Abstract: A large volume metallic composite container consisting essentially of a plurality of metal plates welded end-to-end, each said metal plate having a stainless metallic layer on the periphery of at least one side thereof and on the ends thereof and a heat-sensitive anti-corrosion coating consisting essentially of a thermoplastic resin on at least one side of each said metal plate and overlapping said stainless metallic layers over a length of at least about 10 mm and at least about 10 mm from the weld used to weld the plates together. The process of making of such containers is also disclosed.

Abstract: A multi-wire conduit dam consisting of a molded strip of closed cell sponge rubber or equivalent that is shaped like a timing belt having recesses on at least one side with the recessed surface coated with adhesive or double sided adhesive tape after wires are placed in the recesses. The strip is then rolled together to form a cylindrical dam which may then be installed in an appropriate conduit.

Abstract: A fire-resistant polycarbonate composition comprising a polycarbonate and for each one thousand parts by weight thereof from about 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of a salt of the formula: ##STR1## in which R is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl radical or an aryl radical, unsubstituted or substituted aryl radical and M is an alkali metal selected from Li, Na, or K.

Abstract: A rim construction for mounting a tire which has a base member in which a groove or gutter has been machined to a fine tolerance. A lock ring with a semicircular projection is formed by cold extruding steel to a matching fine tolerance of the gutter so that when the lock ring semicircular portion or projection is place in the gutter, uniform maximum engagement occurs between the gutter surface and the semicircular lock ring projection surface.

Abstract: An asphaltic composition comprising an asphalt admixed with an aggregate and at the interface between said asphalt and said aggregate the reaction product of an amine antistrip and an acid salt in an amount sufficient to bind said asphalt to said aggregate; said acidic salt being a divalent or trivalent metal salt of an inorganic acid.

Abstract: A process is described for the production of bearings for sustaining high loads, the bearings having indentations filled with soft overlay alloy. The indentations are produced by peening or embossing. The peening is preferably performed with rounded ceramic shot of 0.25 to 0.5 mm diameter. Indentations should preferably be between 0.01 and 0.05 mm deep. In one embodiment a bearing is described having alloy comprising a steel-backed aluminium-based bearing alloy having a composition of, for example, Al-Sn2O-Cul and a soft Pb-Sn10 overlay there also being an interlayer of 3 to 5 .mu.m of nickel between the bearing alloy and the overlay. Bearing surfaces having a continuous overlay or a composite surface comprising randomly-shaped areas of bearing alloy and overlay may be produced.

Abstract: A digitizer for a gravity meter having a rotatable gradient readout dial and a null indicator, the digitizer comprising a shaft position sensor attached to the readout dial for providing a digital output signal representation of clockwise and counterclockwise rotation of the readout dial during nulling of said indicator, a microprocessor coupled to the shaft position sensor for receiving and storing the sensor digital output signal representation and means in the microprocessor for analyzing the stored digital output signals from the shaft position sensor and producing and storing a digitized output signal representing the gravity in the form of the average position of the readout dial on the gravity meter.

Abstract: The process of making a wet or dry dispersion containing anthraquinone suitable for use in the alkaline digestion of wood comprising cyclizing ortho-benzoylbenzoic acid at a temperature of about 150.degree. to 180.degree. C. and at an absolute pressure between about 5 and 40 millibars in the presence of between about 0.05 to 2 parts by weight of sulfuric acid, having a concentration of at least about 95%, per part by weight of ortho-benzoylbenzoic acid to form a reaction mixture containing anthraquinone, bringing the reaction mixture to a pH of at least about 7 by addition thereto at a temperature between about ambient temperature and 100.degree. C. of an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide containing between about 10% to 40% hydroxide by weight, and then forming a dispersion thereof and using such dispersion in the alkaline digestion of wood.

Abstract: A process for manufacturing silver catalysts deposited on a porous refractory support, comprising impregnating a refractory support with a portion of the silver required for the catalyst by immersing the support in a practically anhydrous solution of an organic carboxylic acid salt of silver in an organic liquid which complexes the silver ions, removing excess organic liquid from the support without causing the deposition of metallic silver thereon; depositing the remainder of the silver and at least one promoter selected from cesium, rubidium, or potassium on the support modified by the first silver deposit by immersing said modified support in a practically anhydrous solution of an organic carboxylic acid salt of silver in an organic liquid which complexes the silver ions, said organic liquid containing in the solubilized state, a salt of at least one of the promoters, before transformation of the silver deposited into metallic silver.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of a vinyl chloride polymer latex having particles with a mean diameter between about 0.2 and 0.8 .mu.m and containing at least one organosoluble polymerization initiator comprising dispersing in an aqueous reaction medium also containing parabenzoquinone, at least one monomer, at least one anionic emulsifier and optionally at least one nonionic emulsifier, and from about 0.004 to 0.16% by weight, with respect to said at least one monomer, of said initiator expressed in terms of active oxygen, polymerizing said at least one monomer at a desired polymerization temperature, .theta..sub.1, and continuously adding parabenzoquinone to said aqueous reaction medium during the polymerization when the temperature .theta..sub.2 of the reaction medium is such that the difference .theta..sub.2 -.theta..sub.1 exceeds a value from 0.degree. to +5.degree. C.

Abstract: A tool for cutting an annular groove on the interior of a substantially cylindrical surface comprising a primary body having a pointed base for anchoring the cutting tool and a portion for being grasped and rotated by a power source, at least one groove cutting assembly attached to and extending horizontally from the primary body towards the internal cylindrical surface, and means coupled to said primary body and moveably spaced from the cutting assembly for selectively urging a portion of the cutting assembly outwardly a predetermined distance thereby enabling a groove of predetermined depth to be made on the interior of the interior cylindrical surface when the primary body is rotated.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for attaching an acetabular cup to an acetabulum wherein the cup is rigidly attached to the acetabulum in a spaced relationship and the space between the cup and the acetabulum is filled with a flowable cement under pressure whereby a portion of the medullary bone is partially filled with cement and that pressure maintained until the flowable cement hardens thereby retaining the cup in the acetabulum in a fixed relationship.

Abstract: The present invention comprises a machine having a fixed portion and fitted with a plurality of pneumatic cylinders and pistons, at least one of said cylinders and pistons is activated by a nominal-pressure supply, and which at least one cylinder and piston forms part of a subassembly which moves with respect to the fixed portion of the machine. There is a counter-pressure system for each working phase of the subassembly cylinder, including means for counteracting the nominal-pressure supply to reduce jerking movements of the subassembly during operation. Also a speed-control unit which has a variable throttling valve and an anti-return valve is affixed to the fixed portion of the machine separated from the movable subassembly. Flexible lines are connected between the subassembly cylinder and the speed-control unit so that the mass of the movable subassembly is reduced to further reduce the jerking motion of the subassembly.
