Patent number: 5587181Abstract: A ferromagnetic cable insertion tube is cantilevered from a polymeric conduit extruder and separates an electrical and/or optical cable being pulled through the conduit from the inner surface of the conduit until it has solidified. A d.c. current source is applied to a coil surrounding the cable insertion tube upstream or downstream of the extruder so as to induce a magnetic flux in the tube and create a north pole at the downstream free end of the tube and a south pole at the upstream free end of the tube. An array of magnets is assembled about the insertion tube at the downstream free end or north pole thereof. The magnets are arranged with their north poles confronting the north pole of the insertion tube so that the repulsive forces between the like poles magnetically levitate the free end of the insertion tube and keep it from sagging into contact with the extruded conduit.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1994Date of Patent: December 24, 1996Assignee: Southwire CompanyInventors: Steve C. Patent number: 5418333Abstract: A method of manufacture and a resultant cable structure of elliptical stranded cable which optimizes the use of existing conventional stranding machines. In accordance with the present invention, one or more layers of shaped, non-circular, wires are interposed to provide support between the inner core of substantially round wires each having essentially the same diameter and the outer layer of round wires of different diameters, which outer layer includes round wires of different diameters which are arranged to provide the minor and major axes of the elliptical cable. The shaped wires are preferably trapezoidal in shape. Alternatively, the shaped wires may be arcuately shaped elliptical wires subtending an angle determined by dividing 360.degree. by the number of shaped wires (for example, 30.degree. for a twelve wire layer) and having an aspect ratio (ratio of major axis X dimension to minor axis Y dimension) sufficient to provide support between the inner core and outer layer of round wires.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1993Date of Patent: May 23, 1995Assignee: Southwire CompanyInventor: Eugene T. Patent number: 5343934Abstract: Multiple pairs of pinch rolls are used to advance a rod product along a pathway following a continuously casting and rolling system. Each pinch roll pair exerts a force normal to the rod of less than the amount necessary to substantially degrade the yield strength characteristics of the finished rod. Multiple driven pinch roll pairs cooperate to advance the rod by compressive engagement and accomplish the work of one or two pairs of pinch rolls to minimize work hardening and/or plastic deformation, which can result in an increase in yield strength. Yield strength characteristics are thus improved while the continuous rod product is still advanced and guided at very high speed along a pathway from a horizontal to a vertical direction.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1993Date of Patent: September 6, 1994Assignee: Southwire CompanyInventor: Thomas N. Wilson

Patent number: 5318630Abstract: A wire tensioning device having a guide for taking up an advancing wire having slack and a brake for applying a braking force to the guides. In a wire insulating system, a wire from a supply reel or spool is passed to a take-up reel or spool, through intervening components, which accumulate, tension and apply insulation to the advancing wire. The wire is first passed from the supply reel to an accumulating device in the form of a vertical accumulator or a flipper payout. From there it is passed through the device of the present invention having a plurality of rotatable sheaves or pulleys about which the advancing wire is trained. A braking force is applied to one of the sheaves by an air brake to apply a tensioning force. From the tensioning device, the wire is fed through an insulation-applying crosshead device and then on to a take-up reel or spool.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1992Date of Patent: June 7, 1994Assignee: Southwire CompanyInventors: Mickey E.
