  • Patent number: 6653135
Abstract: An assay to determine the specific expression and suppression of proteins in response to a stressor is disclosed. An organism exposed to a stressor, including disease caused by exposure to, e.g., a parasite, or a substance suspected of causing an adverse effect, is assayed to determine a first set of proteins expressed and a second set of proteins suppressed in response to the stressor. The amount of each protein expressed and the amount of each protein suppressed can be statistically analyzed to determine which proteins are most useful in diagnosing the stressor. A protein profile for a first stressor can be compared to protein profiles for a second stressor, a third stressor, etc. A distinct protein expression signature (PES) for the first stressor can be identified by determining subsets fo proteins expressed and/or suppressed only in response to the first stressor.

  • Patent number: 6638856
Abstract: A method for depositing a metal layer on a substrate includes the steps of depositing a first metal layer at a first deposition temperature; depositing a second metal layer on the first metal layer at a second deposition temperature higher than the first deposition temperature; reducing at least one of a growth rate and a temperature of at least the second metal layer; and depositing a third metal layer on the second metal layer. Preferably, the growth rate is reduced substantially to zero and the temperature is reduced to a point below which the second metal layer ceases to flow. By interrupting the processing the metal layer prior to the third metal layer forming step by the reducing and/or cooling step, the formation of whiskers and other similar thermal stress-induced defects is suppressed or inhibited, resulting in a substantially smooth and substantially defect free metal layer.

  • Patent number: 6614977
Abstract: Devices and methods for the vapor deposition of amorphous, silicon-containing thin films using vapors comprised of deuterated species. Thin films grown on a substrate wafer by this method contain deuterium but little to no hydrogen. Optical devices comprised of optical waveguides formed using this method have significantly reduced optical absorption or loss in the near-infrared optical spectrum commonly used for optical communications, compared to the loss in waveguides formed in thin films grown using conventional vapor deposition techniques with hydrogen containing precursors. In one variation, the optical devices are formed on a silicon-oxide layer that is formed on a substrate, such as a silicon substrate. The optical devices of some variations are of the chemical species SiOxNy:D. Since the method of formation requires no annealing, the thin films can be grown on electronic and optical devices or portions thereof without damaging those devices.
