of a single adjustable suit is considerably less costly as compared to purchasing several different types of suits while being convenient enough to adjust to different dive conditions without the need to even remove the torso portion of the suit.

  • Patent number: 6476743
Abstract: A method for decoding information contained in a waveform having a series of peaks is disclosed which is particularly directed to a method for reading a magnetic stripe for example on a card that allows the information on the stripe to be read without the need for unidirectional, single stroke swiping motion of the stripe. Features are disclosed that permit the accurate decoding of magnetic stripe data to define the bi-phase coded bits in the presence of signal degradations caused specifically, but not exclusively, by variations in the read speed including stop events and reversals. The method uses sampling of the waveform at a variable rate based upon the area of the waveform. The samples are used to locate peaks in the waveform, the profiles of which are then compared using various criteria with trained model peaks to classify the peaks into different types based upon the intersection between the different bits allowed under the bi-phase coding rules.

  • Patent number: 6472871
Abstract: A method of generating a spectroscopic image using magnetic resonance includes obtaining spectroscopic data from voxels within the volume of interest of the sample by subjecting the sample to repeated magnetic resonance experiments in one, two or three dimensions. Each experiment is effected over a repetition time TR which is defined by the sum of the excitation time, the data acquisition time and any delay time prior to the next experiment. The experiments are arranged such that the repetition time is gradually reduced for experiments encoding higher spatial frequencies relative to an initial repetition time for experiments encoding lower spatial frequencies. To permit long data acquisition times at low spatial frequencies, but short repetition times at higher spatial frequencies, the initial data acquisition time is relatively long but is gradually reduced for experiments encoding higher spatial frequencies, only reducing the data acquisition time after the delay time is reduced to zero.

  • Patent number: 6464296
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for inverting a person for various therapeutic purposes. The apparatus comprises a chair which is pivotally supported about a horizontal axis between various positions having different relative inclinations. When used for inversion, a stop is mounted on the chair to restrict rearward pivotal movement of the person from an upright position to an inverted position. The method thus includes pivoting the person forwardly from the upright position to the inverted position in which the person is substantially inverted in relation to the upright position. The chair may further include a damper and a biasing device for dampering the pivotal displacement of the chair and biasing the chair to the upright position. A lift mechanism may further be used for raising the chair in the inverted position.

  • Patent number: 6453922
Abstract: A portable shelter is provided which is particularly useful for shielding seated occupants in a boat and the like from the weather including wind and water spray. The shelter includes a base member and a generally U-shaped frame member which pivotally mounted on the base member for movement between an extended position in which the frame member extends upwardly from the base member and a collapsed position folded alongside the base member. Sheeted material is provided for spanning between base member and the frame member in the extended position. A tensioning mechanism is coupled between the base member and the frame member for biasing the frame member into the extended position with the sheeted material under tension. The tensioning mechanism is collapsible with the frame member into the collapsed position thus providing an easily portable shelter which is self supporting in the extended position.

  • Patent number: 6451568
Abstract: We report the first cloning and expression, from a mammalian source, of proteins capable of catalyzing choline- and ethanolaminephosphotransferase reactions (hCEPT1 and hCEPT2). Both coding regions predict highly hydrophobic proteins of 43-46.5 kDa with several predicted membrane spanning domains. A CDP-alcohol phosphotransferase motif, DG(x)2AR(x)8G(x)3D(x)3D, has been identified in both hCEPT1 and hCEPT2 choline- and ethanolamine-phosphotransferases (and several other lipid synthesizing enzymes that catalyze the formation of a phosphoester bond by the displacement of CMP from a CDP-alcohol by a second alcohol). Site-directed mutagenesis was used to differentiate the residues responsible for choline- versus ethanolamine-phosphotransferase activity. Mutation of glycine 156 of hCEPT1 abolished ethanolaminephosphotransferase activity, while cholinephosphotransferase activity remained intact.
