  • Patent number: 7352801
Abstract: Selecting one of multiple antennas to receive signals in a wireless packet network. Correlation value and gain needed to boost the signal up to a desired power (or the signal strength of the received signal) are determined for each antenna by examining the non-payload portion (e.g., preamble) of the packet. The antenna with the best SNR is then chosen based on the rule given. In an embodiment, the correlation value is determined based on the Barker Sequence employed for each bit in the preamble. The selection may be performed for each data packet, thereby using the antenna receiving the signal most conducive to recovery of the data bits (including payload) in each data packet.

  • Patent number: 7352818
Abstract: A method for detecting a boundary between two sequences in a wireless local area network is presented that permits rapid detection of the boundary. The method includes provisions for proper operation when significant interference and multi-path can degrade the received transmission significantly. Additionally, when a modification is made to the signaling format to signal a special enhanced mode with performance and features above those that are specified in a single technical standard, the method detects the boundary between sequences regardless of whether they have the standard format or the modified format.

  • Patent number: 7349433
Abstract: The creation, modification, and deletion of a traffic stream 224 with parameterized QoS expectations between two communicating stations 205 and 207, when there is no built-in mechanism for support of parameterized QoS expectations, requires signaling of traffic characteristics and QoS parameters between the management entities such as SME 212 and MLME 214 and between the MAC entities of the communicating stations 205 and 207. Either the station 205 and 207 or a hybrid coordinator may initiate the signaling. The end result of the signaling is the creation of a new traffic stream that is used to associate user traffic to a particular set of traffic characteristics and QoS parameters, which are then used in the scheduling of the transmission of the user traffic. Another end result of the signaling is the modification of an existing traffic stream in terms of its traffic characteristics and QoS parameters.

  • Patent number: 7349667
Abstract: A system and method facilitate estimating noise in a received signal. The received signal is formed of a plurality of tones, such as training tones and data tones. Noise is estimated at the training tones, which generally comprise a lesser number of the tones in the received signal than the data tones. The estimated noise at the training tones can be employed to facilitate demodulating and/or decoding data tones in the received signal. In one aspect, the estimated training tone noise can be utilized by a beamformer.

  • Patent number: 7346005
Abstract: In order to reduce distortion in playout of audio received in a packet over a packet network, the playout unit needs to determine the relative delay of adjacent packets, jitter, present in the network. The jitter is used to determine buffering for smoothing playout of audio in a packet network. The jitter in packets received from a packet network is calculated based upon the arrival time of a packet, the length of the packet and the arrival time of a subsequent packet. The receiving gateway notes the arrival time of a packet. The length of the audio payload is determined from the size of the payload and the codec used to encode the payload. The length of the payload is added to the arrival time to determine the anticipated arrival of the next subsequent packet. The actual arrival time is noted and the difference between anticipated arrival and actual arrival is used to determine jitter.

  • Patent number: 7339922
Abstract: A method of synchronizing timers in a wireless network is described. According to some embodiments, a master timer is sampled at the start time of a first beacon in a first data object and the sampled master timer value is broadcast in a second beacon of a second data object. A slave timer is sampled at the start of the second beacon in the second data object and a value representing the duration of the first data object is subtracted from the sampled slave timer value to determine an updated sampled slave timer value. According to some variations, a difference is determined between the sampled master timer value and the updated sampled slave timer value. The method then uses the difference to synchronize the slave timer to the master timer and to other slaver timers synchronized to the same master timer.

  • Patent number: 7339994
Abstract: A system and method for adjusting the power control target for a spread-spectrum communication system is disclosed. A preferred embodiment comprises correcting the power control target based upon the estimated slope of the SIR versus quality of service (QoS) curve under current operating conditions. By using the estimated slope of the current SIR versus QoS curve, the power control target converges to the desired value most quickly, and the SIR target overshoot or undershoot is maximally avoided, and the power rise is minimized, thereby reducing power requirements and signal dropouts. The invention finds application, for example, in personal communication devices such as cellular telephones and may be implemented using a digital signal processor (DSP).

  • Patent number: 7330140
Abstract: Interleaved analog to digital converter with compensation for parameter mismatch among individual converters. A reference ADC samples an input signal at substantially the same time instances as an individual converter used in the interleaved ADC. The reference values provided by the reference ADC are compared with the digital codes generated by the converter to generate an error value from which estimates of the gain, DC offset and timing errors are computed using statistical techniques. Timing error thus estimated is used to change the phase of the sampling clock provided to the converter, and the gain and DC offset errors estimated are applied to modify the values of reference voltages applied to the converter, thus compensating for parameter mismatches.
