  • Patent number: 6016290
Abstract: A read/write head for use in data storage drives includes a thermally assisted inductive write section and a magnetic read section to write data onto, and retrieve data from a storage medium. The write section includes a waveguide formed of a core and a surrounding cladding, and positioned between a first write pole and a second write pole, to conduct a laser beam for heating the medium. The second write pole and the optical waveguide core are offset relative to each other at the pole tip, such that they define an overlap region that determines a written track width. The offsetting facilitates manufacturing process since the optical waveguide core and the second write pole can be made wide enough while still defining tracks with a limited width.

  • Patent number: 6005674
Abstract: A system or a board that interacts with a processor and multi I/O devices such as high-speed facsimile modems. The processor inputs/outputs data to I/O devices. Each I/O device includes an indicator, such as an Interrupt Request output, to signify a request that the I/O device will output or input data. If the indicator signifies a request, the processor will input data from or output data to the I/O device within a predetermined period Ti, in order to prevent the data from being lost. To this end, the new system or board includes a timer that periodically interrupts the processor and causes it to execute an interrupt service at a period T, where T<=Ti, whereupon the processor detects the indicators of I/O devices, and reads data from or writes data to any I/O device that signals a request.

  • Patent number: 5986978
Abstract: A read/write head is structurally significantly less complicated than optical reading devices, requires minimal or no optical alignment, capable of writing at higher track densities, and has better control of the data and servo tracks than conventional magnetic heads. The head is also capable of using an available heat source and a relatively weak magnetic field, such as 300 Oersteds, to write data on a data storage medium. The combination of a magnetic read sensor with a near field magneto-optical (MO) write element creates a hybrid read/write head capable of high density recording with a high signal to noise ratio. The integration of the MO write element can be accomplished by various alternative or complementary methods. One method is to mount a heat source, such as a laser or light source on a slider with minimal or no additional optical components.

  • Patent number: 5986995
Abstract: A magneto-optical head using a catadioptric focusing device comprised of an incident surface, a bottom reflective surface, a pedestal, and a body. The incident surface is generally flat and is comprised of a central diffractive, optically transmissive facet and a peripheral facet comprised of a diffractive-reflective surface or facet. In a data writing or reading mode, an incident optical beam, such as a laser beam impinges upon the central facet, and is diffracted thereby. The incident laser beam can be collimated, convergent or divergent. The laser beam passes through the transparent body, and impinges upon the bottom reflective surface. The laser beam is then reflected by the bottom reflective surface, through the body, unto the peripheral diffractive-reflective surface.

  • Patent number: 5968626
Abstract: An optical data storage medium transmissive to a laser beam and formed of a light transmissive substrate that provides mechanical support, and a light transmissive data substrate formed on the substrate. The data substrate is patterned to form block regions that block the laser beam from passing through, and pass regions that allow the laser beam to pass through, such that the blockage or passage of light through the optical storage medium reflects the type of data bits to be stored on the optical medium. In another embodiment a magneto-optical data storage medium which is also transmissive (or partly transmissive) to a laser beam includes a data magneto-optical data substrate formed on a substrate. The data substrate is recordable by patterning a magnetic domain with magnetic fields of opposite directions, such that each magnetic direction reflects the type of data bits to be stored on the optical medium.

  • Patent number: 5966591
Abstract: A method of forming and handling an array of micro-devices such as thin film devices that enables simultaneous mass handling and processing of these thin film devices. A plurality of micro-devices and links are simultaneously formed on a wafer, with the links interconnecting the micro-devices for maintaining a unitary array structure. A matrix of magnetic strips is then formed to impart added overall tensile strength to the array. The magnetic strips are secured to the links and form a planar support grid therewith. The array of micro-devices is then released from the wafer and lifted therefrom by means of a magnetic pick-up tool. Using the pick-up tool, the array is transferred onto a magnetic chuck which securely retains the array. Conductive wires are bonded to a row of micro-devices devices which are then separated from the array into individual micro-devices.

  • Patent number: 5917904
Abstract: The present invention comprises four principle elements: (1) a telephone instrument; (2) a computer; (3) an automatic dialer; and (4) a telephone line. These elements allow for automatic dialing of local and long distance calls in the United States, as well as automatic dialing of international calls. The automatic dialing feature is accomplished, in part, by implementing a computerized data base grouped in n-files. These files may be searched by the computer system during and after the caller dials a number. If the dialed number matches one of the numbers in the files, the system may automatically out-dial the dialed number.

  • Patent number: 5886959
Abstract: A thin-film coil for use in a flying magneto-optical data storage system is formed on an undercoat layer, and includes an underside and a conductor deposited on the undercoat layer. The conductor is covered by an insulation layer on which a yoke is formed for providing a path to a magnetic field generated by the conductor. The yoke is formed of three sections: an upper section, an intermediate section, and the tip. The yoke tip defines an optical opening and has its underside substantially flush with the underside of the undercoat layer for increasing the density of the magnetic field at a target distance from the coil. The yoke tip underside is defined by an inner edge that delineates the optical opening, and that is formed of two semi-circular sections and two linear sections tangential to the semi-circular sections. The yoke can optionally include an outer section that extends over the peripheral side of the insulation layer and that further extends in an enlarged toe section.

  • Patent number: 5881064
Abstract: A node system for use in a data communication network including a plurality of source and destination data communication devices. The node system receives data packets from another node system, and forms image data from the received data packets. The node system selectively inserts fill codes into the image data so that such selective insertion of the fill codes prevents service interruption between the plurality of source data communication devices and the plurality of destination data communication devices by correcting a temporary inability to receive additional data, and by maintaining real time communication between the plurality of source data communication devices and destination data communication devices. The node system is capable of sending the image data and the fill codes to the plurality of destination data communication devices.

  • Patent number: 5879102
Abstract: A clamp that locks two telescoping components such as a vehicle receiver hitch and a draw bar, for substantially reducing if not eliminating the "banging" or "rattling" between the two components. The clamp includes a standard sized U-bolt, whose throat rests in a seat formed by a receiver hitch collar and a receiver hitch tube. A bar has an arc-shaped cross-section and includes two holes adapted for receiving the threaded ends of the U-bolt. When the draw bar is inserted into the receiver hitch, the arc-shaped side of the bar is positioned within a seat formed by the receiver hitch collar and the draw bar. Standard locking style nuts are threaded onto the legs of the U-bolt and tightened, causing the arc-shaped side of the bar to be wedged against the receiver hitch collar and the draw bar, while wedging the U-bolt throat against the opposite side of the receiver hitch collar and the receiver hitch.

  • Patent number: 5877923
Abstract: A magnetic head suspension assembly includes a load beam which enables a close disk-to-disk spacing in a disk drive, high production yield, and increased torsional stiffness and resistance to vibrational modes. The load beam has a low profile, high resonance configuration, which minimizes the overall size of the magnetic head suspension assembly, and which improves manufacturability and robustness of magnetic head suspension assemblies by increasing the load beam resonance frequency and reducing the oscillation gain. The load beam is formed with a forward section that extends rearwardly into a central major section, a flexure secured to the forward section, and an air bearing slider secured to the flexure for free gimbaling motion while flying above an associated disk during operation in a disk drive. The forward section of the load beam covers substantially the entire surface of said flexure to provide it with sufficient rigidity and support.
