Abstract: An improved process is disclosed for photodynamically inactivating viruses in red blood cell containing compositions by adding vitamin E or a derivative thereof, such as Trolox, to the red blood cell and photosensitizer containing composition prior to irradiation. Addition of vitamin E or derivative thereof is protective of the red blood cells but not the viruses to be inactivated. Cells irradiated in this manner exhibit reduced leakage of potassium ion, and reduced loss of negative charges from the cell membrane compared to cells treated in the absence of vitamin E or derivative. Red blood cells sterilized by this method are better preserved during storage and their life-time in the circulation in vivo is enhanced.

Abstract: Process for the preparation of polyhalogenated benzotrifluorides, benzotrichlorides and benzoyl chlorides and new trihalogeno-benzotrichlorides and -benzoyl chloridesPolyhalogenated benzotrifluorides can be reacted with chlorides from the series of Friedel-Crafts catalysts to give the corresponding benzotrichlorides, which can be hydrolysed by water in the presence of iron(III) chloride to give the corresponding benzoyl chlorides. These are suitable as intermediate products for the preparation of active compounds for medicaments and feed additives.
Abstract: The present invention concerns the product produced by inactivating extracellular or intracellular pathogenic virus in a biological composition without incurring substantial disruption or inactivation of cells and without significant loss of labile proteins or other valuable biological components also contained therein, the inactivation process comprising subjecting said composition to a virucidally effective amount of irradiation in the presence of (a) a mixture of a compound that quenches type I photodynamic reactions and a compound that quenches type II photodynamic reactions or (b) a bifunctional compound that is capable of quenching both type I and type II reactions, to thereby inactivate said virus while retaining functionality of said composition. The composition is advantageously subjected to the irradiation and the mixture of compounds or bifunctional compound in the presence of an irradiation sensitizer.

Abstract: Articles having a diamond-like protective film formed thereon, each comprising a substrate of a material selected from the group consisting of alloys containing at least Co, Ni, or Fe, ceramics, and glass and which has only a slight affinity for a diamond-like thin film, an Mo film formed on the substrate, and a diamond-like thin film formed further thereon. Such articles are manufactured by a method which comprises holding a grid made of Mo close to the surface of the substrate, bombarding the grid and the substrate surface with a bombarding gas consisting of inert gas atoms of Ar or the like, thereby removing contaminants from the surface and depositing Mo atoms on the substrate surface to form an Mo film thereon, ionizing a low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon or a feed gas capable of producing a low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon upon decomposition or reaction, and then accelerating the resulting ions and depositing the same on the Mo film to form a diamond-like film thereon.
Abstract: N-Substituted cyclic imides are obtained by reacting a cyclic acid anhydride with an amine in the presence of a solvent and an acid catalyst at 80.degree. to 200.degree. C. and with removal of the water formed, it being particularly advantageous to carry out this reaction in the presence of a stabilizer and an inert, dipolar aprotic cosolvent, optionally to add an inert organic solvent of low or zero polarity to the reaction mixture present after the reaction, to add a non-aqueous base in an amount of 0.5 to 50% by weight, based on the cyclic anhydride of the formula (II) used, and to separate off the precipitate formed to give a filtrate containing the N-substituted cyclic imide.

Abstract: An apparatus for the mechanical cleaning of liquids, especially cooling water delivered from a heat exchanger and flowing in a pipeline (10), with a rotationally symmetrical, conical sieve (12) of substantially the size of the pipe diameter, as well as a coaxial suction device (20) which is disposed on the upstream side of the sieve, is mounted for rotation continuously or with interruptions for the duration of a cleaning interval, and during the cleaning interval sucks bit by bit the entire surface of the sieve (12) on the upstream side, the sieve (12) being divided into areas, the intake nozzle (22) of the suction device (20) can cover each area, and in each area of the actual sieve surface and of the suction device there is a cavity for the temporary accommodation of contaminants, the sieve (12) being divided on its upstream side by substantially radial barriers (36) into individual sectors forming the areas, the intake nozzle (22) of the suction device (20) has such a shape that, at the moment in which th
Abstract: A process is presented for transfusing cells which have been sterilized with radiation and a quencher of type I and type II photodynamic reactions. The cells are removed from a donor and exposed to virucidally effective amount of radiation in the presence of a quencher of type I and type II reactions, or a mixture of a quencher for type I reactions and a quencher of type II reactions. Subsequently, the sterilized cell containing fraction is returned to the donor.

Abstract: Method for the quality-controlled treatment of surfaces with a radiation-cured surface treatment, in which a finishing formulation is applied to the surface and is polymerically crosslinked under the effect of radiation. To enable the quality control to be conducted non-destructively and at reduced cost, it is proposed that the finishing formulation contains a proton-affinitive indicator substance analyzable by ion mobility spectroscopy and that the indicator substance escaping from the printed or coated surface after the radiation curing is analyzed by means of ion mobility spectroscopy.
Abstract: A latent image printing method and apparatus uses a substrate with one main surface having a covering comprising one of a first pair of a color developer and color former dye defining a background color in conjunction with the one main surface, wherein the color developer and the color former dye react when mixed to produce a first spectral response which is visible relative to the background color and a continuous coating over the covering which is non-porous with respect to the other of the pair and solvent-resistant to the other of the pair. The coating above selected portions of the covering corresponding to a desired latent image is removed.
