  • Patent number: 4312025
Abstract: A capacitor comprises a resilient strip of magnetic material, such as steel, a strip of non-magnetic material such as brass and a layer of insulation between the two. An end portion of the resilient strip is movable between a position substantially parallel and close to the brass strip and a position as an angle to and spaced further from the brass strip. A magnetic coil or permanent magnet controls the position of the movable end portion of the resilient strip relative to the brass strip to thereby control the capacitance between the two strips.

  • Patent number: 4310814
Abstract: A transmission line hybrid junction which provides a power dividing and combining function between a first port and a pair of ports. In one embodiment it provides a well-matched, high-isolation, three-port, equal-power, equal-phase, power dividing junction with a bandwidth adequate for typical radio frequency applications. The hybrid junction comprises a single transmission line coupled to a pair of branch transmission lines, and a single resistive element coupled between the branch lines. The single transmission line comprises a quarter wavelength transforming section and each of the branch transmission lines comprises two cascaded quarter wavelength transforming sections. Coupling between two transforming sections of the branch transmission lines permits independent selection of the characteristic impedance of those sections in the odd and even modes of excitation.

  • Patent number: 4306704
Abstract: A solenoid comprises two coils wound on a common axis and a core within the coils which is supported for movement along the axis. Direct currents are applied substantially continuously to the two coils for resistively heating the solenoid to a temperature substantially above the ambient temperature. The direct currents are applied in the same direction to the two coils to produce additive magnetomotive forces when it is desired to energize the solenoid and in opposite directions to the two coils to produce subtractive magnetomotive forces which tend to cancel, when it is desired that the solenoid be in its unenergized condition.

  • Patent number: 4307347
Abstract: An envelope detector with an extended linear dynamic range. A first amplitude modulated carrier signal, which can be of an intermediate frequency, is supplied to a first input terminal of a mixer, preferably balanced. The said first signal is also amplified and limited to produce a second signal which is phase synchronized with the carrier signal of said first signal, and which is supplied to the local oscillator input terminal of the mixer. The mixer responds to said first and second signals to produce a substantially dc (baseband) output signal whose waveform is similar to the envelope of said first signal.

  • Patent number: 4306236
Abstract: A ranging radar of the radio frequency (RF) frequency modulated-continuous wave (FM-CW) type transmits an RF FM-CW signal to a reflecting surface at an unknown range R from the radar. The reflecting surface reflects the signal to a modulating device. The modulating device further modulates the signal at a frequency F which is high in comparison to the modulating frequency of the FM-CW signal. The further modulated signal is transmitted by the device to the reflecting surface and back to the ranging radar where it is subtractively mixed with a sample of a transmitted signal. The mixed signal is at frequency F amplitude modulated by a beat frequency, the period of which corresponds to range R. The frequency F is removed from the mixed signal leaving the beat frequency signal from which is determined range R.

  • Patent number: 4306308
Abstract: A data communications system for transmitting and receiving 64 different audio-frequency signals representing 64 respective alpha-numeric code symbols. A synchronizing signal consists of three time-spaced bursts where each burst consists of three audio-frequency signals. A following information signal consists of a three time-spaced message bursts where each burst consists of twenty audio-frequency signals, all three of the message bursts containing the same audio-frequency signals but in different orders. A receiver includes synchronizer means to recognize the predetermined synchronizing signal, and decoder means enabled and synchronized by the synchronizer means to decode the information signal. The audio-frequency signals may be 64 different fixed-frequency tones, or may be 64 differently-changing signals such as may be produced by unidirectional phase shift keying by 64 different pseudo-random number codes.

  • Patent number: 4303907
Abstract: A matrix array of row and column conductors, electrically isolated from each other, with a key switch connected between a row and a column conductor at each intersection of a row and a column conductor. Each column conductor is connected to a normally non-conducting current sourcing circuit and each row conductor is connected to a normally non-conducting current sinking circuit. Each key switch, when closed, connects its associated row and column conductors causing current to flow between that column's current sourcing circuit and that row's current sinking circuit. The current sourcing and the current sinking circuits associated with the particular switch closure then produce signals indicative of that key switch closure.

  • Patent number: 4301430
Abstract: Irises which exhibit capacitive reactance in a heavily loaded rectangular waveguide comprise generally U-shaped conductive vanes positioned in the waveguide perpendicular to the length of the waveguide with the opening of the "U" toward a broad wall of the waveguide but spaced therefrom. These irises are effective for increasing the electrical length of ferrite rectangular waveguide phase shifters. These irises may be added to the completed phase shifter to adjust its length by inserting them through previously formed apertures in one of the narrow walls of the waveguide.
