  • Patent number: 4796832
Abstract: A jumbo roll of toilet tissue wherein the initial section of the roll is perforated and the remainder is unperforated is dispensed from a dispenser having, in addition to a first spindle for supporting the jumbo roll, a second spindle for receiving the preceding roll of tissue after most of the tissue has been consumed. The spindles are secured by means that discourage pilferage of the rolls but permit access to them by an attendant when the rolls are changed. The second spindle is readily detachable and can be mounted on either side of the dispenser.

  • Patent number: 4718978
Abstract: A partially-oxidized spent pulping liquor is produced which is added to unoxidized strong spent pulping liquor prior, during, or subsequent to concentration to form a novel partially-oxidized, concentrated, high total solids spent pulping liquor. This novel, partially-oxidized, concentrated spent liquor is capable of being combusted in a spent liquor recovery furnace without the addition of auxiliary heating fuel with a resultant increase in the effective capacity of that furnace.

  • Patent number: 4689119
Abstract: A system of treating web material wherein the web is transported within a differential relative velocity nip defined by a web support surface and a pick-up member having voids, therein and having a relative velocity differing from that of the support surface at the nip location. Substantially simultaneously with the web treatment the web is applied to the pick-up member with the web impressed into the voids to lock the web against movement relative to the pick-up member.

  • Patent number: 4644045
Abstract: Spunbonded nonwoven webs having excellent properties, particularly softness, can be made from linear low density polyethylene having a critical combination of certain key properties. These properties are percent crystallinity, cone die melt flow, die swell, relation of die swell to melt index, and polymer uniformity. The polyethylene is extruded through a spinneret at a temperature between about 185.degree. and 215.degree. C. and drawn through an air gun to form the spunbonded web.

  • Patent number: 4637858
Abstract: This invention is a process for recovering sodium hydroxide directly from black liquor. The process involves pyrolyzing the black liquor in the absence of oxygen to produce a product containing sodium carbide, and hydrolyzing the sodium carbide to form sodium hydroxide. The pyrolysis is carried out at about 4000.degree. F. using radiant energy.

  • Patent number: 4582555
Abstract: This invention is an improved heatseal die that forms superior airtight seals. The die has opposed die faces, with one die face having longitudinal lands and the other die face having grooves for receiving the lands. The lands are truncated and the depth of the grooves is greater than the height of the lands. As a result, the force applied by the lands and grooves is applied entirely as a shearing force, which forms the superior heatseals.

  • Patent number: 4547349
Abstract: The invention is an improved lime slaker in which the lime is combined with the slaking liquor in a vertical conduit which extends below the level of the liquor in the slaker vessel. The slaking liquor is introduced into the conduit at a high velocity tangential to the interior surface of the conduit to flush the lime into the vessel. The slaker includes a vertical vent pipe that extends through the bottom of the vessel. In a preferred embodiment, the inlet of the vent pipe is surrounded by an entrainment separator. Removable covers permit convenient access for inspection and cleaning of the conduit and the vent pipe.

  • Patent number: 4539259
Abstract: The stiffness and deadfold properties of laminates used to make toothpaste tubes are improved by including a layer of high density polyethylene as one of the layers of the laminate. The use of high density polyethylene obviates the need to use a layer of paper or thick foil to provide stiffness and deadfold. The laminates containing high density polyethylene also have excellent strength and other properties which make them especially suitable for making tubes used to package toothpaste or other substances.

  • Patent number: 4310383
Abstract: Lignocellulose is treated with an alkaline pretreatment liquor containing anthraquinone or other pretreatment agent in a continuous process in which the lignocellulose and pretreatment liquor flow countercurrently. The pretreatment agent is substantially soluble in the pretreatment liquor introduced into the pretreatment zone and is substantially insoluble in the pretreatment liquor withdrawn from the pretreatment zone, with the result that the pretreatment agent is effectively recycled within the pretreatment zone.

  • Patent number: 4188441
Abstract: Flexible packaging films of high density polyethylene capable of forming easily openable heatseals can be made by coextruding a layer of the high density polyethylene adjacent to a layer of a blend of an ionomer and a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate or an ester of acrylic and or methacrylic acid. Packages made from the films by forming a blend-to-blend heatseal can be opened by a force between one and five pounds per inch width.

  • Patent number: 4177267
Abstract: A method of enhancing tissue penetration of physiologically active steroidal agents by conjointly applying them to the tissue with dimethyl sulfoxide. Penetration of the skin and the mucous membranes of the body cavities by these agents may be enhanced by conjoint application of such agents and dimethyl sulfoxide directly to such membranes. Preferably, for penetration of these agents through the skin compositions of DMSO at concentrations of 50% and above are employed and for penetration through mucous membranes, compositions including DMSO at concentrations of 10% and above are employed. Steroidal agents may be advantageously administered by injection with DMSO in concentrations preferably up to 20% by weight to enhance penetration of internal tissue membrane barriers to achieve better distribution of these agents.
