Abstract: Disclosed is a one-step method of producing an industrial asphalt from a bituminous material which comprises mixing together without air-blowing:(a) a feed material comprising a bituminous material having a viscosity of at least 50 centistokes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit and wherein the feed petroleum residuum forms a single phase when mixed with 5 percent ferric chloride; and(b) from about 0.1 to 20.0 percent by weight of ferric chloride, said mixing being done at a temperature in the range of 351 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit, whereby the softening point of the feed is substantially increased and the penetration is significantly decreased.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for a barbed anchor pile is described in which a pile, having horizontally placed barbs, is driven into the seafloor. Once it is buried to a predetermined depth, the barbs are spread outward into the surrounding soil to ensure that the pile will not be pulled out by uplift loads.
Abstract: A tuned optical fiber grating and a tuning process is disclosed. The gratings on the optical fiber ar tuned so that the reflectance of the grating can occur at a specific wavelength. The process involves encasing that portion of the fiber containing the grating while shining light of the wavelength of desired reflectance through the fiber and stretching the grating until reflectance occurs. Thereafter, the tuned grating is sealed within a tube formed around the tuned grating.

Abstract: Process for extracting naphthenic acids from petroleum distillates having ASTM acid numbers of at least 0.2. The process uses a solvent system comprising liquid alkanols, water, and ammonia in certain critical ratios, which facilitates the selective extraction of naphthenic acids and easy separation of the solvent and extract from the extracted petroleum distillates.
Abstract: Method and means are provided for determining the position of a submerged marine streamer towed behind an exploration vessel. An array of sets of at least three transponders secured to the ocean floor generate distinguishable acoustic pulses upon a command signal. These signals are received by receivers housed in the streamer. The position to each receiver may be triangulated from the data generated.
Abstract: This invention relates to normally liquid lubricating oil additives which provide both anti-oxidant and friction-modifying properties when added to lubricating oil. In particular, this invention relates to C.sub.14 to C.sub.18 alkyl catechol lubricating oil additives which are normally liquid at typical storage temperatures.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for sensing organic liquids, vapors and gases which includes a resistivity sensor means comprising an intimate admixture of conductive particles and a material capable of swelling the presence of the liquid, gas or vapor to be detected and an electrical contact thereto.
Abstract: Disclosed are additives which are useful as dispersants in lubricating oils, gasolines, marine crankcase oils and hydraulic oils. In particular, disclosed are alkenyl or alkyl succinimides which have been modified by treatment with glycidol.
Abstract: Lubricating oils containing borated alkyl catechols and a succinimide have been found to reduce fuel consumption in an internal combustion engine.
Abstract: Disclosed is a one-step method of producing an industrial asphalt from a bituminous material which comprises mixing together without air-blowing:(a) a feed material comprising a bituminous material having a viscosity of at least 50 centistokes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit and wherein the feed forms a single phase when mixed with 5 weight percent zinc chloride; and(b) from about 0.1 to 20.0 percent by weight of zinc chloride, said mixing being done at a temperature in the range of 351 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit, whereby the softening point of the feed is substantially increased and the penetration is significantly decreased.
Abstract: Lubricating oils containing borated alkyl catechols-succinimide complex are effective in reducing fuel consumption in an internal combustion engine.
Abstract: A subsea drilling and production system where the production unit is removably connected onto a drilling template and operatively connected to one or more Christmas trees so that the production unit may be disconnected from the trees and removed from the template without first removing any of the trees and so that any of the trees may be disconnected from the production unit and removed from the underwater site without removing the production unit.
Abstract: A method for preparing magadiite is described wherein the reaction mixture for crystallization thereof contains as a promoter, a hydrocarbon substituted urea or amide. The magadiite prepared according to this method may act as a source of silica in preparing crystalline zeolites or molecular sieves.
Abstract: Disclosed are additives which are useful as dispersants in lubricating oils, gasolines, marine crankcase oils and hydraulic oils. In particular, disclosed are additives prepared by first reacting a polyamine with a cyclic carbonate followed by reaction of this intermediate with an alkenyl or alkyl succinic anhydride.
Abstract: A novel catalyst system for use in a distillation column reactor is disclosed including annularly-defined spaces within the reactor comprised of vapor-permeable material with packed catalyst and alternately positioned vapor barrier means.
Abstract: A method and means for storing a marine riser is disclosed for relocating an offshore mobile unit from a drilling or production site. The riser is disconnected from a subsea port and lowered into an auxiliary borehole. Means are provided for the lowering and raising of the marine riser and positioning of same.
