Abstract: A non-destructive method of measuring physical characteristics of a medium, such as uncemented sediment, sandstone, or limestone. A pseudo-random code is generated and is used to generate a pseudo-random acoustic signal. This signal is transmitted into the medium to be measured through the use of a transducer, such as a piezoelectric element, and is received by a plurality of hydrophones. The received signal is then processed to obtain an image of its velocity and attenuation. A universal geoacoustic model of the medium for a given set of measured data is determined, and the model is solved to obtain a pair of permeability-porosity results for the medium. The one of this pair of permeability-porosity results which is correctly indicative of the physical characteristics of the medium is then determined.

Abstract: This invention can considerably improve the adhesion property of a film to a matrix surface of a silicon steel sheet by forming an interface layer such as nitride-oxide layer of one or more selected from Fe, Si, Al and B or an extremely thin base film formed by finely dispersing nitride-oxide of one or more selected from Fe, Si, Al and B in the same film components as a tension insulating film at an interface between the matrix surface and the tension insulating film, or further by immersing in an aqueous solution of a chloride mainly composed of SiCl4 to dissolve the matrix surface or conducting a smoothening treatment or a pickling treatment with an aqueous solution containing SiCl4 prior to the formation of the interface layer, and hence ultra-low core loss grain oriented silicon steel sheets having a core loss considerably superior to that of the conventional one and an excellent magnetostriction property can be obtained very cheaply and in a higher productivity.

Abstract: Methods and adhesive labels useful in marking products or documents by applying these to substrates. A mark such as a barcode, photograph or characters are formed directly on the substrate and the adhesive label is applied over it. The adhesive label includes a concealing film layer which is transparent to a first wavelength outside the visible region, a diffractive optical mark with a transparent reflective layer and an adhesive layer. The first wavelength may be infrared allowing the underlying mark to be read by an IR laser. The adhesive labels are formed as to allow them to be continuously separated from a temporary detachment layer, thereby exposing the adhesive layer, and affixed to the document.

Abstract: A cable retaining mechanism has a hollow body containing a plurality of projections extending radially into the hollow cavity. The projections are spaced equidistantly from each other and have a resiliency such that each projection exerts equal retaining pressure on the cable passing through the hollow body. The equal pressure retains the cable in a central location within the hollow body. This allows for symmetrical application of a shrinkable protective layer to secure the cable and mechanism.
Abstract: The present invention is a method for acyloxylating an alkyl group substituted aromatic compound at the side chain, by letting the alkyl group substituted aromatic compound and a carboxylic acid and/or a carboxylic anhydride react with each other in the presence of an oxygen containing gas. In this case, if (1) a solid catalyst in which at least one selected from cobalt, cerium and manganese is supported on a solid material or (2) a catalyst containing at least one selected from cobalt oxides, cerium oxides and manganese oxides is used, an alkali group substituted aromatic compound and a carboxylic acid and/or a carboxylic anhydride can be caused to react with each other efficiently in the presence of an oxygen containing gas, and in addition the catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction solution.
Furthermore, (3) a compound diacyloxylated at the side chains can be highly selectively produced if a cerium compound is used as a catalyst in the absence of a cobalt compound and a manganese compound.
