  • Patent number: 8156390
Abstract: A pruned bit-reversal interleaver supports different packet sizes and variable code rates and provides good spreading and puncturing properties. To interleave data, a packet of input data of a first size is received. The packet is extended to a second size that is a power of two, e.g., by appending padding or properly generating write addresses. The extended packet is interleaved in accordance with a bit-reversal interleaver of the second size, which reorders the bits in the extended packet based on their indices. A packet of interleaved data is formed by pruning the output of the bit-reversal interleaver, e.g., by removing the padding or properly generating read addresses. The pruned bit-reversal interleaver may be used in combination with various types of FEC codes such as a Turbo code, a convolutional code, or a low density parity check (LDPC) code.

  • Patent number: 8149936
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and apparatus for synchronizing tile processing and assignment processing in a communication device. In particular, the methods and apparatus utilize a tile processing scorecard with a number of assertable bits corresponding to a number of tiles to be tile processed. As each tile is tile processed, the scorecard or bit indicators are asserted to indicate that the tile has been processed. Assignment jobs, which involve codewords having information from symbols in multiple tiles are processed after all of the pertinent tiles are tile processed. The scorecard information is accessible for assignment processing to determine which tiles have been processed, thus affording synchronization of tile processing with assignment processing, while maximizing the independence of these two processing operations. Tile processing operations may further use the scorecard information to prioritize or order tile processing in relation to known queued assignment jobs.

  • Patent number: 8150172
Abstract: A method and system for coding mode selection using estimated coding costs. To provide high compression efficiency, for example, an encoding device may attempt to select a coding mode for coding blocks of pixels that codes the data of the blocks with high efficiency. To this end, the encoding device may perform coding mode selection based on estimates of coding cost for at least a portion of the possible modes. The encoding device may estimate the coding cost for the different modes without actually coding the blocks. In fact, in some aspects, the encoding module device may estimate the coding cost for the modes without quantizing the data of the block for each mode. In this manner, the coding cost estimation techniques may reduce the amount of computationally intensive calculations needed to perform effective mode selection.

  • Patent number: 8139672
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate improved pilot information to MIMO user devices without increasing interference of SISO user devices in a wireless communication environment. A data communication signal can be generated and transmitted at a first power level, and a continuous pilot waveform comprising pilot information related to the data signal can be generated and sent at a second power level below the first transmission power level. Alternatively, a discontinuous pilot waveform can be generated so that it does not overlap with pilot segments in the first waveform, and can be transmitted at the first power level without interfering with the first waveform as received by a SISO user device. A MIMO user device can receive both waveforms, and can employ the pilot waveform to better estimate a MIMO channel for the first waveform.

  • Patent number: 8127105
Abstract: A parallel lookahead pruned bit-reversal interleaver algorithm and architecture have been proposed. The algorithm interleaves a packet of length N in at most log(N)?1 steps compared to N steps using existing sequential algorithms, and has a simple architecture amenable for high-speed applications. The proposed algorithm is valuable for emerging wireless standards especially those that employ PBRI channel (de-)interleavers on long packets in reducing interleaving latency on the transmitter side and deinterleaving latency on the receiver side.

  • Patent number: 8126482
Abstract: Systems and methods are described that mitigating coverage gaps near region boundaries using a plurality of multi-sector broadcast (MSBC) paging channels in wireless networking environments. One or more MSBC paging channels can be assigned unique time slots, such that although the channels can be identical, they are disjointed in time. Accordingly, such channels and/or dynamically generated paging zones associated therewith can be overlapped in areas where wireless device density is high and requires substantial paging capacity. Additionally, a single paging channel can be employed in multiple instances in a paging region without overlap to mitigate inter-channel interference.

  • Patent number: 8126447
Abstract: In a combined Bluetooth/alternate radio environment, an intermediate level software layer interprets operational conditions of a Bluetooth radio for an upper level, supervisory software layer. The intermediate level software layer also interfaces between the upper level software layer and a lower level software layer that interfaces to the alternate radio. The lower level software layer defines therein a criterion for reporting a condition of the alternate radio to the upper level software layer.

  • Patent number: 8102795
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate implementing a linear adaptive equalizer receiver on the downlink link of a UMTS TDD wireless communication system. A reference signal can be generated based on multiple non-common midamble sequences in a time slot of a received transmission. Traffic-to-pilot ratios for channel codes in the time slot can be generated, and relative strengths of channel codes associated with specific midambles can be determined to weight the midamble. A plurality of the weighted midambles can then be utilized to generate a reference signal to train the equalizer, which can facilitate utilization of total aggregate midamble energy rather than midamble energy associated with a single midamble in the signal.

  • Patent number: 8102832
Abstract: Techniques are provided to support fast frequency hopping with a code division multiplexed (CDM) pilot in a multi-carrier communication system (e.g., an OFDMA system). Each transmitter (e.g., each terminal) in the system transmits a wideband pilot on all subbands to allow a receiver (e.g., a base station) to estimate the entire channel response at the same time. The wideband pilot for each transmitter may be generated using direct sequence spread spectrum processing and based on a pseudo-random number (PN) code assigned to that transmitter. This allows the receiver to individually identify and recover multiple wideband pilots transmitted concurrently by multiple transmitters. For a time division multiplexed (TDM)/CDM pilot transmission scheme, each transmitter transmits the wideband pilot in bursts. For a continuous CDM pilot transmission scheme, each transmitter continuously transmits the wideband pilot, albeit at a low transmit power level.

  • Patent number: 8077595
Abstract: Techniques for efficiently sending data in a wireless communication system are described. Code division multiplexing (CDM) or orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) may be selected for each traffic segment, which may correspond to specific time frequency resources. An output waveform comprised of traffic and overhead segments may be generated. Each traffic segment may carry CDM data at a chip rate if CDM is selected or OFDM data if OFDM is selected. OFDM symbols may be generated at a sample rate that may be an integer ratio of the chip rate and may have a duration that may be determined based on the traffic segment duration. The output waveform may carry CDM data and/or OFDM data on subcarriers corresponding to at least one carrier in a spectral allocation and may further carry OFDM data on remaining usable subcarriers in the spectral allocation.
