  • Patent number: 6517719
Abstract: A storage tank includes an oil and water separator in which the frontal area of the coalescers is increased relative to known arrangements of coalescers in oil and water separators. By arranging the coalescers such that the surface area of the coalescers is increased, the efficiency of the coalescers is increased. In some preferred embodiments, the coalescers are arranged in a bank with free flow fluid paths between the coalescers in the bank, each of the paths being closed by a baffle on one end and open on an opposite end, and the baffles are arranged such that the open and closed ends of paths alternate. In other preferred embodiments, the coalescers are arranged in a tubular fashion and fluid flows from the outside surface of the tube through the coalescers and out a central path.

  • Patent number: 6514717
Abstract: A kit for detecting a first substance in a sample including a stabilized 1,2-dioxetane bearing an enzyme-labile substituent, which is destabilized and caused to decompose by contacting the 1,2-dioxetane with an enzyme under conditions which cause the enzyme to cleave the enzyme-labile substituent from the dioxetane, thereby yielding a negatively charged oxygen anion bonded to the 1,2-dioxetane, which causes the 1,2-dioxetane to decompose without input from an external excitation energy source, the decomposition being accompanied by chemiluminescence; and a second component selected from the group consisting of a specific affinity substance (e.g., an antigen, an antibody or a nucleic acid probe) and an enzyme which destabilizes said 1,2-dioxetane.

  • Patent number: 6503782
Abstract: A method and device produced for design, construction, and use of integrated circuits in wide bandgap semiconductors, including methods for fabrication of n-channel and p-channel junction field effect transistors on a single wafer or die, such that the produced devices may have pinchoff voltages of either positive or negative polarities. A first layer of either p-type or n-type is formed as a base. An alternating, channel layer of either n-type or p-type is then formed, followed by another layer of the same type as the first layer. Etching is used to provide contacts for the gates, source, and drain of the device. In one variation, pinchoff voltage is controlled via dopant level and thickness the channel region. In another variation, pinchoff voltage is controlled by variation of dopant level across the channel layer; and in another variation, pinchoff voltage is controlled by both thickness and variation of dopant level.

  • Patent number: 6483459
Abstract: Recently, a smart antenna, i.e., a blind adaptive antenna array, has attracted much attention to suppress multiple access interference (MAI) and multipath signals to improve the capacity of a code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless communications system. Most of the smart antenna algorithms either need matrix computation or complex calculations. In this invented direction-of-arrival (DOA) tracking algorithm only 2M complex multiplications are required per snapshot. Further more the DOA tracking algorithm is not sensitive to the mixer phase distortions. Hence the system complexity is reduced since a separate phase calibration is not required for the DOA tracking algorithm. Also the equivalent DOA tracking error due to the mixer phase distortions is derived. Simulation results show that the DOA tracking algorithm in the present invention works effectively under additive white Gaussian (AWGN) as well as Rayleigh fading environments.

  • Patent number: 6479287
Abstract: Protocols for organogenic regeneration of cotton are provided, which makes the in vitro regeneration of mature fertile plants in a reduced amount of time possible. Seedlings are the basis for monocotyl or hypocotyl explants which are transferred from the germination medium to a shoot initiation medium which comprises AgNO3. These explants, prior to shoot initiation, may be transformed with exogenous DNA, either through inoculation with an Agorbacterium agent such as A. tumefaciens, or through biolistic bombardment of the explants with microprojectiles having the exogenous DNA adsorbed onto their surface.

  • Patent number: 6467344
Abstract: A method for calculating underground storage tank (UST) buoyancy and buoyancy safety factors defines boundaries of side areas such that the boundaries do not overlap for multiple tank installations. Installation plan information may be input over a medium such as the Internet. The computer calculates the buoyancy and buoyancy safety factor and returns this information to the requesting party over the same medium. This technique allows installers to verify the adequacy of installation plans quickly. Records of the information provided by the installer may be kept so the recipient of the information (typically the UST manufacturer) can reconcile differences between the actual installation and the installation plan in the event of UST flotation. The information may be provided on a paper form supplied by the installer.

  • Patent number: 6465732
Abstract: A method and device for forming metal capacitor and integrated coaxial lines using energy transfer so as to form conductive links among conductors. Conductors are embedded within nonconductive layers, such that the conductors form a matrix of at least three levels. A source of energy is directed at the layers, such that at least one conductor is wholly shielded by at least one other conductor, and conductive paths form so that a conductor becomes shielded by the paths. Particular conductive path formation is encouraged by use of: differing surface areas of conductors; diffusion barriers to increase relative energy absorption; varied relative distances among conductors; some conductors having a lower melting point than other conductors; directing the energy to conductors in a particular order; or combinations thereof. In one variation, links among differing layers are formed using more than one energy source or sequentially generated and directed pulses of energy.

  • Patent number: 6459895
Abstract: A cellular architecture includes antenna arrays that are arranged to reduce soft handoff areas, thereby increasing system performance. The arrays are arranged such that each of the arrays are aligned along one of a plurality of parallel lines in a first direction at a regularly spaced interval, each of the arrays on a single line in the first direction having a same orientation, each of the arrays along adjacent parallel lines being staggered with respect to a nearest neighboring array in a second direction such that the second direction forms an angle of approximately 10.89 degrees with respect to a direction perpendicular to the first direction. In preferred embodiments, the orientation of arrays along adjacent parallel lines is rotated by sixty degrees with respect to each other. The architecture is particularly well-suited to CDMA systems. In preferred embodiments including smart antenna arrays, transmission to mobile users occurs along a primary multipath and two secondary multipaths.

  • Patent number: 6453254
Abstract: A method and system for monitoring a series of events performed in one or more applications on a computer. The recorded events enable users on the same or different machines to repeat the recorded events at a future time. • Patent number: 6451531
Abstract: Probes labeled with 1,2-dioxetane precursors can be employed in a variety of assays. The probes may be nucleic acid, peptide nucleic acid, proteins including enzyme, antibody or antigen, steroid, carbohydrate, drug or non-drug hapten. The probe is provided with a 1,2-dioxetane precursor bound thereto, generally either covalently, or a strong ligand bond. The dioxetane precursor moiety is converted to a bound 1,2-dioxetane by exposure to singlet oxygen. These dioxetane (labels) either spontaneously decompose, or are induced to decompose by an appropriate trigger to release light. The trigger may be a change in pH temperature, or an agent which removes a protective group. Assay formats in which these 1,2-dioxetane labeled probes and referents may be used to include hybridization assays, immuno assays, gel-based assays and Capillary Zone Electrophoresis.
