Abstract: The present invention relates to DNA isolated from Arachis hypogaea which encodes or hybridizes to DNA which encodes a protein that repels pests. Such DNA is useful in the transformation of vectors, host organisms and plants and for the production of plants which exhibit an increased resistance to pests.

Abstract: A surface polishing method comprises allowing a holder to hold a flat sheet-like workpiece, placing a pad tape in a location opposite to the holder, the pad tape consisting of a tape substrate and grains bonded to the substrate surface, supplying free grains between the holder and the pad tape, and rotating the holder and/or a mechanism holding the tape, thereby causing the free grains to polish the workpiece. An apparatus for practicing the method comprises a holder capable of holding a flat sheet-like workpiece, a tape holding mechanism located opposite to the surface of the workpiece and carrying a pad tape which consists of a tape substrate and grains bonded to the substrate, a rotary mechanism for rotating the holder and/or the tape holding mechanism, and an abrasive supplying mechanism for supplying free grains between the surface of the workpiece and the pad tape.

Abstract: The sugar alcohols mentioned as title compounds can be prepared from the corresponding sugar in equimolar amounts by catalytic hydrogenation with hydrogen in aqueous solution, the hydrogenation being carried out continuously at an H.sub.2 pressure of 100 to 400 bar and a reaction temperature of 20 to 80.degree. C. using fixed-bed support-free molded bodies composed of compacted powders of alloys of the elements of the iron subgroup of group VIIIA of the periodic table with elements of group IVB and VA. The molded bodies have a compressive strength of 20 to 220 N and an internal surface area of 10 to 95 m.sup.2 /g.
Abstract: A stilbene synthase gene. More particularly, a stilbene synthase gene in which the stilbene synthase is resveratrol synthase. Also more particularly a stilbene synthase gene which is obtained from groundnut (Arachis hypogaea). Furthermore a stilbene synthase gene, corresponding to the stilbene synthase gene which is contained in the plasmid pGS 828.1, and DNA sequences acting in essentially the same say. Still further, a stilbene synthase gene unit which comprises approximately 6,700 base pairs and exhibits 3 EcoRI, 3 HindIII and 1 PstI cleavage sites, and which can be obtained by partial cleavage of the plasmid PGS 828.1 using EcoRI and HindIII, or from plasmid pGS 828.1 using SstI and PvuII.
