  • Patent number: 6119188
Abstract: A method and associated arrangement for use in priority allocation in a bus interconnected digital multi-module system are disclosed. The modules are configured for requesting the use of the bus with each module being granted its request based upon its priority. During the operation of the system, a set of priorities is established such that the number of priorities is equal to the number of modules in the system. Each module is assigned to an initial priority. During the operation of the system, modules may be reassigned to a priorities which are different than their initial priorities. In addition, the priorities may be grouped in an initial group arrangement which may be reconfigured. The group arrangement may be reconfigured in any desired manner. Also, provisions are made for refusing a grant to a module even though that module possesses the highest priority among requesting modules.

  • Patent number: 6115170
Abstract: A light modulation system, wherein a light source provides light of a certain wavelength to be modulated by a material layer, which forms part of a specifically configured plate assembly. The modulation layer is placed in the optical path of the light source. Further, the modulation layer is switched between first and second states, and cooperates with the light source to produce a train of pulses at a given pulse rate. The resulting optical pulses transmitted through the modulation layer are converted from the original certain wavelength to a lower wavelength by a frequency converting device.

  • Patent number: 6095260
Abstract: Systems and associated methods for tracking and/or guiding an underground boring tool are disclosed. Each system or arrangement uses one or more detectors to measure the intensity of an electromagnetic field which is transmitted from an underground boring tool. The measured intensities may then be used to determine the location of the boring tool. In a dead reckoning embodiment of the invention, one detector may be employed while, in a position determination embodiment, two or more detectors may be employed. In any embodiment, physically measurable parameters may be used in addition to measured magnetic intensities. A highly advantageous mapping tool instrument and a cubic antenna are disclosed. The former for use in the position determination embodiment and the latter for use in any magnetic field detector employed herein.

  • Patent number: 6088753
Abstract: Bus arrangements for interconnecting a number of discrete and/or integrated modules in a digital system are described herein. Implementations of the bus arrangements are contemplated at chip level, forming part of an overall integrated circuit, and are also contemplated as interconnecting discrete modules within an overall processing system. These bus arrangements and associated method provide for high speed, efficient digital data transfer between the modules through optimizing bus utilization by eliminating the need for maintaining a fixed time relationship between the address and data portions of transactions which are executed by the system. In this manner, the bus arrangement is capable of supporting more active transactions than the number of individual buses which make up the bus arrangement. Systems described may include any number of individual buses within their bus arrangements.

  • Patent number: 6079506
Abstract: A locator/control arrangement forms part of a drilling apparatus which also includes a boring tool that emits a locating signal. The locator/control arrangement is used for locating and controlling underground movement of a boring tool which is operated from a drill rig. The locator/control arrangement includes a portable device for generating certain information about the position of the boring tool in response to the locating signal. In addition, the portable device generates command signals based on operator input in view of the generated certain information and transmits the command signals to the drill rig. An arrangement located at the drill rig then receives the command signals so that the command signals can be used to control the boring tool. In one feature, the arrangement located at the drill rig for receiving the command signals may indicate the command signals to a drill rig operator.

  • Patent number: 6075577
Abstract: A reflection mode, ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulating system, includes a light reflecting type spatial light modulator. The spatial light modulator has a light reflecting surface cooperating with a layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal light modulating medium switchable between first and second states so as to act on light in different first and second ways, respectively. A switching arrangement switches the liquid crystal light modulating medium between the first and second states and an illumination arrangement produces a source of light. An optics arrangement is optically coupled the spatial light modulator and the illumination arrangement such that light is directed from the source of light into the spatial light modulator for reflection back out of the modulator and such that reflected light is directed from the spatial light modulator into a predetermined viewing area.

  • Patent number: 6049427
Abstract: Optical devices are described. These devices incorporate a walk-off arrangement along the device length configured for simultaneously moving orthogonal polarization components of a first light signal in at least first and second orthogonal directions. The walk-off configuration includes a junction formed between confronting members which define the first and second orthogonal walk-off directions. The walk-off arrangement defines the first and second orthogonal directions such that the orthogonal polarization components of the first light signal are moved in directions which include a component of movement away from the junction. In this way, contact of the polarization components with the junction attributable to beam spreading is avoided. Moreover, the component of movement away from the junction may serve to compensate for beam spreading in other layers and/or for movement in other layers of the polarization components towards one or more junctions defined in the other layers.
