  • Patent number: 5311707
Abstract: A joint between an upper wall part and a lower wall part of a modular tub/shower unit includes a recessed band adjacent to but spaced from the lowermost edge of the upper wall part. A further band is recessed at the uppermost edge of the lower wall part with the vertical height of that band being greater than the vertical height of the recessed band in the upper wall part and greater than a band at the lowermost edge which is not recessed. The lowermost band of the upper wall part is then adhesively attached to the uppermost edge and a part of the recessed band of the part by a double sided adhesive tape the covering of which is pulled through the gap between these parts. The adhesive tape provides the only sealant necessary for waterproofing the joint and provides the only structural strength necessary. The groove above the lowermost band of the upper wall part allows the upper wall part to be maneuvered into the required position by finger engagement into the groove.

  • Patent number: 5273967
Abstract: A process is described for the control of the development of mosquitos in a body of water, by spreading on the body of water a particulate carbohydrate compound. The carbohydrate compound may be a given compound that forms a hydrophillic gum-like layer once spread on the surface of the water. The gum-like layer prevents the development of mosquito in the larvae and pupae stages. It is also believed to inhibit the laying of eggs on the water surface by the female mosquito. The layer found is environmentally safe as the carbohydrates used are common in food products.

  • Patent number: 5261290
Abstract: A control lever system for actuating the hydraulic pump of a hydrostatic transmission system of an agricultural vehicle includes a lever having a hand grip portion for actuation by the operator. The lever passes through an elongate slot in a console surface to control its movement. A lower end of the lever is connected to the pump. A friction resistance system is applied to the lever to generate a frictional force resisting the natural restoring force of the pump tending to move to the neutral postion. The friction resistance is applied only over the length of the slot relating to the forward movement of the pump so that there is no action at the neutral position or in reverse. The friction resistance includes a friction multiplier generated by a sub-lever portion pivotally mounted on the lever and biased by spring action when in contact with an abutment member to pinch a friction band so that the friction force generated by the band is greater than the spring action.

  • Patent number: 5262639
Abstract: The invention provides a monitor for monitoring the condition of fibre optic communication cables. The system employs one or more of the optical fibres of a cable to monitor the cable structure for damage or kinks. By using two separate laser sources and simultaneously monitoring the optical losses at two distinct and separate wavelengths, the loss signature of the monitored fibre is determined, analyzed and related to the mechanical condition of the cable structure. To monitor splice points for moisture, a special optical splice sensor unit detects any penetration of water into the splice and transmits a coded alarm signal over the monitored fibre to the optical receiver. Every splice location is assigned a unique sensor code. The optical splice sensor is driven by moisture detection cell, which forms a single cell water activated battery. Water entering the monitored splice closure wets the tape, which activates the cell.

  • Patent number: 5255501
Abstract: A baler of the type for forming cylindrical bales is improved by the use of a combine type pickup which more effectively lifts the crop from the ground for insertion into the main baler housing. Between a feeder housing of the combine type pickup and the main baler housing is provided a transportation section under which is provided a belt to ensure that any material falling from the transportation section is caught by the belt and carried rearwardly for collection in an auger and fan assembly. The auger and fan assembly provides a low pressure within the baler housing which is substantially fully enclosed so that all material is kept within the baler and prevented from escaping. The collected material in the fan is carried through a duct to a discharge cyclone dropping the material back into the transportation section for carrying into the baler housing for baling.
