  • Patent number: 7028336
Abstract: The present invention provides a firewall that achieves maximum network security and maximum user convenience. The firewall employs “envoys” that exhibit the security robustness of prior-art proxies and the transparency and ease-of-use of prior-art packet filters, combining the best of both worlds. No traffic can pass through the firewall unless the firewall has established an envoy for that traffic. Both connection-oriented (e.g., TCP) and connectionless (e.g., UDP-based) services may be handled using envoys. Establishment of an envoy may be subjected to a myriad of tests to “qualify” the user, the requested communication, or both. Therefore, a high level of security may be achieved. The usual added burden of prior-art proxy systems is avoided in such a way as to achieve fall transparency-the user can use standard applications and need not even know of the existence of the firewall. To achieve full transparency, the firewall is configured as two or more sets of virtual hosts.

  • Patent number: 7026550
Abstract: A safety cap for an electrical outlet having an adhesive section can be attached to a standard outlet cover. Alternately, an outlet cover including two slidable plates including a spring or spring groove can be used to prevent access to the outlet by a child. An elongated member on one plate is used to contact a spring on the other plate. Alternately, the elongated member can fit into a spring groove to bias the plates apart into the closed position. Locking pins can be used to lock the plates onto an aperture at the base of a plug's power prong. Additionally, a recess around each electrical outlet can mate with a respective lip of a plug to provide an interlocking interface between the plug and outlet cover to prevent a child from being able to insert a metal object between the plug and the faceplate.

  • Patent number: 7027389
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus to determine the state of a communications link between two nodes in a network. Typically, each node will have an RTT-based value to use, a packets sent counter, and a threshold number to use against the packet sent counter to determine if there is a problem with their communications link. Using the RTT value makes the failure detection sensitive to the actual state of the communications link at any particular time; it also allows the failure detection algorithm to take into account the bursty nature of nodes in a packetized network connection. For each packet received from a non-local node, the local node sets the counter to 0 and starts a new RTT-based time interval. The local node then increments the counter only once, regardless of how many packets it sends to the non-local node, during the RTT-based time interval. Once the time interval is up, the counter is incremented for each packet sent.

  • Patent number: 7023911
Abstract: Method and apparatus for altering a round trip delay measurement in a multiple subscriber carrier pair gain system to accurately position echo cancellation where the overall delay is measured by the near end modem and when this measurement is made, it is detected to alter local delays by bypassing filters and buffers to momentarily shorten the overall delay until the measurement is completed. Alternatively, the return signal is interrupted and the round trip delay response is simulated when a round trip delay measurement is being made. In this manner, the simulated signal is received at the originating end and used for delay measurement resulting in a shorter delay being measured.

  • Patent number: 7019368
Abstract: A transistor formed on a semiconductor substrate of a first conductivity type in a well formed in the substrate and doped with the first conductivity type to an impurity level higher than that of the substrate. A drain doped to a second conductivity type opposite to said first conductivity type is disposed in the well. A pair of opposed source regions doped to the second conductivity type are disposed in the well and are electrically coupled together. They are separated from opposing outer edges of the drain region by channels. A pair of gates are electrically coupled together and disposed above and insulated from the channels. A region of the well disposed below the drain is doped so as to reduce capacitive coupling between the drain and the well.

  • Patent number: 7016309
Abstract: A method and apparatus for accurately calculating packet loss along a communication channel using data in a pair of measuring packets is disclosed. The invention calculates packet loss between a first and second node over a communication circuit. A first known quantity of packets is communicated from the first node to the second node at a first known time. A first actual count of packets received by the second node from the first known quantity of packets is then determined. A second known quantity of packets is then communicated from the first node to the second node at a second known time. A second actual count of packets received by the second node from the second known quantity of packets is then determined. The difference between the first known quantity of packets communicated at the first known time and the second known quantity of packets communicated at the second known time is calculated to obtain a value for “packets sent”.
