  • Patent number: 7547361
Abstract: The present invention discloses the fabrication of polymer-coated, coated fiber composites, hybrid composites and a method and apparatus for fabricating the same. The invention provides for the maximum spraying and coating of a roving of coated fibers with molten polymer streams without making physical contact with a solid media, thus simultaneously preventing the fiber surface from getting damaged and stripping off the coating. When metal-coated fiber is used the invention improves the electromagnetic shielding properties of any subsequent product made from the inventive composite. The method and apparatus of the present invention uses sets of nozzle-type sprayers having multiple orifices to enable the thermoplastic or thermoset polymer to penetrate more efficiently into the fiber bundle, thereby providing a more uniform coverage of all fibers. The hybrid composites can consist of two or more types of reinforcements and one or more type of matrix polymer.

  • Patent number: 7324030
Abstract: A delta sigma modulator which employs a plurality of accumulators with non-power-of-2 modulus. The accumulators may consist of a primary non-power-of-2 modulus accumulator and a secondary non-power-of-2 modulus accumulator. The number of bits in the primary accumulators affects the frequency resolution of the resultant delta sigma fractional N frequency synthesizer and can be the minimum number of bits required by the resolution specification. The secondary accumulator integrates the carry outputs of its corresponding primary accumulators. This integration results in attenuating the dc content of the modulator output by a factor equal to the modulus of the secondary accumulators and may require compensation in the recombination block.

  • Patent number: 7173690
Abstract: A preferred apparatus and method is presented in which a distributed fiber optic sensor is used in order to detect a disturbance along its length. A pulse of polarized light is launched into an optical fiber; as the pulse propagates along the optical fiber, it continuously loses a small portion of its energy due to Rayleigh backscatter. The Rayleigh backscattered light is analyzed using a polarization sensitive element such as a fiber polarizer. The dynamics of the time dependence of the polarization analyzed backscattered light is used to ascertain if there has been a disturbance along the length of the optical fiber. This technique can be used for applications in areas such as fiber optic telecommunications, perimeter security, fire detection, and pipelines.

  • Patent number: 7025942
Abstract: A method for controlling the extraction of gold from a gold ore by the cyanidation process in which a leaching step including the addition of a lead compound, which is typically lead nitrate or other lead salt, is used. In order to maintain stable conditions in the leaching process, and to use the leaching reagents efficiently, an analysis step is used to monitor the concentration of thiocyanate in the cyanidation step. This value has been found to be directly related to the rate of addition of the lead compound in the pre-leaching or leaching step. Further, the rate of addition of lead compound is also directly related to both the time required for, and the efficiency of, the cyanidation step. By establishing a target value, and a preferred range, for the thiocyanate concentration based on the properties of the ore being processed, optimal extraction conditions can be established in the leaching process and maintained by monitoring the thiocyanate concentration.

  • Patent number: 6982025
Abstract: An adjustable resilient blade support for use in the forming section of a papermaking machine. The blade support is adjustable, both to allow the attached blade to be moved from a position where it is out of contact to a position where it is pressed into contact with the adjacent forming fabric, and to permit adjustment of the blade orientation relative to the surface of the forming fabric. The blade support is also resilient, and thus allows the blade to respond to transient localized changes in the path of the forming fabric with which it is in contact. The adjustable resilient blade support of this invention is thus of use in an open surface forming section, and also is of use in forming sections in which two forming fabrics are used.
