Abstract: In a fluid-pressure operated anti-skid braking system operation of a control valve is controlled by a force of which the magnitude is determined by utilization of the pressure in a memory chamber defined between a pair of relatively movable spaced pistons. The piston carries a head which forms part of the valve, and the other piston is exposed to an operator-controlled pressure from an inlet passage.
Abstract: Shoring sheets are provided with a continuous rack extending for the full height of the sheet engageable by a ratchet jack supported on the ground surface at the side of a trench or hole to enable the sheets to be jacked up and down. Abstract: A control valve assembly for a vehicle dual hydraulic braking system in which hydraulic fluid from a distributor chamber can be supplied to one or both of a pair of outlets for connection to brakes on opposite sides of a vehicle. The assembly incorporates a pressure control valve operable to supply fluid under pressure to the chamber from an outlet for connection to a pressure source, irrespective of whether one or both of two separate brake-applying valves are to be operated, and a one-way valve is located on the upstream side of the pressure control valve to prevent flow in a reverse direction. A back-up piston works in a bore in communication with the chamber, and is provided to pressurize fluid in the chamber after an exhaust valve has closed and a pressure control valve has opened.
Abstract: In a disc brake of the slidable reaction type in which an hydraulic actuator is located in a stationary member, a clamp member is guided for movement relative to the stationary member in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the disc by means of a pin which is connected to one of the members and is slidably mounted in the other member.
Abstract: An installation for the production of continuously cold rolled sheets or strips wherein the continuous operation is effected when a coil of the cold rolled sheet metal or strip is directly and effectively produced from a coil of the hot rolled sheet metal or strip.
Abstract: The particular machine described has a series of main collets mounted in an indexable drum, each main collet having an associated reciprocable feed tube carrying at its rear end a one-way feed collet employing wedging elements in the form of spring-loaded balls carried in inclined bores of the feed collet body, the feed tubes and feed collets being indexed with the main collets and with a reel-type bar holder. When the collets are arranged to feed non-round bar stock each feed collet is keyed to its associated main collet to enable non-rotating bar stock to be introduced into a rotating feed collet from the bar holder, to be rotated by the feed collet, and then fed through the main collet without stopping the main collet. An axially movable and retractable stop is provided at the feeding station to ensure that an adequate length of bar stock is gripped by a main collet during subsequent machining.
Abstract: An alternating current rotating electric machine having a permanent magnet rotor comprising a generally cylindrical body of magnetic material having a plurality of regularly spaced, inwardly extending slots formed around its circumference so as to define pole-pieces therebetween connected by magnetic material of the body at the base of the slots, and a plurality of permanent magnets which are located in said slots so as to induce poles of alternate polarity in the pole-pieces, the central axes of the slots being uniformly inclined relative to respective radii of the body which pass through the centers of the outer open ends of the slots, and the magnetic axes of the magnets extending transversely of the respective central axes of the slots.
Abstract: A hammock chair which is adapted to be suspended and in which a person is seated has a seat part including a back supporting part, and means are provided by which an inwardly projecting ridge is formed in the back supporting part which extends transversely of the suspended chair to provide support to the small of the back of the user.
Abstract: A reservoir of synthetic plastics material for a master cylinder is constructed from a base and a lid which are permanently connected together at their mating faces, for example by welding, along a join line which lies in a single plane. A partition is upstanding from the base and a passage defined by a wall and including a portion of the lid provides limited communication between chambers on opposite sides of the partition. At least one end of the passage lies outside at least one edge of the lid and the join line passes through the partition.
Abstract: An apparatus for an electric furnace capable of effecting electrode connection and refractory lining repairs independently of each other. Mounted on a common supporting member are an electrode connecting device for suspending a new electrode and a refractory lining repairing device having a revolvable nozzle for blowing the refractory lining patching mixture against the eroded cavities in the lining in such a way that they may be traversed along the supporting member independently of each other. The new electrode suspended by the electrode connecting device is rotated whle being lowered so as to be screwed into the consumed electrode. The eroded refractory lining is repaired with the refractory lining repairing device.
Abstract: In an internal shoe-drum brake a thrust transmitting member is interposed between a shoe-end and an abutment for that shoe-end. The thrust transmitting member has a planar face engaging with the abutment and an arcuate face which is received in a complementary recess of arcuate outline in the shoe-end.
Abstract: A control valve assembly for vehicle dual hydraulic braking systems is operated by a lever mechanism. The lever mechanism comprises first and second levers which are pivotally connected to each other by a first pivot. One lever acts on a valve mechanism for controlling pressurization of a distributor chamber, and the other lever is pivotally connected to a housing through a second pivot. Each lever acts on a respective one of a pair of brake-applying valves for controlling the supply of pressure fluid in the chamber to an outlet in the housing for connection to a wheel brake.
Abstract: The load-bearing components of an endless conveyor band are of composite construction, each component comprising two or more moulded plastics modules assembled together. The modules may be attached together by releasable connections. Where there are three or more modules comprising two end modules and one or more intermediate modules connected between the end modules, the or each intermediate module may be removable for varying the length of the load-bearing component.
Abstract: An extender for a combined double hung, double sash guide and weather strip unit is disclosed. The extender is slidably received in the open upper end of the parting bead of the weather strip unit and carries at its upper end prongs. When the extender is driven upwardly, as by raising the window sashes, the extender closes the air gap between the upper edge of the weather strip unit and the head jamb and at the same time the prongs are driven into the head jamb so that the extender also serves to attach the weather strip unit into the window frame thus eliminating the need for top staples or nails.
Abstract: In a pressure modulator for an anti-skid braking system a spring acts through a modulator piston to bias a piston assembly into a position in which an inlet for connection to a pressure source is connected to an outlet for connection to a wheel brake. Normally the spring force is augmented by pressure supplied to the modulator piston through an anti-skid mechanism which cuts off the pressure supply if deceleration of a wheel exceeds a predetermined value, whereby the piston assembly moves into a position in which the outlet is cut-off from the inlet.
