  • Patent number: 4244008
Abstract: In magnetic recording devices, such as floppy disk drives, operational difficulties in the faithful reproduction of recorded data include peak shifting. The invention overcomes these difficulties by introducing a read back compensation circuit comprising a frequency equalizer which favorably amplifies a certain harmonic of the original read signal. In a recording device using a modified frequency modulation encoding scheme (MFM), for instance, this harmonic would be the second harmonic. In order to minimize the effect of circuit paramater variations the frequency equalizer may be split between two circuits, specifically between the read filter network and the read differentiating network. First switching means connected to the filter network and second switching means connected to the differentiating network are arranged as to change the damping factor and the frequency of the filter and differentiating network.

  • Patent number: 4239233
Abstract: A firearm training device comprises a combat target mounted at one end of a frame, an adjustabe inclined slide and a slingshot mechanism mounted within the frame. When the device is activated, a heavy ball is rolled down the slide. If the user hits the target with wax bullets before the ball reaches the end of the slide, it releases a trigger mechanism which blocks the further progress of the ball down the slide. If the ball reaches the bottom of the slide, prior to the bullet striking the target, the ball activates a trigger mechanism which releases the slingshot mechanism propelling a projectile such as a rubber ball at the trainee with sufficient force to effectively punish him. The device thus gives added impetus to the trainee's efforts to fire quickly and accurately.

  • Patent number: 4210580
Abstract: A process for the separation and isolation of AHF and fibronectin from blood plasma by adding a sulfated mucopolysaccharide to blood plasma to a concentration of 0.15-0.25 mg/ml of plasma, cooling the plasma to 0.degree. C.-15.degree. C. centrifuging the plasma to isolate a precipitate which forms and then removing the AHF-rich supernatant liquid from the precipitate. The precipitate is washed in a slightly basic solution of dilute salts and then dissolved in a buffered solution of chaotrophic salts of the Hofmeister series having an ionic strength from 0.01-1. Fibronectin is then separated, by chromotographic means, from the dissolved precipitate, which contains fibronectin and fibrinogen. In a preferred embodiment, 0.20 mg of sodium heparin per milliliter of human plasma is employed with the heparinized plasma solution cooled for 3 hours at a temperature of 2.degree. C.-4.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 4191139
Abstract: An engine producing combustion of a fuel by compression rather than ignition comprises a conventional engine cylinder having a pair of opposed secondary cylinders mounted side-by-side on the upper portion of the cylinder chamber. The secondary cylinders are driven by a cam arrangement in a direction transverse to the action of the main engine cylinder and at predetermined synchronized time intervals. The secondary pistons operate in conjunction with the main piston entering the respective compression chambers on the 0.degree. top dead center system of the main piston to produce combustion by compression thereby eliminating the need for electric ignition and providing more power per cylinder. As further advantage, there is less pollution due to more efficient combustion in an arrangement which also eliminates the necessity for engine tuneups.

  • Patent number: 4154150
Abstract: A chimney closure is disclosed having a damper which consists of a pair of contiguous generally coplanar leaf sections pivotally mounted over the open end of a chimney. The leaf sections may be pivoted back and forth with respect to the plane of the chimney opening between generally horizontal and vertical positions. One of the leaf sections opens and closes approximately half of the chimney opening. The area of the other leaf section is less than that of the one section and, therefore, it only partially obstructs the remaining part of the opening when the one section is closed. The damper is carried by a casing which surrounds the chimney opening.
