Abstract: A process for improved remediation of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon and/or polychlorinated hydrocarbon contaminated solid materials by integrated chemical/biological treatment comprising contacting the polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon and/or polychlorinated hydrocarbon for chemical treatment with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of ferrous ion in liquid solution at a temperature of about 10.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C., oxidizing the polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon materials and/or polychlorinated hydrocarbon materials and producing more readily biodegradable hydrocarbon product materials, and then biodigesting the product materials by aerobic and/or anaerobic biodigestion. • Patent number: 5607418
Abstract: An implantable drug delivery apparatus including a housing that has a housing chamber. An outer deformable body having a reserve chamber is mounted within the housing chamber. An inner deformable body having a dispensing chamber is mounted within the reserve chamber. A dispensing valve is actuated to an open position to allow a fluidic drug to flow from the dispensing chamber, through the dispensing valve and through a catheter into a body of a patient. The fluidic drug is discharged from the dispensing chamber at a dispensing mass flowrate which is greater than a refilling mass flowrate of the fluidic drug passing from the reserve chamber to the dispensing chamber, when the dispensing valve is in an open position.

  • Patent number: 5608319
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring magnetic fields with a magnetically sensitive probe which is introduced into a magnetic field and which transmits a measuring signal to a measuring device for evaluation. After activating the measuring device, a zero point is measured and automatically set and a correction value is calculated and stored. The probe is introduced into the magnetic field and the polarity of the magnetic field automatically determined. A peak value of a plurality of measured values is automatically stored and the measurement range of the device is automatically adjusted to the range of the magnetic field. Thereafter, the measured values are read out, the probe is removed from the magnetic field and the device is switched off.

  • Patent number: 5601215
Abstract: A closure for a container. The closure has a lower closure element and a closure cap which can be placed on the lower closure element. The lower closure element can be connected to the opening of a container by a base element having a contact flange that rests on the inner wall of the container against a contact face formed in the area of the opening of the container. One or several locking projections are disposed on the base element in the axial direction of the container closure and at a distance from the contact flange. The locking projection extends over the rim of the opening, so that the lower container element is held axially immovable in the container. Secure fixing of the container closure in the opening of the container is possible by providing the base element with one or a plurality of stops which come into operational connection with counter-elements of the container and prevent turning of the base element in the opening.

  • Patent number: 5589073
Abstract: A system and method for removing asbestos and other hazardous solids from a slurry collected during removal of coatings from pipelines, equipment and other structures. The slurry is collected in a collection pan that is attached to a shroud of a hydrocleaning machine. Contaminated air and the slurry is transferred to a vacuum hopper. The contaminated air is removed from the vacuum hopper. The contaminated air is filtered to remove solid particles. Solid particles are preferably separated from the slurry by passing the slurry through various stages of filters. Pumps are used to transfer the slurry from the collection pan through the filter stages. A first flocculent is injected into the slurry to coagulate the solid particles into individual masses. A second flocculent can be injected into the slurry in order to coagulate a majority of the remaining solid particles. The coagulated masses of solid particles are removed by passing the slurry through a weir or a screen shaker.

  • Patent number: 5586447
Abstract: A process for controlling an absorbent-refrigerant solution concentration in an absorption cooling system to prevent crystallization of the solution in which the crystallization temperature of the absorbent-refrigerant solution is calculated and the temperature of an absorbent-enriched solution, or strong solution, from the absorption unit heat exchanger is measured. Based upon the crystallization temperature and the measured absorbent-enriched solution temperature, the concentration of the absorbent is calculated using an iteration algorithm. Based upon the calculated concentration of absorbent in the absorbent-enriched solution, the concentration of the absorbent-enriched solution is adjusted by adjusting the heat input to the absorption system generator to prevent crystallization of the absorbent.

  • Patent number: 5584406
Abstract: A rack frame with vertical supports, which can be partially closed by wall elements, wherein the wall elements are embodied as panel elements with beveled edges and are fastened or can be fastened by fasteners to respectively two adjoining supports. The wall elements can be fastened on the supports of the rack frame in a simple manner at an arbitrary height. The two supports each have a fastening bar extending parallel to the wall element, on which U-shaped fastening elements can be adjusted and fixed in place. The wall elements can be bolted together with the fastening elements, and the edges of the wall elements can be inserted into elongated slots of the supports.

  • Patent number: 5582256
Abstract: A manually displaceable implement for ground treatment comprising a housing (1), a rotor drum (2) rotatably maintained therein and driven by a motor, a connecting piece (3) and height-adjustable running wheels (5). In the non-operating state, the running wheels (5) are lowered, so that the rotor drum (2) is raised off the ground (B) to be treated. In the process, at least one running wheel (5) rests against a stop disposed on the housing (1) and is blocked in this manner. The implement for ground treatment is secured by this blocking means (10) and does not make any uncontrolled movements, even if the drive motor of the rotor drum (2) is switched on.

  • Patent number: 5583789
Abstract: A local integral method for computing molecular diffusion and chemical reaction within a material wherein shape and time evolution values of one or more material surfaces are computed, and a rate of stretch of each material surface is determined as a function of time. A set of ordinary differential equations are solved at a multiplicity of points on the material surface. The ordinary differential equations are reduced from and represent an approximation of a more complex and complete set of governing partial differential equations. One or more conserved scalars are tracked and conserved scalar values and a gradient of the conserved scalars are determined. A rate of change from the gradient of the conserved scalars is also determined. A mass fraction and a reaction rate of each chemical species of the material is correlated as a function of determined conserved scalar values and a determined gradient of the conserved scalars.

  • Patent number: 5582353
Abstract: A cylindrical cutter body with base elements fitted to a cutter body surface. The base elements project out from the cutter body surface. A cutter holder carrying at least one cutter plate can be attached to each base element. This invention increases the lifetime of the cutter body, while at the same time simplifying replacement of the cutter holder because the cutter holder is connected to the base element by a rotational fitting, the axis of the rotational fitting being parallel or inclined to the rotational axis of the cutter body, and rotational distortion between the cutter holder and the base element is restricted in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the cutter body by a stop on the cutter holder or base element.

  • Patent number: 5582730
Abstract: A filter unit for brewing filtered coffee which uses basket filter bags. A special design of the filter openings of the basket filter assures an even discharge of the brewed coffee. Hot water is poured into a special distributing cover which is placed on the filter basket. Suitably designed distributing holes cause the hot water to form drops and distribute the hot water evenly over the entire amount of powdered coffee in the basket filter bag. The brewing and filtering operation is performed continuously and evenly because of these distributing holes, and thus the quality of the filtered coffee is improved.
